Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Underwood?

With the tank still carrying the fuel and the engine not yet turned over, nearly every job needs only a drain, so keep your engine off. That result is settled in the minutes straight after the fill-up, and not by the amount that went in. All over Underwood and the remainder of Newport, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Phone and our technicians shall explain what happens after that before you try any more.

The next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Never fire it up — and never trust it when it runs. This is the part people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor given diesel typically just won't run, and so the motorist stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel fed petrol typically starts, ticks over and moves off just fine for a couple of miles. It isn't fine. It's wearing out the fuel system as you drive.
  • Turning the car's ignition on often primes your system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of that tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the ignition be.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It leaves you a bigger tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage in the way that guidance suggests — so don't add diesel on top to thin it. Type is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A motor that hasn't moved is the quickest one to handle, and we'd sooner drive to an awkward place than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on The Cedars, switch your hazards on then leave the car there.
  • Have your whereabouts ready before you ring. A postcode starting NP18 2 and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it is the difference between a van turning up and a van circling.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what was put in, about how many litres, and if your car has been run. The answers shape all that comes after.

Nothing about the hours since has lost you anything. Fuel in a tank is inert, so a diesel Volkswagen Passat sitting outside Newport (South Wales) this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what sucked diluted diesel through the pump was the trip in. Ring us before you set off to fetch the car.

How far, and how hard? The second of those matters more than the first, and so have both ready. The Nissan Qashqai will have seemed entirely normal on the way back from the local primary school — they all do, and that is the snag. Diesel into a petrol vehicle mostly won't run at all: the driver stops, and so does the damage. Petrol into a diesel starts, ticks over, moves off like nothing happened, whilst the high-pressure fuel pump gets on with its work minus the protection the fuel should be giving it. No warning arrives, as behind the wheel nothing looks wrong.

What we will want to know is if that run there was short and cold, since that is where petrol is slowest to burn correctly — and what doesn't burn can work past the rings then into the sump. Right up to the moment somebody takes it home, a diesel Dacia Duster parked in the car park at The Old Barn carrying a tank of petrol in it is a simple job. Nothing deteriorates while it waits, and so park it overnight then phone us first thing.

Ringing from near Langstone Village Hall? Three things help us. The filler — which side of your car it is on. Room for a technician alongside you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The spot itself hardly matters: on-street is where our technicians work most, and we'd much rather have a narrow spot than a motor a person has driven somewhere easier. Then it's a drain for the Audi A3, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines rinsed, clean fuel put round the entire circuit. By now the worst of that is in the lines and not that tank.

Switch off where you have stopped, and never restart it to find somewhere better — near St Cadwaladr's Church or anywhere at all. Knocking, an uneven idle, white smoke and a soft throttle are a misfilled diesel Vauxhall Astra telling you what is wrong.

Can petrol be taken from your diesel on the forecourt?

Forecourts are where the job usually kicks off, and where a good portion of that ends. Still at Esso? Then that is normally where it gets done. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the owner.

Before your motor has fired — the forecourt is the single place it is caught. Fuel drawn out of the tank and through your filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the engine is started and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and the lines along with the tank. That is still not a calamity, and our engineers sort it out where your car stands. What decides it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was read.

The staff will usually help you move it out from the petrol pump so the next driver can get by. It is worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth a restart.

Areas our team cover near Underwood

Llanmartin, Langstone, Bishton, Cats Ash, Llanwern — all of these on the runs that take us over to Underwood as well, a village.

Not on this list? That says nothing. The names above are just the closest few, and the majority of locations around Newport have a page of their own somewhere on the site. Contact us and ask instead of assuming, especially where you are on the boundary or anywhere the satnav can't find.

That map is the area the page covers. We work at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of it, and the car does not need to move to us.

Underwood: broken down wherever you pulled up

Not everyone gets a safe place to pull over. A common call for us and not a rare one: noticed after setting off, finished up by the verge on Hazel Road or at a lay-by with the hazards going.

Whether you stay beside your car or stand away from it turns on whether being nearby looks safe. Don't fire it up to reach a better location. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the blend deeper into the system. A technician driving to an awkward spot is no problem for us, and it's a lot better for your car than carrying on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

The M4 is the one which counts here, and it runs under a mile from Underwood. A misfilled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, while the symptoms when they come are typically lost power, a lumpy idle and some smoke instead of a clean stop.

Don't start it to reposition. Get off at the first sensible exit and switch off. On a longer run — anything near the under 5 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through your filter, your pump and the injectors, and tell us when you ring. It affects what we bring.

About Underwood

Underwood is a village in Newport, situated on the riverside at a low elevation of around 24 metres. Underwood lies close to the city of Newport, approximately 4.7 miles away, and is near other local places such as Llanmartin, Langstone, and Bishton. Underwood has a population of around 2134 people and is characterised by predominantly terraced housing.

When our technicians arrive with you around Underwood: what follows

  • The responses alter the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of that, and whether your motor has run.
  • Out flows the tainted fuel.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.
  • We start the car and check it runs smoothly on new diesel.

That leaves it ready to drive away. Our engineers do all of it wherever your car has come to a stop, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and if it has been caught quickly, it's very rare for there to be lasting damage.

A distinct matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Underwood

Don't start it: that opening instruction stands whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the fault itself. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that depends on it. That's petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

AdBlue removal in Underwood has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's frequently the more serious of the two. Our technicians handle both.

Underwood costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What moves the figure is set out below, since the job isn't one job and our engineers cannot frankly put a single number on this page.

  • This is the main one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for a technician.

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and whether it has run. If it is not urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Underwood drivers

I'm on a forecourt around Underwood. Can you drain the car here?

Plenty of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the station's consent we visit BP and the other forecourts locally routinely.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and far more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mix pulled through it.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Driving moves the problem along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you is not restarting the car.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no alteration at all. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a different problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Your pump still has to put up with it, as that tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, because we drain and clean your car wherever it is.

Standing next to it?

Keep the car shut off.

Turn it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it. A stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more regularly than drivers assume.
