Upper Stratton: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
With that tank still carrying the fuel and your engine not yet run, nearly every job needs only a drain, so leave your engine off. That outcome is decided in the minutes immediately after filling up, and not by the amount that went in. Throughout Upper Stratton and the rest of Wiltshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. We will show you what your next move is. Phone — it goes ahead of everything else.
Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel
- Never fire it up — and never trust it if it starts. That is the thing motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine filled with diesel normally just won't run, and so the person stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel given petrol usually starts, idles and drives away quite happily for several miles. It is not okay. It's wearing your fuel system while you drive.
- Diesel ignites, and before it burns it lubricates — your high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the ignition off also: turning it on is usually sufficient to prime that system, and priming moves petrol from your tank into just those components.
- Topping up takes out nothing. It gives you a bigger tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system doesn't handle petrol by percentage as that advice presumes — so do not put diesel on top to weaken it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
- Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that hasn't moved is the simplest one to deal with, and we would rather drive to an awkward location than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Saint Philip's Road, turn those hazards on then keep the vehicle there.
- Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode starting SN2 7, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than showing up.
- What was put in, roughly how much, and also whether the car has started — the three answers shape the whole visit. Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us.
Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel
Plenty of this job starts at the pump, which means a fair chunk of it gets done at one. The drain normally gets done on the spot. Still on the forecourt at BP? Given the site's permission, that is somewhere we work, and regularly.
Nowhere but the forecourt can this be spotted with the motor still untouched. Our engineers can still deal with it where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been switched on and moved there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a catastrophe, but the flush then has to reach past your tank to the lines and your filter, and the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for your key are what settle that.
Staff will normally pitch in pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next customer get by. Accept the assistance. Moving it four spaces does not justify firing the engine.
Diesel Volkswagen Passat. A few litres of unleaded. Run a couple of miles. Switched off now, outside Aldi. That's the call we want, since the question underneath it's about quantity through your pump instead of hours on the clock.
How far, and how hard? The second of those matters more than the first, and so have both ready. Your BMW 3 Series will have felt perfectly normal on the way back from Beechcroft Infant School — they all do, and that is the catch. Diesel into a petrol vehicle usually won't run at all: the person stops, and so does the damage. Petrol into a diesel fires up, idles, moves off like nothing happened, while the high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the lubrication the fuel should be giving it. No warning comes, because behind the wheel nothing seems wrong.
Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off and ring us. Happy on the way out to Merton Fields Millennium Green, sluggish on the way back? Then look at the tank. Petrol thins diesel; thinner fuel leaks past the close-fitting components that build injection pressure; and the further the diesel Mercedes C-Class went, the less of that pressure it held.
Emptying your Dacia Duster, changing the filter where there's a usable one, rinsing the fuel lines, putting fresh fuel through the full circuit: that is the job, and it is shaped by the worst of it sitting in your lines instead of in the tank by this point. Three things help when you ring from near Upper Stratton Public Library — which side the filler is on, whether a technician can park alongside without blocking the road, and whether your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest spot our engineers work, and so the place itself is rarely the trouble. A tight parking bay trumps a motor driven somewhere more convenient.
A vehicle you picked up two days ago gets driven further before anybody spots anything, which is the hire and courtesy problem in one sentence — and how far it went is what decides the amount of petrol arriving at your injectors. Nothing careless about the mistake itself: a modern diesel filler neck takes the narrower petrol nozzle with practically no resistance, and so new locations see most of these. Ring us from wherever you are, near Saint Philip the Deacon Church or not, and we'll get to the Peugeot 3008.
Can our technicians cover your side of Upper Stratton?
Those same runs bring us to Kingsdown, Penhill, Pinehurst, Stratton St Margaret and Groundwell as well as Upper Stratton, which is a residential suburb.
If yours isn't on that list it does not mean we do not come — there are pages for the majority of towns in Wiltshire, and the ones named above are merely the closest neighbours. On the boundary, or somewhere your phone struggles with? Ring us to ask rather than presuming.
The ground the page covers appears on this map. Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: all of it is ground our technicians work on, and none of that requires your car to come to us.
Upper Stratton: stranded where you pulled up
Not everybody gets the opportunity to stop somewhere sensible. If you worked it out after setting off and finished up on the verge of Farrfield, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards going, that is a normal call for us and not an odd one.
Wait with the motor when it is wise to sit there, and out of the car when it is not. Never fire it up to get to a safer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mixture deeper into the system. A technician coming to an inconvenient spot is no problem for us, and it's a lot better for the car than carrying on.
Driven it already? Pull in, and read this
Here is where your M4 comes into it — under 5 miles away from Upper Stratton. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's some smoke, a rough idle and power draining away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.
The first safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. Presume the worst of it on a long drive. Anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through your filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you phone. What our technicians bring differs.
Where is Upper Stratton?
Upper Stratton is a suburban area in Wiltshire, situated inland at an elevation of 116 metres, and forms part of the larger Swindon urban area. Upper Stratton is located near several other suburban areas, including Kingsdown, Penhill, and Pinehurst, and is approximately 24.5 miles from Oxford. Upper Stratton has a population of around 6107 people and is characterised by predominantly semi-detached housing. Upper Stratton is also within commuting distance of London, being around 70.6 miles away.
Once we arrive with you in Upper Stratton: what happens
- The responses change the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what got in, how much of it, and if your motor has run.
- Out goes the polluted mixture.
- Fuel lines are purged through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that started any of this.
- The system gets bled, on new diesel.
- The engine is turned on and tested to make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.
Then it's ready to pull away. Permanent damage is very rare when it has been spotted early, and because all of this is done where the car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.
A separate problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Upper Stratton
AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — the motor stays off — whereas this problem underneath it's a separate one altogether. The protection a fuel system depends on gets stripped away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.
AdBlue removal in Upper Stratton has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is frequently the more serious of the two. Our engineers cover both.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Upper Stratton?
One number would not be fair here, as this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:
- This is the key one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
- AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.
- Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is safe for a van.
The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range. Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.
Questions our technicians hear about petrol in diesel in Upper Stratton
Fuel drains on a Upper Stratton petrol station forecourt
Much of what our technicians do happens nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you whether we can work there. With the site's consent our engineers attend another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts around town routinely.
Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?
Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. What decides how much work is needed is whether that blend has been pulled through the system — because even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that is the query.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What now?
Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of the tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable far more frequently than motorists expect.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a distinct problem and it does not put back what petrol has diluted. The tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to cope with it.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?
You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.
Waiting next to it?
Leave the car shut off.
Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later on. This is recoverable from a lot more regularly than drivers expect, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
