Petrol in Diesel

Walton Hall: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not turned on the engine as yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is almost always what a vehicle needs while the fuel is still inside the tank and your engine has not yet turned over, which is why it's the following few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel goes to your car wherever it has ended up in Walton Hall or the rest of Buckinghamshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there. Contact us before all else begins, and you'll see what follows after that.

Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't crank it — and don't trust it if it fires up. This is the thing motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor given diesel usually just cannot run, so the driver stops and the harm halts with them. A diesel given petrol generally starts, ticks over and drives away perfectly well for a couple of miles. It's not fine. It's grinding your fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Turning the car's ignition on frequently primes that system, and priming is what carries petrol out of your tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it burns. Petrol handles the burning and none of the oiling. Leave your ignition alone.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system does not accept petrol by percentage as that guidance presumes — so don't tip diesel on top to weaken it. Octane is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to deal with, and we would much rather drive to a tricky location than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on V10 Brickhill Street, put your hazards on and keep it there.
  • Know where you are before calling. A postcode that starts MK10 9, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of turning up.
  • Three replies decide your whole call-out: the liquid you put in, the ballpark measure involved, plus if it has been running since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

The high-pressure fuel pump spent that morning commute labouring on a liquid that had lost much of the protection it is made for. Diesel protects that pump, and the injectors with it, before any of the fuel combusts; petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. So picture a diesel Volkswagen Golf, fuelled at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and left sitting at Bow Brickhill until it dawns on you around eleven. Three hours of sitting have changed nothing about it. The few miles before that altered a lot, which is why the thing our technicians put to you is about miles instead of hours. Call us. Leave it exactly where it stands.

Put diesel in a petrol motor and generally it will not run, and so the person stops there and the damage stops with them. Reverse it — petrol into a diesel — and the thing starts, ticks over and pulls away as though nothing had happened, while the high-pressure fuel pump works without the lubrication the fuel is supposed to be supplying. That is the trap, and it's why the diesel Peugeot 308 will have seemed completely normal coming back from St Bernadette's Catholic Primary School. They all do. From the driver's seat there's nothing to caution you about, and so nothing warns you. Phone with about how far you drove, and how hard; the second answer counts more than the first.

Here is what a job in the car park by Ye Olde Swan usually looks like. Our engineers get to the vehicle, ask what went in, approximately how much, and whether the motor has run since — these three answers determine most of the work. Then the tainted mixture comes out of the tank, your lines get rinsed, and the filter comes off where your Audi A4 has a serviceable one. Fresh diesel goes in and the fuel system is primed. Then we fire it up, check it runs properly, and you set off.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the till receipt, and left your diesel Mercedes E-Class up by Robert Hooke Building Landing Lights a few hundred yards later? That is about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Call us then leave it off. The short drive really assists, but it was still a start and a drive, and so weakened fuel has arrived at your filter and your pump — which is why our technicians clean your lines rather than only emptying your tank.

Hire car or company car? Phone them before you ring us — some contracts want the hire firm to sign off the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal quicker than sorting it later on. Then ring us about the Vauxhall Astra close to Berrill Lecture Theatre, and do not worry that you cannot say how full that tank was. Almost nobody can, in a vehicle they picked up two days ago, and our technicians work it out on site. The reason our technicians ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a proportion: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger blend than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger the blend, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

Plenty of this job starts at a pump, which means a big part of it ends up finished at one. If you are still at the forecourt at Tesco, that's generally where this drain happens — our technicians work on station forecourts routinely, with the station's consent.

At a garage, the mistake gets spotted with the engine never started, and no place else manages it. Our engineers can still sort it out where it stands, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been started and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump, right from that tank. None of that is a disaster, but the flush then has to go past that tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for your key are what settle that.

The staff will usually offer to wheel the vehicle clear of the pump so the next motorist can get past. That's worth doing. Firing the car just to shift four car lengths is not.

Walton Hall and the villages next to it

Monkston Park, Kents Hill, Walton Manor, Woughton Park, Monkston — all of these on our trips that take us out to Walton Hall too, a residential suburb.

Our technicians still come. Those names above are merely the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for most towns around Buckinghamshire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Contact us and check rather than assuming — borders above all, and anywhere the satnav may struggle with.

See this map for the ground covered on this page. The vehicle does not need to move to us. We work across all of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stopped on the kerbside somewhere in Walton Hall?

Not everybody has a suitable spot to pull over. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Hawkhurst Gate because you noticed after setting off — we take that call often enough that it's the normal kind.

Remain beside the car while it's safe to wait inside, but clear of the car if it is not. Do not start up the motor to nurse it somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mix further into the system. A van driving to a difficult spot is no bother for us, and it is far better for the vehicle than driving on.

Petrol in a diesel, and the motor has travelled

Here is where your M1 comes into it — under 3 miles away from Walton Hall. A loss of power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, rather than a neat stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Come off at the next sensible junction, turn off, and never restart the car to move it. Long trip? Anything near the under 3 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the contamination. Say that on the call, since it changes what goes in the van.

Where is Walton Hall?

Walton Hall is a suburban area located on the riverside in Buckinghamshire, with a mix of detached housing and a population of around 3056 residents. Walton Hall sits near the city of Milton Keynes, approximately 2.3 miles away, and is close to other nearby places such as Monkston Park and Kents Hill. Walton Hall is positioned at an elevation of 70 metres, within the South East region of England, and is about 43.7 miles from London. Walton Hall has a relatively low-density residential character, with predominantly detached homes.

What follows when we reach you around Walton Hall

  • Our engineers find out what went in, how much, and whether the engine has run. The answers shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.
  • The polluted mixture is pulled out of the tank.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later on isn't the thing that caused the trouble.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.
  • Our engineers turn it on and check it runs correctly on clean diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away. Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been caught soon, and as all of this is done where your car is, it never has to go to a workshop.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Walton Hall is a separate job

The fault isn't the same, though the opening rule is — never start it — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the protection your fuel system relies on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and residue.

Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Walton Hall page. Both are ours to handle.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Walton Hall?

Frankly, no single number fits on a page like this. This job differs. Here's what moves it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, measured against how much that tank holds.
  • Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where the vehicle is, and if a technician can sensibly reach and work on it.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear instead of as a range. If it's not urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: common questions in Walton Hall

At a petrol station in Walton Hall, can you do a fuel drain there?

Much of what our technicians do happens nowhere else. So yes. Our engineers attend BP and the other forecourts locally regularly, with the station's consent — tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres are not the measure. Proportion is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that mixture drawn through it.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of the tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable much more commonly than people fear.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It isn't a modification, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces. That tank still has petrol in it after that, and your pump still has to put up with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Keep the engine switched off.

Switch it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best place available — and drivers fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
