Petrol in a Diesel Car in Upper Wyke
Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, all over Upper Wyke and the remainder of West Yorkshire. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. While the motor has not yet been started and the fuel is still inside that tank, a tank drain is almost always all it needs, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much went in. Contact us before everything else starts, so you will hear what comes next.
What next? Petrol in a diesel, in order
- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will normally not run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine enough for several miles. People have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't crank it. And once started, do not believe it: your fuel system is wearing as you drive.
- Leave your ignition alone also. Diesel has two tasks: it ignites, and before it combusts it lubricates your high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is commonly all it takes to prime that system, which moves this petrol out of that tank then into just those components.
- Topping up gets rid of nothing. It gives you a larger tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes — so never put diesel on top to thin it. Grade is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
- We would much rather come to a difficult location than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay put. Nothing is simpler to handle than a vehicle that has never moved. On the verge on Mayfield Avenue, that means hazards on and keep the vehicle.
- A van arriving rather than circling rests on two things: a postcode beginning BD12 8, and whatever is closest to you with a label on it. Have both prepared before you phone.
- What got in, about how many litres, plus whether the motor has fired — those three facts settle your whole call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.
Can petrol be pumped from your diesel on a forecourt?
It begins at the pump, mostly. Often enough the work ends on site too. If you're still at the forecourt at Esso, that's normally where this drain happens — we work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the owner's consent.
A forecourt is the one setting this can be stopped before your motor has started. The few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for your key determine how much needs flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the filter require flushing as well as that tank. It's not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where the car sits.
Wheel it out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they normally will. The next motorist gets past the pump, and that's worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth a restart.
The tricky part is that bay, not the fuel. Vehicles either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and now and then a height limit on the way in that determines if a technician can get to you at all — so when you call from a car park like the one at Asda, mention how much space there's about you and which way round the car is. Those we attend frequently. Should there be no room to work next to the diesel Skoda Octavia, it gets moved with the motor off, and not out of fuss over a handful of seconds of running: priming takes place at every start, more of the mix leaves the tank for the pump, and two shunts into a nicer bay have quietly made a worse job of what was merely a vehicle standing still.
Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and mostly it won't run, and so the person stops there and the harm stops with them. Flip it — petrol into a diesel — and the car starts, ticks over and pulls away as though nothing had happened, while the high-pressure pump works without the lubrication your fuel is supposed to be giving. That's the snag, and it's why the diesel BMW 3 Series will have felt entirely usual coming back from Worthinghead Primary School. They always do. From behind the wheel there's nothing to alert you about, and so nothing tells you. Phone us with approximately how far you drove, and how hard; the second answer matters more than the first.
A diesel Nissan Qashqai sitting in the parking area at Top Odd carrying a tank full of petrol in it is a straightforward job, right up till somebody drives it home. Leave it overnight then ring us next morning. Nothing worsens whilst it waits. What we will want to know is whether that drive there was brief and cold, because that's where petrol is slowest to burn correctly — and anything that won't burn can slip past the rings then into the engine oil.
The smaller petrol nozzle slides into a current diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical not careless. Unfamiliar places see most of that for that reason. So: topped up near Cenotaph without thinking, in a diesel Peugeot 3008 you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars tend to get driven further before anybody spots it, and mileage determines how much petrol gets to the injectors.
A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle limp, idle lumpy, and your diesel Ford Kuga is parked up by Aldersgate Methodist Church. Your engine is not giving up — that sluggishness is fuel that will not build pressure. There is no light on the dash for it, and so motors like yours normally get driven again before anyone picks up the phone. Please don't. Off, and ring us.
Areas our vans reach in Upper Wyke
Upper Common, New Road Side, Carr House Gate, Wyke Common, Wyke — every one of these on our trips that carry us out to Upper Wyke as well, a residential suburb.
If yours is not on this list that does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all towns around West Yorkshire, and the ones mentioned above are merely the nearest neighbours. Near the border, or somewhere a satnav struggles with? Phone and check instead of presuming.
That map shows the patch the page covers. We operate roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of it, and your car does not need to come to us.
Stuck by the roadside anywhere in Upper Wyke?
The opportunity to stop somewhere sensible does not fall to everybody. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Wroe Place as you worked it out after setting off — our engineers take that call so often that it's the normal kind.
Stay beside the motor if it is wise to wait there, but out of it when it isn't. Never restart it to get to a nicer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mix deeper into your fuel system. Driving on causes the car far more harm than a technician coming out to a tricky location, and that's no problem for us.
So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles
under 3 miles from Upper Wyke, the local M606 is what counts here. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will frequently do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power ebbs away, the idle goes uneven, and there may be smoke.
Pull off at the next safe exit, turn off, and do not restart the vehicle to reposition. Long run? Anything close to the under 5 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the contamination. Say that on the phone, because it alters what goes in the van.

Once we arrive with you in Upper Wyke: what we do
- Three things get asked before any quote — the fuel that was put in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
- Away comes the contaminated fuel.
- Our engineers rinse your fuel lines and clean the filter, and so what is left in the fuel system isn't what caused the problem.
- Your system gets bled, on clean diesel.
- The engine is turned on and tested to confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.
From there, you're ready to drive away. Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed early, long-term damage is very rare.
AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Upper Wyke?
Do not start it: that opening instruction stands whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the problem itself. The protection a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and build-up.
Our technicians cover both, and AdBlue removal in Upper Wyke has its own page with the details — including why it is usually the more serious of the two.
Upper Wyke costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
We cannot put one number on this page frankly, as this job is not one job. What changes it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that proportion.
- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.
- Whether our van can sensibly get to the car and work on it, which rests on where the vehicle is.
The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear instead of as a range. Not urgent, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.
Petrol in diesel: everyday queries in Upper Wyke
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Upper Wyke?
A big part of this work gets done there, so yes. Routinely, provided the site agrees: Tesco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something our technicians answer there and then.
Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?
Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and far more than either, it counts if anything has been run. What settles how much work is needed is whether that mix has been sucked through the system — because although five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one, either way that is the question.
Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?
Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. It is fixable far more regularly than drivers expect, even though driving is what takes the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
No. Carried out properly, emptying and cleaning is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle turned off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. The tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to put up with it.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?
Wherever the car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.
You, and your vehicle, still together?
Keep the engine shut off.
Switch it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.
