Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in University?

If you have not started your engine as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a motor requires while the petrol is still inside that tank and the engine has not yet run, which is why it's the following few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel comes to your car wherever it has stopped in University or the remainder of North Yorkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there. Phone and we shall tell you what comes from here before you try much else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will generally fail to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine enough for several miles. Most people have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not fire it up. And once started, never depend on it: the fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it ignites it greases — the high-pressure pump, those injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the ignition be also: turning it on is commonly sufficient to prime the system, and priming pulls petrol from your tank into exactly those components.
  • Topping up takes out nothing. It gives you a bigger tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage as that guidance assumes — so never add diesel on top to weaken it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay still if it is safe to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on University Road, anywhere — an awkward place for us beats a started motor, and nothing is easier for us to sort than a vehicle that never moved.
  • Our van showing up rather than circling depends on two things: a postcode that starts YO10 5, and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it. Have both ready before you ring.
  • Three replies determine the full call-out: the fuel you tipped in, the rough volume of it, plus if anything has been turning since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Removing petrol from a diesel at a forecourt

Forecourts are where this job mostly starts, and where a good portion of that ends. We operate on garage forecourts all the time, with the site's consent, so if you're still at Shell that's generally where the drain happens.

A filling station is the single setting it gets halted before your motor has run. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That is not a calamity, and our technicians can still deal with it where it is. It does mean the fuel lines and your filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for your key.

Clear of the petrol pump, the next motorist can get past — so yes, let the staff help you move it. Well worth it. Moving the car four bays doesn't merit firing the motor.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in University

Any start primes the fuel system and pulls more of the mix out of the tank and toward your pump — which is why a car shuffled twice into a roomier bay has silently become a worse job than one left precisely where it stopped. So where our engineers cannot work alongside the diesel Renault Megane, we shift it without starting it. None of that is pedantry about a handful of seconds of running. Car parks like the one at The Co-operative Food our engineers attend often, and your fuel is seldom the difficult part: that bay is. Motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, sometimes a height limit at the entrance determining if a van can reach you at all. Tell us how boxed in you are, and which way the vehicle points.

A diesel pump delivers fuel on demand, and a rushed morning dash asks for plenty — so three miles in the BMW 3 Series sounds like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine by Lord Deramore's Primary School, already late, a receipt in your hand showing unleaded: hazards on, engine off, ring us.

Simple job, this one — until someone drives it home. A diesel Nissan Qashqai parked at The Courtyard with petrol in the tank loses nothing by standing there overnight, and so leave it then phone once it is light. Expect a query about that trip there, though. Short and chilly is precisely where petrol battles to burn, and what won't burn can slip past the piston rings and into the oil.

Leave the Ford Kuga near Long Boi and ring us. We're blunt about not driving on because a wearing pump loses, and what it gives off moves onward with your fuel to the injectors further along.

Rattling? Uneven idle? White smoke, throttle gone soft? That is your misfilled Peugeot 2008, a diesel, saying what is wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, perhaps close to Norman Rea Art Gallery, then leave the restarting alone.

Can our technicians cover your end of University?

University is a residential suburb, and so our technicians go out to it and to anywhere by it on the usual journeys: Heslington, Walmgate Stray, Tang Hall, Osbaldwick and Foss Islands.

Our technicians still come. Those places above are merely the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all locations across North Yorkshire, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. Call us to check instead of assuming, especially where you're on the border or anywhere your satnav misreads.

The ground this page includes sits on this map. Every bit of that is ground we serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never move your car anywhere.

Kerbside stops in University

Not everybody gets a decent spot to stop. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Innovation Way since you realised after setting off — our technicians take that call so often that it is the normal kind.

Whether you stay by the car or keep away from it depends on whether staying there seems wise. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the problem: restart the vehicle to reach somewhere better and that mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered. We will bring the van to an awkward location without any bother, and for the car that is much better than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has rolled

Your A1(M) is the one which counts here, and it lies under 15 miles from University. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is some smoke, an uneven idle and power falling away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Never start it to reposition. Come off at the next safe exit then switch off. Long run? Anything near the under 3 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the contamination. Say that on the call, because it affects what goes in the van.

About University

University is a suburban area located on the outskirts of York in North Yorkshire, situated near the lakeside at an elevation of 18 metres. University sits in close proximity to nearby places such as Heslington and Tang Hall, with Walmgate Stray also in the surrounding area. University is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock and is home to approximately 5276 residents.

What we do when our engineers get to you around University

  • Three things get established before any price — the fuel that was put in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • The tank is drained completely.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later on is not the thing that caused the problem.
  • Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • Your engine is started and checked to confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

Then it is ready to drive away. There is no need to go to a garage at any point, as the work is all done where the car is, and when it is caught soon, long-term damage is very unusual.

A separate job: AdBlue in a diesel tank in University

Don't crank it: that first instruction holds whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this problem itself. The protection a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Our engineers deal with both, and AdBlue removal in University has its own page with the full story — including why it is usually the more serious of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in University

Our engineers cannot put one number on this page truthfully, because the job is not one job. What shifts it:

  • This is the big one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, measured against how much that tank can hold.
  • Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether our van can sensibly get to your vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where your car is.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear instead of as a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is ideal for that.

Petrol in diesel: common queries in University

I'm on a forecourt around University. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

Plenty of what our engineers do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the site's agreement our technicians attend BP and the other forecourts around town routinely.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your engine has run matters much more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. What determines how much work is required is if that mix has been sucked through your fuel system — because although five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What now?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of the tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable a lot more frequently than people fear.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no modification at all. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. The tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to put up with it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

You, and the car, still together?

Your engine remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later on. Cold and stationary, a car is in the best place available — and motorists fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
