Washerwall: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, across Washerwall and the rest of Staffordshire. The first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. When the motor has not turned over and the fuel is still inside that tank, a tank drain is almost always all it takes, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much went in. Just one call our way is plenty: we shall tell you what comes from here. Try it first.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Don't fire it up. Fired up regardless? Then don't rely on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle usually cannot run, and so the motorist stops and the wear ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away happily, for a couple of miles. Drivers get that confused. It isn't all right — your fuel system is wearing down every mile you cover.
  • Leave the ignition be also. Diesel does two roles: it burns, and before it combusts it lubricates that high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is commonly all it takes to prime your system, which carries that petrol out of that tank and into precisely those components.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage the way that guidance implies — so don't pour diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A vehicle that has not moved is the quickest one to sort, and so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on Uplands Croft? Hazards on, then keep it there. An awkward location works for us better than a started diesel.
  • Check where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning ST9 0, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than arriving.
  • What got in, about how much, plus whether the motor has fired — these three answers decide the full job. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Quarter past eight. A fast refuel on the way in. At about eleven it occurs to you, and by then your diesel Volkswagen Golf has stood at Longton for three hours. Call us then leave the vehicle where it stands. What counts is the trip in, as diesel both burns and — before that — greases the pump and the fuel injectors, while petrol only ever ignites. Those few miles worked the pump on a fuel stripped of a great deal of its protection, and no quantity of standing in a car park gives any of it back. Hence the question about mileage instead of hours standing, and hence the instruction to leave the keys where they are till we turn up.

You'll be urged to move it clear of that gateway and fix it later. Do not. On the zig-zags by Werrington Primary School, a misfuelled Ford Kuga running on diesel is in the way, and that is all it is. Crank it three more times being polite and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes your lines, every prime draws more petrol beyond the fuel filter towards your pump. Let them complain. Call us.

Sitting still, it gets no worse. Your pump is not turning, so whatever occurred on the way to White Bar in that diesel Citroen C3 is finished happening. Time is yours. Just don't take it home on the motor to find more of it.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, left near Werrington Library. For a diesel Vauxhall Insignia whose motor has turned, that's about the best version there is. Ring us, then let the vehicle stand with the ignition alone. Short helps, truly — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the filter has had thinned fuel through it, and so has your pump. Which is why your lines get flushed and not just the tank emptied.

Purged, not cleared — that's what a diesel Skoda Superb which got as far as St Philip needs. Running a diesel puts the mixture into the fuel filter, your lines, the pump and its rail, none of which empties with your tank, so by now the tank holds the smaller part of the problem.

At a forecourt: removing petrol from the diesel

A big part of the work is done at the pump, because that is where it mostly kicks off. Our technicians work on garage forecourts regularly, with the site's permission, so if you're still at Wainwrights Coal Merchants Ltd. that is usually where this drain happens.

Before the motor has run — the forecourt is the only place this ends up halted. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from your tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a calamity, and we can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean your lines and your filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for your key.

Roll it out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they normally will. The next motorist gets through the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Cranking it to move four car lengths is not.

Parts our team cover in Washerwall

As a residential suburb, Washerwall sees a regular call, while the areas nearby go with it on that same trip: Armshead and Werrington, Ash Bank and Withystakes, Hulme.

If yours isn't on that list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are separate pages for nearly all locations across Staffordshire, and the ones named above are just the closest neighbours. Near a boundary, or somewhere your phone misreads? Call us and ask instead of assuming.

This map shows the ground this page covers. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of it is ground our technicians serve, and none of that needs your vehicle to move to us.

Broken down at the kerbside in Washerwall

Some drivers get no safe spot to pull over at all. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Marsh Close because you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call regularly enough that it's the normal kind.

Okay there? Sit by it. Not okay? Move out and away from it. Never restart the motor to nurse the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that mixture further into the system. However difficult the place, it's no bother for us to get to it, and that's far better for your car than carrying on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

The local M6 is the one which matters here, and runs under 10 miles from Washerwall. A drop in power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, instead of a neat stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the first exit that's sensible, stop there, and don't restart the vehicle to reposition. Long run? Anything approaching the under 5 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the contamination. Say that on the phone, because it affects what goes in the van.

Once our technicians reach you around Washerwall: what follows

  • Three things get checked before any price — your fuel that got in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • We clear your tank of all the polluted fuel.
  • Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever is left afterwards is not the thing that created the issue.
  • We pour new diesel in and prime the system.
  • Once it is fired up, our technicians check it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

That leaves your car ready to pull away. We do everything wherever the car has ended up, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and if it has been noticed early, it's very unusual for there to be long-term damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Washerwall is a different matter

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — your motor remains off — whereas the problem under it is a separate one altogether. Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Washerwall page. Both are ours to deal with.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Washerwall

What changes the figure is listed below, because this job isn't one job and we can't truthfully put a single price on this page.

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much that tank takes.
  • Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where your vehicle is, and if a technician can sensibly reach and work on it.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight rather than as a range. Not urgent, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel queries from Washerwall drivers

I'm on a forecourt around Washerwall. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Plenty of what we do happens nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you if we can work there. With the station's permission we work at another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts nearby routinely.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Proportion decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been drawn right through, or has it not?

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Pull over somewhere safe, turn off, and keep it off. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of your tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable far more commonly than motorists assume.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no change at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave it turned off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a distinct fault from a bygone era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces. Afterwards? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

Wherever the vehicle is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Is the car still with you?

Turned off is how the car stays.

Turn it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best place available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
