Petrol in a Diesel Car in Uffculme: What Happens Now

Whatever you do, don't switch your motor on, even briefly, to move the vehicle. Stop; leave the vehicle off. Drained and rinsed, just where it is: that is generally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it needs. Whether it remains that simple rests on the minutes to come more than on everything else. From now on, step by step, for anywhere in Uffculme:

Petrol in a diesel? What to do in minute one

Go through the following in sequence, before you do anything else.

  • Take the keys out. Even the ignition by itself can prime the fuel system, drawing petrol out of the tank to precisely the parts it harms, so leave it alone wholly.
  • Don't top it up with diesel. Adding diesel takes out nothing. You are left with a fuller tank of the same mix.
  • Near moving traffic? Then the hazards go on before everything else, and so the car is easy to spot.
  • The attendants will usually help you roll it clear of the pump. Let them, and roll it by hand — never under your engine, even for a few yards.
  • Hold on to the till receipt. It shows which fuel got in plus about how much, which is the first thing we'll ask.

If you were still driving when you noticed, stop somewhere sensible rather than pushing on for the services — on the M5, under 3 miles from Uffculme, that means the next junction. Step one follows.

The fork in each Uffculme fuel drain: has it run yet?

From this stage on, everything comes down to a single answer.

Motor never run at all?

  • That petrol is still inside the tank and nowhere else.
  • The job is a drain and a flush, normally done where the car is.
  • No place is better, and it's why the first step counts so much.

Run at all, however briefly:

  • Some petrol has left the tank by now, gone through the fuel filter, and reached your lines.
  • Run it further and the petrol reaches the fuel injectors, having passed through the pump first.
  • Mileage is what turns it into a larger job: the lines flushed, a filter seen to, and at times more than that.

That line falls there since diesel protects the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors on its way through them — and petrol doesn't. A tank of petrol, left alone, hurts nothing. Pump the petrol, though, and it grinds down the very parts doing the moving.

Uffculme, petrol in a diesel: have these prepared before you call

A little preparation is the difference between a van that finds you and a van that circles.

  • Where you have stopped. A postcode beginning EX15 3 is the best place to start.
  • The street or the car park. A road name helps — High Street, or wherever you have stopped.
  • What a car park serves is the quickest way to find it, so say the landmark — like the one outside Co-op Food.
  • Say what your vehicle is — make, model — and confirm it is diesel.
  • Which went in counts: AdBlue is a separate job from petrol, plus Uffculme has a page for it. So tell us.
  • About how much — in litres from the receipt, or by how long the nozzle stayed in.
  • If it's run, how far and how hard — and whether it's run at all.
  • Whose car it is. Some hire or company contracts want the owner to approve this work, and that's easier settled before our technicians turn up than after.

Then call 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the vehicle is at home with going nowhere — works too.

The wait for a Uffculme fuel drain, and what to do in it

Help, however well meant, is what does the damage whilst you wait. So stick to these.

  • Wait with the car if it is safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere dangerous, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.
  • Not to roll it a few yards, not to check it is all right, not for a passer-by's favour: no one starts it.
  • No additives. Two-stroke oil, injector cleaner, something from your boot — none of it takes the petrol back out.
  • No home-made emptying. Siphoning petrol into a can at the kerbside is dangerous, and it leaves the fuel that has by now gone beyond that tank.
  • Leave the ignition off — your windows and your radio too.

Van arrived? The fuel drain, one step at a time

  • Fuel, volume, whether it has run: those replies set this job, and that is why we give a quote after them instead of before.
  • The tank is cleared. The polluted blend comes from the tank.
  • The fuel lines are rinsed. If it ran, the petrol has moved beyond your tank, and the lines are carrying it.
  • Cleared, or swapped if the car has a workable one: your filter is seen to next.
  • The system is primed on fresh diesel.
  • The start-up. With new diesel in and the fuel system primed, it is fired up and checked to make sure it runs correctly.

The car has fresh diesel running through it before our technicians go. The vehicle returns to normal driving at once, and lasting damage is very unusual if it has been noticed early.

After your fuel drain: back on the road around Uffculme

  • Started on fresh diesel, it asks nothing special of you. Just drive normally.
  • The first miles are the test. A dash warning, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a hesitant throttle is your cue to stop and ring us once more.
  • An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire company may ask what was carried out, and so hold on to your paperwork.
  • The handle's colour is not the thing to go by next time — the label on the petrol pump is.
