Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Tywyn? Don't Start It

Don't start your engine. If the fuel is still inside that tank and the motor has not turned over, a drain is nearly always all it needs — and that's settled in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they stand, all over Tywyn and the remainder of Conwy, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. Ring us and our team will explain what happens after that before you do anything else.

The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Do not fire it up — and do not trust it if it does start. That is the bit most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine given diesel usually just won't run, so the driver stops and the harm ends with them. A diesel filled with petrol typically starts, idles and moves off quite happily for a few miles. It's not fine. It is grinding that fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the injection pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only does the one. That is why the car's ignition remains off also — turn it on and you usually prime the system, and that is petrol exiting your tank for precisely those parts.
  • Do not put diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage as that advice assumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it merely hands you a fuller tank of the same mix. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A car that has never moved is the quickest one to deal with, and we'd sooner come to an odd location than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Warren Drive, put those hazards on and leave the car there.
  • Know where you are before calling. A postcode that starts LL31 9, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than turning up.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three things — what was put in, roughly how many litres, plus if the car has been turned over. Your answers decide all that happens next.

Call us before you fetch the vehicle. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Golf this morning, and the car at Deganwy ever since? Then the afternoon has taken nothing from you: fuel in a tank is idle, and any damage was done on the journey in, when the pump was pulling diesel that petrol had weakened.

The awkward part is that bay, not the fuel. Motors either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and from time to time a height barrier on the way in that decides whether our van can get to you at all — so when you phone from a car park like the one outside Co-op Food, mention how much clearance there is round you and which way round the car is. Those our engineers attend often. Should there be no space to work alongside your diesel Audi A4, it gets moved with your engine off, and not out of pedantry over a handful of seconds of running: priming occurs at every start, more of the mix exits that tank for your pump, and two shunts into a roomier space have gradually made a worse job of what was just a vehicle sitting still.

Here is the whole process. Diesel needs enough body to seal the tight tolerances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That is it. Which explains the ordinary Coedwig Bodlondeb call — a diesel Citroen C3, out there without a murmur and back down on power, lumpy at idle, perhaps a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so the fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; diluted, it bleeds past those gaps instead of building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than the engine was designed around. Not a failing engine, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

Our technicians flush your lines instead of only emptying the tank, and the reason is that diluted fuel has already got to the filter and your pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The drive really helps — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Kia Sportage parked up near Peniel Elgwys Presbyteriadd Cymru a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Call us then leave it off.

The fuel filter, the lines, the pump and the rail: that's where that blend is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with the tank contents. So your tank isn't where most of the problem rests by this point, and a diesel Seat Leon that got by Most Holy Family Church needs your system purged instead of drained.

Clearing petrol from your diesel at a forecourt

It starts at the pump, generally. Quite often the job ends there too. If you are still at the forecourt at Tesco, that is normally where the drain takes place — we operate on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the station's consent.

At the forecourt, it gets halted with your engine never fired, and nowhere else does it. Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from the tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a calamity, and our technicians can still put it right where it sits. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as that tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the key.

The staff will usually offer to wheel the car clear of the pump so the next driver can get past. That's worth doing. Shifting the car four lengths doesn't warrant firing the motor.

Service around Tywyn

Being a residential suburb, Tywyn gets a regular call, and the areas nearby go with it on the same run: Conwy and Llandudno Junction, Cadnant Park and Llanrhos, Deganwy.

Our engineers do come. Those names above are merely the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all places in Conwy, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Call us to enquire rather than assuming, especially if you are on the border or anywhere your satnav can't find.

The area this page includes is on this map. Our technicians work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of it, and your car never needs to come to us.

Tywyn: broken down wherever you stopped

The opportunity to pull in anywhere sensible does not come to everyone. Set off, then noticed? Finished up on the verge on Pentywyn Road, or sat in some lay-by with your hazards going? That is a common call here. Not an odd one.

Remain by your car if it's wise to wait inside, and out of the vehicle if it isn't. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that mixture further into the fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer. Driving on does the vehicle far more harm than a technician coming out to an inconvenient place, and that's no bother for us.

Petrol in a diesel, and the car has moved

Here is where your Moreton Spur comes into it — under 50 miles from Tywyn. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power drains away, the idle goes lumpy, and there may be smoke.

Get off at the next safe exit, turn off, and never start the vehicle to move it. It affects what our engineers bring, and so tell us when you phone: on a longer trip — anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors.

All about Tywyn

Tywyn is a coastal suburban area in Conwy, Wales, situated at a low elevation of around 8 metres above sea level. Tywyn lies near the cities of Bangor and Conwy, and the nearby Llandudno Junction and Cadnant Park. Tywyn has a population of approximately 2832 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Tywyn is located about 198.5 miles from London, on the north Wales coast.

What comes next when our technicians get to you in Tywyn

  • Our engineers ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has the motor run? Those responses alter what the work actually is.
  • The tank is drained of everything.
  • Our engineers rinse your fuel lines and clear the filter, so what is remaining in the system isn't what created the problem.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once new diesel is in.
  • It is run with new diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it's running correctly.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away. Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been caught soon, and as all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never has to be taken to a garage.

AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Tywyn?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — your engine remains off — while the issue under it is a different one altogether. Petrol thins the diesel and takes away the protection the system depends on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and deposits in its place.

We handle both, and AdBlue removal around Tywyn has its own page with the detail — including why it is usually the more significant of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Tywyn?

One price wouldn't be fair here, as this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, set against how much the tank takes.
  • Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can our van get to it and work there safely?

Tell us the car, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a firm answer instead of a range. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and is not time-critical, works too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Tywyn drivers

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Tywyn?

A good share of this work happens there, so yes. Routinely, provided the site consents: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that spot is something we answer straight away.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is if that mixture has been drawn through your fuel system.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving shifts the issue along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no modification at all. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a separate issue from a different era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind replaces. Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

Wherever the vehicle is, we drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Switched off is how the car stays.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, turn off, then let the car stay that way. This is recoverable from a lot more often than motorists fear, and a still, cold car is the best place to be in.
