Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Upper Bradway

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, across Upper Bradway and the rest of South Yorkshire. The first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. While the engine has not yet been started and the petrol is still sitting in the tank, a drain is nearly always all it takes, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much got in. Ring us before everything else begins, and you'll hear what happens next.

Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't crank it. Fired up regardless? Then don't depend on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle usually can't run, and so the motorist stops and the wear halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away normally, for a few miles. Motorists get that backwards. It isn't fine — the fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only does the one. That is why your ignition is left off too — turn it on and you often prime that system, and that's petrol exiting that tank for just those parts.
  • That advice presumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It won't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you get is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that has not moved is the easiest one to sort, and we would sooner travel to a tricky place than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Bradway Road, put the hazards on then leave it there.
  • Before you ring, get your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode beginning S17 4 — that is what settles whether our van turns up or circles.
  • What was put in, approximately how much, and also if your car has run — the three replies decide the entire visit. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Quarter past eight, a hurried refuel on the trip in, and you realise somewhere around eleven — by which time your diesel Renault Megane has been parked at Dore & Totley for three hours. Phone then keep the car precisely where it is. The journey in is the thing that matters most, because diesel performs two tasks on its way through a motor: it burns, and before it combusts it lubricates the high-pressure pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. So those couple of miles were covered with the pump working on a fluid that had given up a lot of the protection it is built around — which is why the question we ask is how far you travelled, not how long your car has been parked.

Tell us this much and our technicians can work with it: a diesel Volkswagen Passat, a couple of litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, switched off at Bradway Post Office now. Time gone by isn't the thing we need. Fuel pulled by your pump is.

None of that is the engine failing. That is the part worth hearing, and it's why the usual Twentywellsick Wood Nature Reserve call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Audi A4 drives out there without a murmur, comes back with the power gone, your idle uneven and perhaps a little smoke, and the cause is the fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the precision parts it passes through; petrol thins it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing your fuel to hold pressure rather than only to burn. So pressure that should build then stay built bleeds past tolerances, delivery arrives weaker and later and less even than engineered, and all of that stops once the fuel is corrected.

Unfamiliar places are where this occurs most, and the reason is mechanical rather than sloppy: the smaller petrol nozzle slides into a newer diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all. Fuelled up near Dore and Totley golf club without thinking, in a diesel Mercedes E-Class you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anybody realises, and distance is what settles how much petrol gets to the injectors.

No warning exists for this, which is why vehicles in that position generally get driven a second time before somebody calls. Please don't be one of them. The throttle went limp and your idle turned uneven after a couple of streets, and your diesel Vauxhall Astra is now waiting near Broadway Bowling Club. Deadness there means fuel that cannot build pressure properly instead of a motor failing. Switch off. Phone us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Upper Bradway

Can petrol be drained out of your diesel at the forecourt?

The job begins at the pump, usually. Frequently the job wraps up there too. We operate on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the site's consent, so if you are still at Esso that's usually where this drain gets done.

Before your motor has fired — the forecourt is the single location this gets stopped. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump. That's not a calamity, and our engineers can still put it right where it sits. It does mean the fuel lines and your filter need flushing as well as your tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for your key.

The staff will normally offer to roll the car away from the pump so the next motorist can get by. That's worth doing. Rolling it four bays doesn't merit firing the engine.

Service around Upper Bradway

Bradway Bank, Bradway, Totley Rise, Lower Bradway, Mickley — all of these on the rounds that carry us across to Upper Bradway too, a residential suburb.

If yours is not on this list it does not mean we do not come — there are pages for most towns in South Yorkshire, and the ones listed above are merely the nearest neighbours. Ring us to enquire instead of guessing — borders especially, and wherever your satnav tends to struggle with.

The area the page spans is on this map. Your car doesn't need to come to us. We operate over the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stuck by the kerbside anywhere around Upper Bradway?

Not everyone finds a suitable spot to pull over. If you worked it out after setting off and landed on the verge on Totley Lane, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that is a routine call for us rather than a rare one.

Out of the motor while it isn't safe to sit in it, with it when it is. Don't fire up the motor to limp it somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that mixture further into your fuel system. A van driving to an inconvenient location is no problem for us, and it is much better for your car than driving on.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

Your M1 is the one which counts here, and sits under 10 miles from Upper Bradway. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Come off at the next safe junction, turn off, and do not start it to reposition. Long drive? Anything close to the under 5 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the contamination. Say that on the call, as it alters what goes in our van.

Upper Bradway itself

What our engineers do when our technicians arrive with you in Upper Bradway

  • We find out what got in, how much, and if the engine has run. The answers shape the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.
  • The tank gets drained of everything.
  • What is left in the fuel system shouldn't be what started the problem, and so the lines get purged and the fuel filter cleared.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.
  • The motor is started and checked to make sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

After that it is ready to drive away. Everything is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been spotted soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Upper Bradway?

Do not fire it up: that first rule stands whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this fault itself. Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes rust and residue.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Upper Bradway page. Both are ours to handle.

Upper Bradway prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

What changes the price is laid out below, as the job isn't one job and our engineers cannot honestly put a single price on this page.

  • This is the big one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that proportion.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can safely reach the car and work on it, which rests on where your vehicle is.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and if your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is good for that.

Things we get about petrol in diesel in Upper Bradway

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Upper Bradway?

Much of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes. We attend JET and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the site's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you if our technicians can work there.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Ratio decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mixture drawn through it.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what takes the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it is recoverable far more frequently than motorists assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It isn't a change, so a drain and flush carried out correctly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to stay off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a separate era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores. Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no break from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

There's no need to take it to a dealership, because our engineers drain and clean the car wherever it is.

You, and your car, still together?

Do not turn it on again.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, switch off, and let it remain that way. This is recoverable from much more frequently than motorists fear, and a parked, cold car is the best place to be in.
