Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Washington

With that tank still holding the fuel and the engine not yet run, nearly every job needs only a drain, so leave the engine off. That result is decided in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that was put in. Across Washington and the rest of Tyne and Wear, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it stands, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. Phone and our technicians can tell you what comes after that before you do much else.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Do not crank it — and never trust it if it runs. That is the part people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor filled with diesel generally just won't run, so the person stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol generally starts, ticks over and moves off just fine for several miles. It isn't all right. It's eating into your fuel system as you drive.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it greases — your high-pressure fuel pump, those injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the ignition be as well: flicking it on is frequently all it takes to prime the system, and priming pulls petrol from the tank into just those parts.
  • That advice presumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a larger tank of the same mix. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Sit tight if it's sensible to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Dunstanburgh Close, anywhere — a difficult location for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is easier for us to sort than a motor that never shifted.
  • Check where you are before calling. A postcode that starts NE38 7, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of showing up.
  • What got in, approximately how much, and also if the engine has started — these three details settle the entire call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Petrol in a diesel BMW 3 Series, parked outside Chester-Le-Street since this morning? The wait has lost you nothing — fuel in a tank is harmless. It was the trip in that drew thinned diesel through the pump. Phone us before you move the vehicle.

How much fuel the pump has drawn is what we are really asking — not how long ago any of it was. So the phone call our engineers hope for runs like this: diesel Peugeot 308, a couple of litres of unleaded, a couple of miles driven, now shut off at Asda.

The parts that should be getting protected are wearing instead, and your car gives no sign of it: a diesel on a thinned tank fires up and moves off perfectly well. Try the trip home from The Oasis? Don't. Call us and leave the Vauxhall Astra where it stands.

Clearing the Ford Fiesta, changing your filter where there is a serviceable one, cleaning the lines, putting fresh fuel through the full circuit: that's this job, and it's shaped by the worst of it sitting in the fuel lines instead of in that tank by this point. Three things help when you ring from near The Galleries — which side the filler is on, whether our van can park alongside without blocking the road, and if your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest place we work, and so the place itself is hardly ever the trouble. A narrow parking bay trumps a vehicle driven somewhere more convenient.

Hire car? Company car? Phone them before us. Some contracts want the firm to approve the work, and that's much quicker dealt with up front than afterwards. Then phone us about the Skoda Superb, the diesel one, close to Washington Library. Don't worry that you cannot say how full your tank was — nearly no one can two days into a motor, and it's something we check there. The reason for asking: damage from petrol in a diesel is a matter of proportion. A couple of litres in an almost empty tank make a far stronger mixture than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of that, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger mixture, more knocking, more smoke, flatter throttle.

Removing petrol from your diesel at the forecourt

A large part of this work is completed at the pump, because that's where it often begins. The drain generally happens on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Sainsbury's? Given the owner's agreement, that is somewhere our engineers work, and regularly.

No place other than a forecourt can this be halted with the engine still untouched. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a disaster, and our engineers can still sort it out where it is. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as that tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for the keys.

The staff will usually happily wheel the vehicle clear of the petrol pump so the next customer can get through. That is worth doing. Starting the car over four vehicle lengths? Never.

Coverage in Washington

These same rounds get us to Town Centre, Oxclose, Washington Village, Glebe and Albany as well as Washington, which is a new town.

Not on this list? That says nothing. The names above are simply the closest few, and nearly all places across Tyne and Wear have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. On a border, or anywhere the satnav gets wrong? Ring us to ask rather than guessing.

The area this page spans sits on our map. We work roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of it, and your car does not need to travel to us.

Washington: broken down wherever you parked

The chance to pull in anywhere safe does not fall to everyone. If you noticed after setting off and ended up along the verge beside Lumley Close, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards flashing, that is a normal call for us instead of a rare one.

Okay where you are? Wait with it. Not fine? Step out and clear of it. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the trouble: fire it up to reach somewhere safer and the blend goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven. Carrying on causes your car far more harm than a technician coming out to a tricky place, and that is no bother for us.

Petrol in a diesel, but your car has moved

under a mile from Washington, the Western Highway is what counts here. Lost power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, rather than a tidy stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Never restart it to move it. Come off at the next sensible exit and turn off. It alters what our technicians bring, and so tell us when you call: on a longer drive — anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

Where is Washington?

Washington is a town situated in a riverside location within Tyne and Wear, England. It has strong historical ties to the surrounding area, having originally been part of County Durham. The town is notable for its connection to a prominent local family, whose descendants include a famous US president. Washington's setting near the river adds to its charm as a distinct town in the north east of England.

What we do when we get to you around Washington

  • Three things get checked before any price — the fuel that got in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • Out comes the contaminated fuel.
  • Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever remains after that is not the thing that caused the trouble.
  • Our technicians put fresh diesel in and bleed the fuel system.
  • It is fired up with new diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it's running properly.

Then it is ready to drive away. There's no need for a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where your car is, and when it's spotted early, long-term damage is very rare.

A different problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Washington

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — your engine stays off — whereas the fault underneath it is a different one altogether. The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which thins the diesel. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes rust and build-up.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Washington page. Both are ours to handle.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Washington

Our technicians can't put one figure on this page frankly, because the job is not one job. What changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much your tank takes.
  • Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there is sensible for a technician.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and if the engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Not time-critical, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Petrol in diesel queries from Washington motorists

I am on a forecourt around Washington. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

Plenty of what we do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there's possible.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It hinges on the ratio instead of the litres, and much more on whether your engine has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?

Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of the tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable much more often than drivers assume.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't a modification and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the car switched off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a bygone era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces. Your tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to live with it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

You, and the car, still together?

Your engine stays off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, switch off, then let the vehicle remain that way. A parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more often than motorists fear.
