Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Vogue?

With your tank still holding the petrol and the engine not yet run, nearly every job needs only a drain, so keep the engine off. That outcome is settled in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that was put in. Throughout Vogue and the remainder of Cornwall, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it is, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. Contact us so we can explain what comes next before you attempt much else.

What to do first about petrol in a diesel

  • Whenever you drive, the pump and your injectors wear down. That's why you do not crank it, and why you never depend on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel especially — the part motorists get wrong — is that it drives off happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine usually can't run at all, which stops the driver and stops the damage with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it ignites it greases — the high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave your ignition off as well: turning it on is usually all it takes to prime that system, and priming pulls petrol from that tank into just those components.
  • Never pour diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system doesn't handle petrol by percentage in the way that guidance assumes, and topping up clears nothing — it merely gives you a larger tank of the same blend. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Remain where you are if you safely can. A car that has not moved is the simplest one to deal with, and we would sooner travel to an odd location than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Vogue Hill, switch those hazards on and keep the vehicle there.
  • Keep your position ready before you ring. A postcode beginning TR16 5 and whatever is closest to you with a name on it is the difference between our van turning up and a van circling.
  • What went in, approximately how many litres, and if your car has started — those three facts shape your whole visit. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

The journey back would about double it, for no purpose at all. One commute has already forced a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of that Volkswagen Golf. So keep the vehicle where it stands. Ring us from the platform if that's easier — nobody needs you standing over the vehicle outside Redruth whilst our technicians get on, and tonight trumps finding out on Monday.

The tricky part is the bay, not your fuel. Motors either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and occasionally a height barrier on the way in that determines if a van can get to you at all — so when you phone from a car park like the one at Aldi, mention how much room there's about you and which way round the vehicle is. Those our technicians visit often. Should there be no space to work beside the diesel Renault Megane, it gets rolled with the engine off, and not out of fuss over a few seconds of running: priming happens at every start, more of the mixture exits the tank for the pump, and two shunts into a roomier spot have gradually made a worse job of what was simply a vehicle standing still.

You'll be told to move the vehicle clear of the gateway and fix it later. Do not. On the zig-zags outside St Day and Carharrack Community School, a wrongly fuelled Nissan Qashqai running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Start it three more times being helpful and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the lines, every prime pulls more petrol past your filter toward your pump. Let them grumble. Phone us.

Pull over somewhere safe, switch off and call us. Normal on the way out to Wheal Jewel Playing Field, gutless on the way back? Then look at the tank. Petrol weakens diesel; weaker fuel leaks past the tightly fitted parts that build injection pressure; and the further the diesel Dacia Duster drove, the less of that pressure it held.

About as well as this goes, once the engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and the diesel Peugeot 3008 left by St Day Community Centre scarcely two streets on. Phone us, and leave the vehicle off. A short drive does truly help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, and so the fuel filter and the pump have had thinned fuel through them — hence rinsing your lines rather than only draining your tank.

Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

Forecourts are where this work often starts, and where a fair portion of that finishes. We work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the site's consent, and so if you are still at Texaco that's normally where this drain happens.

Before your motor has fired — a garage is the single place this ends up stopped. Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what happens when the engine is switched on and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the fuel filter and the fuel lines together with that tank. That's still not a disaster, and we sort it out where your car stands. What determines it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after your receipt was checked.

Away from the pump, the next motorist can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you wheel the car. Very much worth it. Cranking the car to roll four car lengths is not.

Vogue plus the places beside it

Tolcarne, St Day, Lower Ninnis, Trefula, Higher Ninnis — all of those on our journeys that take us out to Vogue too, a residential suburb.

If yours is not on this list that does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all locations around Cornwall, and the ones named above are merely the immediate neighbours. Near a border, or somewhere your satnav gets wrong? Phone to ask rather than guessing.

That map is the patch this page includes. Every bit of that is ground our engineers cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't move the car anywhere.

Stopped at the roadside somewhere around Vogue?

Some drivers find no safe spot to pull in at all. A routine call for us and not an unusual one: realised after setting off, ended up by the verge of Tolcarne Road or at a lay-by with the hazards going.

Okay where you are? Wait with it. Not okay? Step out and clear of it. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the problem: restart it to reach somewhere better and that mixture goes further into the system with every mile driven. A technician heading to a difficult spot is no bother for us, and it is much better for the vehicle than pressing on.

Run it already? Stop, then read below

Here is where your M5 counts, over 50 miles away from Vogue. A misfilled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they arrive are usually a drop in power, a rough idle and some smoke rather than a tidy stop.

Don't start it to reposition. Come off at the next sensible junction then switch off. On a longer drive — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors, and say so when you call. It alters what our technicians bring.

Where's Vogue?

Vogue is a suburban area in Cornwall, situated inland at an elevation of 116 metres, approximately 6.4 miles from the city of Truro. Vogue is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting the area's residential development. Vogue is close to nearby places such as Tolcarne, St Day, and Lower Ninnis, and is part of the wider Truro urban area.

What happens when our engineers reach you around Vogue

  • Three things get checked before any price — the fuel that got in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • That tank is emptied of it.
  • What is remaining in your system should not be what caused the problem, and so your fuel lines get purged and the fuel filter cleared.
  • Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • After it's started, we make sure it runs properly on clean diesel.

From there, you are ready to drive away. Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught soon, long-term damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Vogue is a different job

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — your motor remains off — while this problem under it is a distinct one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the protection the system depends on. Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

AdBlue removal around Vogue has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is often the more significant of the two. Our technicians cover both.

Vogue costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Honestly, no single figure fits on a page like this. This job varies. Here's what changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, compared with how much the tank holds.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's safe for our van.

Tell us the vehicle, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a clear answer instead of a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.

Questions our engineers hear about petrol in diesel in Vogue

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Vogue?

A big part of this work happens there, so yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Shell is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there's possible.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether your motor has run counts far more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is whether that mix has been sucked through the system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what takes the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it's fixable much more regularly than drivers expect, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It is not an alteration, so a drain then flush carried out correctly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

What petrol has weakened is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a distinct issue. So no. The tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to put up with it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

You do not need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

Still with your vehicle?

Never turn the car back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car after that. Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best place available — and drivers fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

Throughout Cornwall and around Vogue: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
