Upper Tooting: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
With your tank still carrying the fuel and the motor not yet run, almost every job takes only a drain, so leave your engine off. That result is decided in the minutes immediately after filling up, rather than by the amount that went in. Throughout Upper Tooting and the rest of Greater London, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it stands, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. Just one call to us is enough: our engineers will tell you what follows next. Make this straight away.
The first five steps: petrol in a diesel
- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine for a few miles. People have that backwards, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So never start it. And having started, don't believe it: that fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.
- Flicking your ignition on often primes that system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of the tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol manages the burning and none of the protecting. Leave your ignition alone.
- Don't pour diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes, and topping up takes out nothing — it just gives you a bigger tank of the same blend. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
- We'd sooner come to an awkward spot than have it started — so if you safely can, stay put. Nothing is quicker to handle than a vehicle that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Trinity Road, that means hazards on then leave it.
- Get your location prepared before you ring. A postcode starting SW17 7 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between our van showing up and a van circling.
- Phone 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, about how many litres, plus whether the motor has started. Those three replies settle your whole call-out.
The high-pressure fuel pump spent that morning commute labouring on a liquid that had lost a lot of the protection it is designed around. Diesel greases that pump, and the fuel injectors with it, before any of your fuel combusts; petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. So picture a diesel Renault Megane, filled at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and left sitting at Wandsworth Common until you realise close to eleven. Three hours of standing have changed nothing about it. The few miles before that did a good deal, which is why the thing our engineers ask you is about distance rather than hours. Call us. Leave it exactly where it stands.
Straightforward, these ones, and the reason is the miles: a mile at gentle throttle pulls very little fuel. Petrol into a diesel Skoda Octavia somewhere in Upper Tooting, a boot full of shopping, and you stuck outside Tolian's — phone us. Exiting that spot isn't worth another start. That tank gets cleared where it waits, the fuel lines purged, clean diesel in, and you head home.
A diesel Mercedes C-Class parked in the parking area by The Wheatsheaf holding a tank of petrol in it is a straightforward job, right up until somebody takes it home. Leave the vehicle there overnight then phone us next morning. Nothing degrades while it sits. What we will want to know is if the run there was short and chilly, because that is where petrol is slowest to burn properly — and anything that won't burn can get past the piston rings then into the engine oil.
Injection pressure is the thing being lost. Petrol dilutes diesel, and thinner fuel slips past the tightly fitted components that are supposed to build that pressure, and so the further a diesel Dacia Duster went, the less well it held. Fine on the way out and gutless on the way back is how that run to Trinity Fields went, then, and your tank is where to look. Pull over somewhere safe, switch off and ring us.
Why so blunt about leaving your keys alone? Since your pump is ahead of the injectors, and a worn one sends whatever it loses downstream with your fuel. Ring us. Leave the Vauxhall Astra by Holy Trinity.
At a forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel
A large part of the job gets finished at a forecourt, because that is where it mostly starts. We operate on station forecourts routinely, with the site's agreement, and so if you're still at BP that is generally where this drain gets done.
Before the motor has fired — a forecourt is the one place the mistake is halted. The few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the keys determine how much needs flushing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and the filter need cleaning as well as your tank. It is not a calamity, and we can still sort it out where your car sits.
Push it out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they normally will. The next customer gets past the pump, and that's worth doing. Shifting the car four lengths does not merit firing the engine.
Will our engineers cover your part of Upper Tooting?
Tooting Bec Common, Balham, Tooting Bec, Tooting, Wandsworth Common — all of them on the runs that take us across to Upper Tooting as well, a residential suburb.
Not on the list? That tells you nothing. The names above are simply the nearest few, and most locations in Greater London have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Close to a border, or anywhere a satnav struggles with? Call us and ask rather than guessing.
This map is the area this page includes. The lot is territory we cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You do not drive the vehicle anywhere.
Stuck by the kerb somewhere in Upper Tooting?
Some drivers find no suitable place to pull over whatsoever. Set off, then twigged? Ended up along the verge on Saint James's Drive, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards on? That is a common call here. Not an unusual one.
Fine there? Sit with it. Not safe? Climb out and clear of it. Don't start it up to reach a better spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the blend deeper into the system. However inconvenient the spot, it is no trouble for us to get to it, and that's far better for the vehicle than pressing on.
So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles
The local M4 is the one which matters now, and runs under 10 miles from Upper Tooting. A wrongly fuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they appear are usually a loss of power, a rough idle and smoke rather than a tidy stop.
Don't restart it to move it. Come off at the next safe junction and switch off. Presume the worst of that on a long run. Anything near the under 5 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Say so when you ring. What we bring changes.
A bit about Upper Tooting
Upper Tooting is a suburban area in south London, situated approximately 4.9 miles from central London and 4.5 miles from Westminster. Upper Tooting is characterised by its predominantly flat-type housing and is located near several open spaces, including Tooting Bec Common. Upper Tooting sits at an elevation of around 37 metres, in a densely populated part of the city.
What follows when our engineers reach you in Upper Tooting
- Our engineers establish what was put in, how much, and if the engine has run. The answers shape the work, which is why we ask before quoting.
- Out goes the contaminated fuel.
- What is left in the system should not be what caused the issue, and so your fuel lines get rinsed and the filter cleaned.
- The fuel system gets bled, on clean diesel.
- Once it's started, our technicians confirm it runs properly on clean diesel.
That leaves it ready to set off. There is no need to go to a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's noticed soon, lasting damage is very unusual.
Upper Tooting AdBlue removal is a different job
AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — the engine remains off — whereas this issue underneath it's a different one altogether. The lubrication a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which thins your diesel. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and deposits.
Both are ours. There's a separate Upper Tooting page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.
Upper Tooting prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
Our engineers can't put one number on this page frankly, since the job is not one job. What moves it:
- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
- How much of the wrong fuel went in, measured against how much that tank holds.
- Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there safely?
Tell us the vehicle, the amount and whether it has run, and you'll get a straight answer instead of a range. Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.
Petrol in diesel questions from Upper Tooting motorists
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Upper Tooting?
Yes — forecourts are where a fair share of this gets done. Routinely, provided the site agrees: Tesco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that spot is something our engineers answer on the spot.
A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. What determines how much work is needed is whether that mix has been pulled through the system — since though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one, either way that's the question.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. Now what?
Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what takes the trouble from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it is salvageable a lot more frequently than drivers assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
No. Carried out correctly, emptying and cleaning is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.
Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a separate problem and it does not restore what petrol has diluted. Your tank still has petrol in it after that, and your pump still has to cope with it.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?
No. We drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a dealership.
Standing next to it?
Switched off is how the car remains.
If you have already driven it, stop somewhere safe, switch it off and keep it off. A stationary, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more regularly than drivers assume.
