Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Upper Burgate?

Do not fire up the motor. If the fuel is still in the tank and your engine has not run, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes — and that gets settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they stand, throughout Upper Burgate and the rest of Hampshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. One ring our way is plenty: our engineers can tell you what follows from here. Make it right away.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will typically fail to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it drives off — all right for a few miles. Motorists have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not fire it up. And having started, don't rely on it: your fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it combusts it protects — the high-pressure pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the ignition off also: turning it on is usually enough to prime your system, and priming moves petrol from your tank into precisely those parts.
  • That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It will not. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a fuller tank of the same mix. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Sit tight if it's safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Fryern Court Road, anywhere — an awkward location for us trumps a started motor, and nothing is simpler for us to handle than a car that never shifted.
  • Our van showing up instead of circling hinges on two things: a postcode beginning SP6 1, and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it. Get both prepared before you call.
  • What went in, roughly how much, plus if the engine has started — those three replies decide the entire call-out. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Can petrol be pumped from a diesel on the forecourt?

A large part of the job ends up finished at the pump, because that's where it usually begins. Still at Harvest Energy? Then that's typically where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the permission of the site.

Nowhere else but a garage can the mistake be halted with the engine still untouched. The few seconds between checking your receipt and going for your key determine how much needs rinsing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter need rinsing as well as your tank. It's not a catastrophe, and we can still deal with it where the vehicle sits.

Push the car out of the way if the attendants offer, and they usually will. The next motorist gets past the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Shifting it four lengths doesn't justify firing the motor.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Upper Burgate

We are in car parks like the one at The Co-operative Food a lot, and it's almost never your fuel that complicates them. It is that bay. Motors both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. At times a height bar at the way in, which determines if a van reaches you at all. So say how penned in you are when you ring, and which way your car is facing. If there is no room to work next to your Skoda Octavia, our engineers shift it without your engine. That is not fuss over a handful of seconds: starts prime things, mixture comes out of the tank towards the pump, and a vehicle shuffled twice for a better bay is gradually a bigger job than one nobody touched.

Twenty to nine. At the gates of Fordingbridge Junior School. Late already, and the till receipt in your hand says unleaded. Switch your hazards on, leave the engine alone, and phone us. You could think three miles is nothing, in the BMW 3 Series or anything else — except that fuel is delivered to demand, and a dash taken in a rush asks for a great deal of it.

Here is what a job in the car park by Bat and Ball typically looks like. Our technicians reach the vehicle, ask what went in, about how much, and whether the motor has run since — these three replies settle much of the work. Then the tainted mix comes out of that tank, the lines get flushed, and the filter comes off where your Audi A4 has a serviceable one. Clean diesel goes in and the system is bled. Then our technicians fire it up, check it runs correctly, and you drive away.

Why so direct about leaving your keys alone? Since the pump is ahead of the fuel injectors, and a worn one sends whatever it sheds downstream with your fuel. Phone us. Leave the Mercedes E-Class by Amphitheatre.

What takes place next is the issue. The engine immediately pulls the petrol still resting in the filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, because draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put new diesel in, somebody confident will tell you — and that advice is half right, because do it to a diesel Kia Sportage parked up, Burgate Manor say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound sensible. Ring us instead. Our technicians flush the circuit and take your filter off where the vehicle has a serviceable one, and that is the difference between the vehicle being fixed and the car just starting.

Parts we serve near Upper Burgate

Upper Burgate is a rural hamlet, and so our vans head out to the town and to the places around it on those same rounds: Lower Burgate, Tinkers Cross, Flood Street, Outwick and Breamore.

Not on the list? That tells you nothing. The places above are only the closest few, and most places across Hampshire have a page of their own somewhere on the site. Presuming is the thing to skip, especially on a boundary or anywhere a satnav goes wrong. Ring us to ask.

Use the map for the area included on this page. Our technicians work at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of it, and your car never needs to come to us.

Upper Burgate: stranded wherever you parked

Not everyone gets a chance to pull over somewhere safe. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of A338 as you noticed after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it is the usual kind.

Okay where you are? Wait with it. Not fine? Climb out and clear of it. Do not start it up to reach a nicer place. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mixture deeper into the system. Pressing on does the car far more harm than a technician heading out to a difficult spot, and that is no trouble for us.

Driven it already? Stop, and check below

This is where the local M27 counts, under 10 miles away from Upper Burgate. A drop in power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they appear, instead of a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

The next safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. Long trip? Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the contamination. Say that on the phone, since it affects what goes in our van.

Upper Burgate itself

Upper Burgate is a small hamlet situated on the riverside in Hampshire, with an elevation of 31 metres above sea level. Upper Burgate lies near the city of Salisbury, approximately 8.6 miles away, and is part of a network of small settlements including Lower Burgate and Tinkers Cross. Upper Burgate is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock and quiet rural setting. Upper Burgate is located in the South East region of England, about 81.4 miles from London.

What our technicians do when our engineers reach you around Upper Burgate

  • The answers alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what got in, how much of it, and if your engine has run.
  • Our engineers drain that tank of the tainted mixture.
  • Fuel lines are purged through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that started any of this.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • It's started with clean diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it's running correctly.

That has your car ready to pull away. All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught soon, lasting damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Upper Burgate?

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening step is the same — don't crank it — yet the problem isn't. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and build-up in its place.

Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Upper Burgate page. Both are ours to handle.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Upper Burgate

Honestly, no single figure fits on a page like this. This job changes. Here's what varies it:

  • Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the key one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, measured against how much the tank holds.
  • The type of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is sensible for a technician.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is good for that.

Questions our technicians get about petrol in diesel around Upper Burgate

At a petrol station in Upper Burgate, can you do a fuel drain there?

A good part of this work gets done there, so yes. Routinely, provided the site agrees: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that spot is something we answer on the spot.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether the engine has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that mix has been drawn through the fuel system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What now?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. It is salvageable far more commonly than motorists fear, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly is not an alteration and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has diluted is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate issue. So no. The pump still has to put up with it, since your tank still has petrol in it after that.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. We drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Keep it shut off.

Switch it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best position available — and drivers fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
