Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Valley Park? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, across Valley Park and the remainder of Hampshire. The first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. When the engine has not been started and the petrol is still sitting in your tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much was put in. Our technicians will explain what the next move will be. Contact us — this goes ahead of everything else.

The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Do not start the car — and do not believe it if it runs. This is the bit most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine filled with diesel usually just won't run, so the person stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol generally starts, idles and pulls away quite happily for a few miles. It's not all right. It is eating into your fuel system as you drive.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it ignites it protects — that high-pressure fuel pump, those injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the car's ignition alone as well: switching it on is frequently all it takes to prime your system, and priming pulls petrol from your tank into precisely those parts.
  • Do not tip diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes, and topping up clears nothing — it simply hands you a larger tank of the same blend. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A car that has not shifted is the simplest one to handle, and our team would much rather drive to a tricky place than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Skys Wood Road, turn your hazards on and leave it there.
  • Before you call, get your whereabouts. Anything nearest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode beginning SO53 4 — that's what determines whether our van turns up or circles.
  • What got in, roughly how many litres, and if the engine has run — those three facts decide your whole call-out. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Can petrol be pumped from a diesel at the forecourt?

Pumps are where the work mostly begins, and where a big share of that ends. We work on station forecourts regularly, with the station's consent, and so if you're still at Asda that's generally where the drain takes place.

Before your engine has fired — a garage is the only place the mistake gets stopped. Our engineers can still sort it out where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been switched on and moved there, and that sucked fuel through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a catastrophe, though the flush then has to go past the tank to the lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the key are what settle that.

Attendants will normally chip in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get through. Accept the offer. Four vehicle lengths is not worth the risk.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Valley Park

How much fuel the pump has drawn is what we're truly asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the enquiry our technicians like sounds like this: diesel Nissan Qashqai, a few litres of unleaded, a couple of miles covered, now shut off outside Co-op Food.

What we will want to know is if that trip there was short and cold, as that's where petrol is least likely to burn fully — and what doesn't burn can work past the rings then into the engine oil. Right up to the moment somebody drives it home, a diesel Peugeot 3008 parked in the car park outside The Cleveland Bay holding a tank of petrol in it is a simple job. Nothing worsens whilst it stands, so leave the vehicle overnight then call us in the morning.

Calling from close to Knightwood Leisure Centre? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the vehicle it's on. Room for our van alongside you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The place itself barely counts: on-street is where our technicians work most, and we'd far rather have a tight bay than a car a person has driven somewhere quicker. Then it is a drain for the Citroen C3, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines rinsed, clean fuel put round the entire circuit. By now the worst of it is in the fuel lines and not that tank.

Hire car or company car? Phone them before you ring us — some agreements want the hire firm to authorise the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal quicker than sorting it later. Then ring us about the Volkswagen Polo by St Francis, and don't worry that you cannot say how full that tank was. Almost nobody can, in a car they picked up two days ago, and our technicians work it out on site. The reason our engineers ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a proportion: the same few litres in an almost empty tank is a far stronger blend than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger the mixture, the more it knocks, smokes and goes flat.

A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle dead, idle lumpy, and the diesel Ford Fiesta is parked up near Valley Park Community Centre. The motor isn't packing up — that deadness is fuel that will not build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, so cars like yours typically get driven once more before anyone picks up the phone. Do not. Off, and call us.

Service near Valley Park

Valley Park is a residential suburb, and our vans go out to it and to the villages by it on those same rounds: Cuckoo Bushes, Chandlers Ford, Bucket Corner, Fryern Hill and Hiltingbury.

There are pages for nearly all towns around Hampshire, and the ones listed above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being missing from the list means nothing at all about if our technicians come. Presuming is the thing to avoid, particularly on the border or somewhere the satnav gets lost. Contact us and enquire.

The area the page spans is on the map. Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: every bit of it is ground our technicians cover, and none of it needs the vehicle to move to us.

Stopped by the roadside somewhere in Valley Park?

Not everybody gets a suitable place to stop. If you realised after setting off and landed along the verge on Knightwood Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that is a routine call for us and not a rare one.

Clear of your car if it is not safe to wait there, with it when it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that mix further into your fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why your engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier. We will send our van to an inconvenient place without any fuss, and for your car that's far better than driving on.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

Your M3 is the road which matters here, and sits under 3 miles from Valley Park. A misfilled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they come are normally a drop in power, a rough idle and some smoke instead of a neat stop.

The next sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. It changes what our technicians bring, and so say so when you phone: on a longer run — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.

Valley Park itself

Valley Park is a suburban area in Hampshire, situated on the riverside with an elevation of around 25 metres. Valley Park lies near the city of Southampton, approximately 5.5 miles away, and is close to other nearby places such as Cuckoo Bushes and Chandlers Ford. Valley Park has a population of around 3158 people and is characterised by predominantly detached housing. Valley Park is also located within the wider South East region, about 65.8 miles from London.

Once our engineers get to you in Valley Park: what follows

  • Our engineers find out what was put in, how much, and whether your motor has run. The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.
  • Our engineers clear your tank of the tainted fuel.
  • What is remaining in your system shouldn't be what started the trouble, so the fuel lines get cleaned and your filter cleaned.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
  • It is started with clean diesel in it, and our technicians confirm that it's running smoothly.

From there, you are ready to pull away. There is no need for a garage at any point, as the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is spotted quickly, lasting damage is very uncommon.

Valley Park AdBlue removal is a different problem

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening rule is unchanged — never fire it up — but this fault is not. Thinned diesel, and no protection left for the system that depends on it. That is petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

AdBlue removal around Valley Park has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's often the more significant of the two. Our engineers handle both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Valley Park?

Our engineers can't put one figure on this page frankly, since the job isn't one job. What moves it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much the tank takes.
  • Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there safely?

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and if it has run. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.

Questions we get about petrol in diesel in Valley Park

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Valley Park?

A fair part of this work gets done there, so yes. Routinely, provided the site consents: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that location is something we answer there and then.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your motor has run counts far more, though the ratio matters too, instead of the litres. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what moves the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it's fixable far more commonly than drivers expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the car.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It isn't a modification, and so a drain then flush carried out properly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has weakened is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate fault. So no. Later? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, because our technicians drain and flush your car wherever it is.

Is your vehicle still with you?

Keep the car shut off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Drivers fear this far more than they need to.
