Petrol in Diesel

The Next Steps, in Order: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Tye Green

Stop, then keep your engine off — not on, and not for a moment to shift the car. Drained and rinsed, just where it is: that is normally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it needs. Whether it stays that simple depends on the minutes ahead more than on anything else. What follows is the sequence from this point, wherever in Tye Green you happen to be.

Motor off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

Go through the following in sequence, before you do anything else.

  • The ignition off, keys out. Switched on, your ignition can prime the system — and priming is what moves petrol out of your tank towards the parts it damages.
  • Don't top it up with diesel. Adding diesel removes nothing. You are left with a bigger tank of the same mix.
  • Make the car simple to see before anything else — hazard lights on — if there is traffic going past anywhere close to you.
  • Off the pump by hand. At a forecourt, ask the attendants to help you roll the car clear of the pump. Do not fire it up to shift it, however short the distance.
  • Hold on to the till receipt. It says which fuel went in and about how much, which is the first thing we will ask.

On the M11, under 25 miles from Tye Green, the next junction is the location to leave the car; anywhere, the first safe spot to stop. Do not press on to the services. Then go back to step one.

Every Tye Green fuel drain starts here: has your engine run?

Everything after this stage rests on one answer.

If it has never been started:

  • That petrol is still inside your tank and nowhere else.
  • Draining and flushing, on the spot, is usually the whole job.
  • Being here is the best case — which is the entire point of step one.

Run at all, even for a second:

  • Petrol has been pulled out of that tank, through the fuel filter then into the lines.
  • Your high-pressure pump as well as the injectors see it too on a longer run.
  • Distance is what turns it into a larger job: the lines flushed, a filter seen to, and at times further work.

Petrol doesn't lubricate. Diesel does, oiling your high-pressure pump and injectors as it passes through, which is why the line sits where it does. In the tank, sitting still, petrol harms nothing. The components that move it are wearing the moment petrol is being pumped.

Calling about petrol in a diesel from Tye Green: what to have prepared

Get ready a little, and the van finds you instead of circling.

  • The ideal place to start is a postcode — one beginning CM77 8 — for where you are.
  • Wherever you have parked, the road's name helps — whether that is Braintree Road or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.
  • Name a car park by what it serves — the one at M&S Simply Food, for example — and it's far quicker to find.
  • The vehicle. Make, model, and that it's a diesel.
  • Petrol or AdBlue? Tell us which. They are separate jobs, and AdBlue has a separate Tye Green page.
  • How long the nozzle was in, or the litres on your receipt — whichever tells us how much.
  • Has it run? If so, say how far it got, and how it was driven.
  • The owner may have to approve the work under some hire or company contracts — so it is quicker to settle whose motor it is before our engineers get there.

Ring 0333 366 0103 next. Email works too if it can wait, with the car parked at home, going nowhere.

Whilst you wait for a fuel drain around Tye Green

Help, however well meant, is the thing that does the damage whilst you wait. So hold to these.

  • Stay with your car if it is safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere dangerous, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.
  • No one starts it. Not a passer-by being helpful, not to check it is all right, not to roll the vehicle a few yards.
  • Additives remain in your boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil draw none of the petrol out once more.
  • Emptying it yourself is out: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and the fuel beyond your tank stays put all the same.
  • Keep your ignition off — the windows and your radio included.

Van arrived? Your fuel drain, one stage at a time

  • Our price comes after three queries, not before them — what went in, how much, and whether it's run — because those answers shape this job.
  • Out of your tank comes the tainted mixture: the tank is drained.
  • Cleaning your lines follows, since a vehicle that ran has petrol past your tank, inside your lines themselves.
  • Cleaned, or changed if the vehicle has a workable one: the filter is dealt with next.
  • Your system is primed on clean diesel.
  • The start-up. With clean diesel in and your system primed, it's fired up and checked to be sure it runs properly.

The vehicle has fresh diesel running through it before we go. It's very uncommon for a vehicle caught early to be left with lasting damage, and normal driving resumes at once.

Tye Green, after your fuel drain: back on the road

  • Once it's been started on fresh fuel, there is nothing unusual to do: drive normally.
  • The first miles are the test. A dash warning, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a flat throttle is your cue to stop and call us again.
  • An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire firm may ask what was done, and so keep the paperwork.
  • Next time, check the petrol pump. The label, not the colour of its handle.
