Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Upper Haugh?

With your tank still holding the petrol and your engine not yet turned over, almost every job needs only a drain, so keep your engine off. That outcome is decided in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that got in. All over Upper Haugh and the remainder of South Yorkshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it is, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. Contact us and then our engineers can explain what follows next before you do much else.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • As you drive, your pump and the injectors wear down. That is why you never fire it up, and why you don't trust it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel especially — the bit most people get wrong — is that it drives away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically won't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the harm with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only does the one. Which is why the car's ignition remains off too — flick it on and you usually prime the system, and that is petrol leaving that tank for exactly those parts.
  • Do not put diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage in the way that guidance suggests, and topping up takes out nothing — it simply hands you a bigger tank of the same mix. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Stay still if it is safe to. Hazards on, engine off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Harding Avenue, anywhere — a tricky place for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is easier for us to handle than a vehicle that never moved.
  • Get your position ready before you ring. A postcode that starts S62 7 and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it is the difference between a van arriving and the van circling.
  • What got in, approximately how many litres, and if the car has run — these three details decide the whole job. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Clearing petrol from the diesel on the forecourt

Forecourts are where this work usually begins, and where a large part of that finishes. Our technicians work on station forecourts routinely, with the owner's permission, so if you're still at Shell that is usually where the drain happens.

A forecourt is the single location this can be stopped before the engine has fired. The few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the key decide how much needs rinsing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from your tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and your filter require rinsing as well as the tank. It is not a catastrophe, and we can still put it right where the car stands.

The attendants will normally help you roll the car out from the pump so the next customer can get by. It is worth doing. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth the risk.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Upper Haugh

The tricky part is the bay, not the fuel. Cars either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and occasionally a height bar on the way in that settles if a technician can reach you at all — so when you call from a car park like the one at Heron Foods, say how much space there's around you and which way round the vehicle is. Those we attend frequently. Should there be no space to work alongside your diesel BMW 3 Series, it gets moved with your engine off, and not out of fussiness over a handful of seconds of running: priming occurs at every start, more of that blend departs your tank for the pump, and two shunts into a better spot have gradually made a harder job of what was simply a vehicle standing still.

Twenty to nine. By Monkwood Primary School. Late already, and the till receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Turn the hazards on, leave the ignition alone, and ring us. You may think three miles is nothing, in the Audi A4 or anything else — except that fuel is delivered to demand, and a drive taken in a rush needs a great deal of that.

Nothing is getting worse while it stands. Whatever the diesel Peugeot 208 did on the way to Upper Haugh Cricket Club, it is doing none of that now: the pump is not turning. So take your time — but don't drive the car home to buy yourself any.

Rattling, a ragged idle, white smoke, a throttle gone soft. That's a wrongly fuelled diesel Skoda Superb telling you what's wrong. Turn off where you have stopped, near Steps to Health Walk Metal Statue or anywhere else, and don't restart the vehicle to find a better location.

No warning light exists for this, which is why cars in that position generally get driven a second time before somebody rings. Please don't be one of them. The throttle went limp and your idle turned uneven after a couple of streets, and your diesel Hyundai Tucson is now sitting by Rosehill Park Leaf Sculpture. Sluggishness there means fuel that cannot build pressure properly instead of a motor packing up. Switch off. Call us.

Upper Haugh plus the villages beside it

Being a residential suburb, Upper Haugh gets a steady call, and the areas nearby come with it on that same round: Low Stubbin and Higher Stubbin, Nether Haugh and Abdy, Rawmarsh.

Not on that list? That means nothing. The names above are only the closest few, and most places around South Yorkshire have a page of their own somewhere on the site. Ring us to ask instead of guessing, above all if you're on the border or anywhere your phone struggles with.

Check this map for the area included here. Your vehicle does not need to travel to us. We operate over every bit of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Roadside call-outs across Upper Haugh

Not everyone has a sensible place to pull in. A normal call for us and not an odd one: realised after setting off, landed by the verge on Green Rise or in a lay-by with your hazards flashing.

Out of the car while it's not wise to sit inside, by it if it is. Never fire up your engine to nurse the car somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that mixture further into the fuel system. A technician driving to an awkward spot is no bother for us, and it's far better for the vehicle than carrying on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

under 5 miles out of Upper Haugh, the M1 is what counts now. A misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they appear are typically a drop in power, a lumpy idle and some smoke rather than a clean stop.

Don't start it to move it. Pull off at the next safe exit then turn off. Presume the worst of that on a long run. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through the filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Tell us when you phone. What we bring alters.

Once we get to you in Upper Haugh: what we do

  • The replies alter the work, which is why we ask before quoting: what went in, how much of it, and whether the motor has run.
  • The contaminated fuel comes from the tank.
  • Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever remains afterwards is not the thing that started the problem.
  • Your system gets bled, on clean diesel.
  • Our engineers fire it up and check it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

At that point it's ready to set off. All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been caught soon, long-term damage is very rare.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Upper Haugh is a different job

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first rule is unchanged — don't fire it up — but the fault isn't. Petrol thins your diesel and removes the protection the fuel system depends on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Upper Haugh page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Upper Haugh

One price wouldn't be fair here, as this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, measured against how much your tank can hold.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.
  • Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and whether your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. If it's not urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel: everyday queries around Upper Haugh

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Upper Haugh?

Yes, and it's where a large part of this work takes place. Our engineers attend another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts locally regularly, with the station's consent — tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres are not the measure. Proportion is, and much more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that blend sucked through it.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. It is fixable far more commonly than drivers expect, even though driving is what takes the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to remain off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Later? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Is your vehicle still with you?

That engine stays off.

If you have already driven it, pull over somewhere sensible, switch it off then keep it off. A stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more frequently than motorists fear.
