Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in University? Don't Start It
Do not fire up the motor. If the petrol is still sitting in that tank and the engine has not yet run, a tank drain is almost always all it requires — and that gets decided in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they stand, all over University and the rest of Greater Manchester, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. We can show you what the next move is. Contact us — it happens before all else.
What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step
- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will usually not run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it moves off — all right for a couple of miles. People have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't fire it up. And having started, never depend on it: that fuel system is wearing down as you drive.
- Two tasks, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors greased. Petrol only manages the one. That is why your ignition is left off as well — flick it on and you frequently prime that system, and that is petrol leaving the tank for exactly those parts.
- Topping up removes nothing. It gives you a fuller tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system doesn't cope with petrol by percentage as that guidance suggests — so don't put diesel on top to water down it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
- Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to handle, and we'd much rather travel to an odd place than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Oxford Road, turn the hazards on then keep the vehicle there.
- Have your location prepared before you dial. A postcode beginning M13 9 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between a van showing up and the van circling.
- Call 0333 366 0103. Expect three questions — what was put in, roughly how many litres, and whether the car has been started. The replies settle whatever comes after.
Don't run it home. The commute has already pushed a real volume of petrol-thinned diesel through your high-pressure pump of that Renault Megane, and the trip back would about double it for no purpose at all. Ring us from the platform if that is quicker. We do not need you hovering over the vehicle at Manchester Oxford Road while our engineers get it done, and we would far rather talk to you tonight than realise on Monday.
Tell us this much and our technicians can work with it: a diesel BMW 3 Series, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, shut off at Co-op Food now. Time passed isn't the thing our technicians need. Fuel pulled by your pump is.
You'll be urged to shift the car out of the gateway and sort it out later. Don't. On the zig-zags at St Philip's Church of England Primary School, a wrongly fuelled Nissan Qashqai running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Start it three more times being helpful and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the lines, every prime pulls more petrol through the filter toward the pump. Let them complain. Phone.
Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off then call us. Fine on the way out to University Green, sluggish on the way back? Then look at that tank. Petrol thins diesel; weaker fuel seeps past the close-fitting parts that build injection pressure; and the further your diesel Ford Focus went, the less of that pressure it held.
Rattling? Lumpy idle? White smoke, throttle gone limp? That is your misfuelled Mercedes E-Class, a diesel, saying what is wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, possibly close to Manchester Aquatics Centre, and leave the restarting alone.
Clearing petrol from your diesel on a forecourt
Much of this work starts at a pump, meaning a fair portion of it gets done there. Still at Esso? Then that's typically where it takes place. Petrol station forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the site.
Before your engine has started — the forecourt is the single place this is spotted. The few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for the keys settle how much requires flushing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and your filter require flushing as well as that tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still deal with it where the vehicle sits.
The attendants will usually happily wheel it out from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get past. That's worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth a restart.
Areas our vans reach in University
University is a residential suburb, so we are out to the town and to the areas by it on the usual rounds: Brunswick, Hulme, Infirmary, Ardwick and Moss Side.
If yours is not on that list that does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of towns across Greater Manchester, and the ones named above are merely the immediate neighbours. Contact us to enquire rather than guessing, particularly where you are on the boundary or somewhere a satnav gets wrong.
Look at the map for the patch shown here. The lot is ground we serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You never move your car anywhere.
Stuck by the kerbside somewhere in University?
Some people have no safe spot to stop whatsoever. Set off, then noticed? Finished up on the verge beside Booth Street East, or sat in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That's a common call here. Not an unusual one.
Clear of the motor when it isn't sensible to wait there, with it if it is. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the catch: start it up to reach somewhere better and that blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile travelled. We'll send our van to a tricky spot without any bother, and for the car that is much better than driving on.
Petrol in a diesel, and the car has gone
The local A57(M) is the road which counts now, and it runs under a mile from University. A misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they come are typically a drop in power, a lumpy idle and smoke instead of a neat stop.
The first sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. It changes what our technicians bring, so say so when you ring: on a longer trip — anything approaching the under a mile to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors.
About University
University is a suburban area in Greater Manchester, situated on the riverside near the city of Manchester. University sits at an elevation of 47 metres, with a mix of residential and urban landscapes, and is characterized by a high proportion of flat dwellings. University is located close to nearby places such as Brunswick, Hulme, and Infirmary, and is home to a population of approximately 10,578 people. University is also relatively close to the regional hub, with London being around 162 miles away.
The visit in University, step by step
- The answers alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what got in, how much of that, and whether your motor has run.
- Away goes the tainted mixture.
- Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever is left later on isn't the thing that created the trouble.
- Your system gets bled, on clean diesel.
- Your engine is turned on and checked to confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.
The car is then ready for you to pull away. Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted quickly, and since all of this is done where the vehicle is, it never has to go to a garage.
University AdBlue removal is a distinct job
AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — the motor stays off — whereas the fault under it's a different one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the lubrication the system relies on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and deposits in its place.
Both are ours. There's a separate University page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in University?
What shifts the figure is laid out below, because this job isn't one job and our technicians can't honestly put a single number on this page.
- Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the key one.
- How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much your tank takes.
- The sort of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there safely?
A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and whether it has run. For the car at home that's going nowhere and isn't time-critical, is fine too.
Petrol in diesel: frequent queries around University
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around University?
A large part of this work happens there, so yes. Our technicians attend Asda and the other forecourts nearby regularly, with the owner's consent — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you if we can work there.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
It rests on the proportion rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether the motor has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been pulled right through, or has it not?
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car
Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving takes the trouble along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely helpful thing left to you isn't restarting the car.
Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties
A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a modification and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle switched off.
Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?
No. It belongs to a separate fault from a bygone era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces. Your tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to put up with it.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
No. Our engineers drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.
Waiting next to it?
Never turn the engine back on.
Switch it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from much more often than motorists expect, and a still, cold motor is the best position to be in.
Throughout Greater Manchester and in University: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
