Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ty Rhiw
Never fire up your engine. If the fuel is still in that tank and the motor has not yet been started, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs — and that is determined in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they stand, across Ty Rhiw and the remainder of Rhondda Cynon Taf, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive. Just one ring our way will be enough: our engineers can explain what comes next. Do it first.
Petrol in a diesel: what to do now
- As you drive, your pump and the injectors wear. This is why you never fire it up, and why you don't depend on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the point most people get wrong — is that it pulls away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine generally will not run at all, which stops the driver and stops the damage with them. This one lets you keep going.
- Diesel burns, and before it combusts it protects — the injection pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the ignition off also: flicking it on is frequently sufficient to prime that system, and priming draws petrol from your tank into exactly those components.
- Topping up takes out nothing. It gives you a fuller tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system doesn't tolerate petrol by percentage the way that advice suggests — so never add diesel on top to water down it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
- Stay still if it's safe to. Hazards on, motor off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Ty Rhiw, anywhere — a tricky place for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to sort out than a vehicle that never shifted.
- Find out where you are before phoning. A postcode starting CF15 7, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of arriving.
- Three replies determine the entire job: the liquid you put in, the rough volume involved, plus whether it has been turning since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.
Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel
Plenty of the work begins at a forecourt, meaning a good portion of it ends up done at one. Our technicians work on station forecourts routinely, with the station's agreement, and so if you're still at Asda that is typically where this drain takes place.
At a garage, it is spotted with your motor never fired, and no place else manages that. Fuel sucked out of that tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the motor is fired up and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers your filter and the fuel lines together with your tank. That's still not a calamity, and our technicians sort it out where the vehicle sits. What decides it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was read.
Wheel it out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they generally will. The next driver gets by the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a start.
Places we cover near Ty Rhiw
Ty Rhiw is a residential suburb, and our team go out to the town and to the areas by it on the same runs: Taffs Well, Bryncoch, Glan-y-llyn, Gwaelod-y-garth and Tongwynlais.
There are pages for the majority of towns in Rhondda Cynon Taf, and the ones named above are simply the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off that list tells you nothing about if our engineers come. Presuming is the habit to skip, above all on a border or somewhere your satnav goes wrong. Contact us and enquire.
The patch this page spans appears on the map. Your car does not need to come to us. We work across every bit of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Roadside stops across Ty Rhiw
A chance to pull in anywhere sensible doesn't come to everybody. Set off, then realised? Finished up by the verge of Brynau Road, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That is a normal call here. Not an unusual one.
Out of the vehicle if it isn't sensible to sit there, with it when it is. Never start up your engine to nurse the vehicle somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mixture further into the fuel system. However tricky the place, it is no problem for us to get to it, and that's much better for the vehicle than driving on.
It will fire up. It will pull away just fine. That is the trouble, since a diesel on a weakened tank acts typically while wearing the components its fuel should be protecting. So no, don't try the journey home from Taffs Well Inn — leave the Mercedes E-Class then ring us.
Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off and ring us. Fine on the way out to Fforest Fawr, flat on the way back? Then look at the tank. Petrol dilutes diesel; thinner fuel seeps past the close-fitting components that build injection pressure; and the further your diesel BMW 5 Series travelled, the less of that pressure it held.
Leave the Ford Kuga close to War memorial then call us. We're direct about not driving on since a wearing pump gives off, and what it gives off moves on with your fuel to the fuel injectors downstream.
The smaller petrol nozzle fits a current diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical instead of slapdash. Unfamiliar spots see most of that for that reason. So: fuelled up near The Taff's Well without thinking, in a diesel Renault Captur you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anyone realises, and miles determines how much petrol reaches the fuel injectors.
What takes place next is the problem. The engine at once sucks the petrol left sitting in the filter and the feed lines back round through the pump a second time, since emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it then put clean diesel in, somebody certain will tell you — and that suggestion is half right, because do it to a diesel Seat Leon parked up, Gwaelod-Y-Garth Village Hall say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound reasonable. Phone us instead. Our engineers flush your system and take your filter off where your vehicle has a working one, and that is the difference between the car being repaired and the vehicle just starting.
Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles
under 3 miles out of Ty Rhiw, the M4 is what matters now. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a clean stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.
Pull off at the next safe junction, turn off, and do not start it to reposition. On a longer run — anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you call. It alters what our technicians bring.
Ty Rhiw itself
Ty Rhiw is a suburban area situated on the banks of the River Taff in Rhondda Cynon Taf, with a mix of semi-detached housing and local amenities. Ty Rhiw lies close to the nearby communities of Taffs Well and Bryncoch, and is connected to the city of Cardiff. Ty Rhiw has a relatively low elevation of 57 metres above sea level, reflecting its riverside setting. Ty Rhiw is home to a population of around 1869 people, living in a predominantly residential area.
The call-out in Ty Rhiw, step by step
- Our technicians find out what went in, how much, and if the motor has run. The replies change the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.
- Your tank gets emptied of it.
- We purge the lines and clean the fuel filter, and so what is remaining in the fuel system is not what created the issue.
- The system gets primed, on new diesel.
- We start it and confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.
The car is then ready for you to pull away. All of it is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been spotted quickly, lasting damage is very rare.
AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Ty Rhiw?
Don't start it: that first step holds whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this issue itself. The lubrication a fuel system depends on gets taken away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.
Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Ty Rhiw page. Both are ours to deal with.
What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Ty Rhiw
What shifts the figure is set out below, since the job is not one job and our engineers cannot truthfully put a single number on this page.
- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
- The sort of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
- Where your vehicle is, and if a van can sensibly reach and work on it.
A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is ideal for that.
Things our engineers get about petrol in diesel in Ty Rhiw
I'm on a forecourt around Ty Rhiw. Can you drain the vehicle here?
A fair portion of this work takes place there, so yes. Our technicians work at BP and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the site's permission — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Whether your engine has run counts much more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been pulled right through, or has it not?
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it
Switch off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. It's salvageable a lot more regularly than motorists expect, even though driving is what takes the problem from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
It isn't a modification, and so a drain then flush carried out properly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle switched off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a separate problem and it doesn't restore what petrol has thinned. Your pump still has to put up with it, since that tank still has petrol in it afterwards.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
Wherever the vehicle is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.
Still with your vehicle?
Do not switch it back on.
Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, and let it stay that way. This is recoverable from a lot more frequently than people assume, and a stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in.
