Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Wanstead?

If you have not started the motor as yet, do not. A drain and nothing more is almost always what a vehicle requires while the petrol is still sitting in that tank and your engine has not turned over, which is why it is the following few minutes that matter, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the vehicle wherever it has ended up in Wanstead or the rest of Greater London, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there. Contact us so our engineers can tell you what happens after that before you do anything else.

What to try now about petrol in a diesel

  • As you drive, your pump and the injectors wear. That is why you do not fire it up, and why you never believe it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel in particular — the part motorists get wrong — is that it drives away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor usually cannot run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why the ignition stays off too — turn it on and you frequently prime your system, and that's petrol exiting your tank for exactly those parts.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It leaves you a bigger tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system doesn't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that guidance assumes — so don't pour diesel on top to thin it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Sit tight if it is safe to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on High Street, anywhere — a difficult spot for us beats a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to deal with than a vehicle that never moved.
  • Before you dial, get your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting E11 2 — that's what determines whether the technician arrives or circles.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, about how much, and also if your car has fired. Those three answers decide the whole call-out.

On a forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel

Forecourts are where the work usually starts, and where a large part of it closes. If you're still at the forecourt at JET, that's usually where the drain takes place — we work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the site's permission.

Nowhere else except the forecourt can the mistake be stopped with the motor still unrun. Fuel drawn out of that tank and through your filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is fired up and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the filter and the fuel lines together with your tank. That's still not a calamity, and our technicians put it right where the car sits. What decides it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

The staff will usually help you move it away from the petrol pump so the next driver can get through. That is worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth the risk.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Wanstead

Service around Wanstead

Wanstead is a small village, and our vans are out to the town and to the areas by it on the usual journeys: Snaresbrook, Leytonstone, South Woodford, Redbridge and Aldersbrook.

If yours isn't on that list that does not mean we do not come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all towns in Greater London, and the ones listed above are simply the immediate neighbours. Near a boundary, or anywhere your satnav gets wrong? Phone and ask rather than assuming.

The ground the page includes appears on the map. Our technicians work by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of that, and the vehicle doesn't need to come to us.

Stranded on the kerbside anywhere in Wanstead?

Not everybody gets the opportunity to stop somewhere sensible. If you worked it out after setting off and ended up by the verge on Wanstead Place, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that's a routine call for us rather than an odd one.

Out of the car when it isn't safe to wait there, with it when it is. Do not start up your engine to limp the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the blend further into the system. Our van heading to a tricky spot is no bother for us, and it's a lot better for the vehicle than carrying on.

The components that should be getting oiled are grinding instead, and the motor gives no sign of that: a diesel on a diluted tank starts and moves off just fine. Risk the drive home from The Cuckfield? Don't. Call us then leave the BMW 3 Series where it is.

Don't drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst the vehicle stands, as a diesel Nissan Qashqai left outside Christchurch Green is doing none of what it did on the way there. Your pump has stopped turning.

The pump waits before the injectors, and so whatever a worn one gives off travels onward with your fuel — which is why we are firm about not driving on. Ring us, and leave your diesel Peugeot 3008 where it is by IIF Gallery.

A throttle gone soft, white smoke, an uneven idle, clattering: that is a misfilled diesel Mercedes E-Class telling you what is wrong. Do not restart the car to find a better place — switch off where you have stopped, near Wanstead United Reformed Church or anywhere else.

The fuel filter, the fuel lines, the pump and the rail: that's where the mixture is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with that tank contents. So the tank is not where most of the problem rests by this point, and a diesel Vauxhall Astra that made it close to Christ Church needs the circuit cleared instead of emptied.

Petrol in a diesel, but the motor has rolled

under a mile from Wanstead, the M11 is what matters now. A misfilled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, while the symptoms when they appear are typically lost power, an uneven idle and some smoke instead of a tidy stop.

Never start it to reposition. Pull off at the first safe junction and turn off. Long drive? Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the mixture. Say that on the phone, because it changes what goes in the van.

Where's Wanstead?

Wanstead is a locality in the London Borough of Redbridge, situated approximately 8.2 miles northeast of central London. Wanstead sits near the edge of Epping Forest, close to the neighbouring areas of Snaresbrook, Leytonstone, and South Woodford. Wanstead has a relatively low elevation of around 30 metres and is characterized by a high proportion of flat dwellings. Wanstead is a residential area with a population of around 6318 people.

Once our engineers arrive with you in Wanstead: what happens

  • The replies alter the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what got in, how much of it, and whether the engine has run.
  • Our technicians clear that tank of all the tainted mixture.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever is left later on is not the thing that created the issue.
  • Your system gets bled, on clean diesel.
  • It's fired up with clean diesel in it, and our engineers check that it's running smoothly.

That leaves it ready to set off. Long-term damage is very rare when it has been noticed quickly, and as all of it is done where the car is, it never has to go to a workshop.

AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Wanstead?

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening step is the same — do not crank it — yet this issue isn't. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the lubrication the system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Both are ours. There is a separate Wanstead page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Wanstead costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

One price would not be fair here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

  • Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the key one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much your tank holds.
  • Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the car is, and if a technician can safely reach and work on it.

Tell us your vehicle, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a clear answer rather than a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is good for that.

Petrol in diesel: common questions around Wanstead

At a petrol station in Wanstead, can you do a fuel drain there?

A large portion of this work happens there, so yes. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the site's agreement our technicians work at another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts locally routinely.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mixture sucked through it.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what takes the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it's salvageable a lot more commonly than people assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It's not a change, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate problem and it does not replace what petrol has thinned. After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Waiting next to it?

Shut off is how the car remains.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle after that. A parked, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more frequently than motorists fear.
