Petrol in Diesel

Water End: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Do not turn on your engine. While the fuel is still inside the tank and your engine has not turned over, a tank drain is almost always all it needs — and that gets decided in the following few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they sit, all over Water End and the rest of North Yorkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. We will explain what the following part is. Ring us — this comes before anything else.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Don't crank it — and don't depend on it when it fires up. That is the thing most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine filled with diesel typically just can't run, and so the motorist stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel given petrol normally starts, ticks over and pulls away just fine for several miles. It's not all right. It is eating into the fuel system as you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only manages the one. That is why your ignition remains off too — switch it on and you commonly prime the system, and that is petrol leaving the tank for exactly those parts.
  • Don't tip diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage as that guidance presumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it simply hands you a larger tank of the same blend. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Stay put if it is sensible to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Water End, anywhere — an awkward spot for us beats a started motor, and nothing is easier for us to sort out than a motor that never shifted.
  • Before you call, work out your position. Anything nearest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode starting DL6 2 — that's what decides whether the van turns up or circles.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, approximately how many litres, and also whether the motor has fired. These three replies determine the entire job.

The high-pressure fuel pump spent that morning run running on a fluid that had lost a great deal of the protection it is built around. Diesel lubricates that pump, and the fuel injectors with it, before any of the fuel burns; petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. So imagine a diesel Renault Clio, fuelled at quarter past eight, driven in to work, and left standing outside Northallerton until it dawns on you at about eleven. Three hours of standing have altered nothing about it. The few miles before that changed a good deal, which is why the question our technicians put to you is about miles rather than hours. Phone us. Leave the car right where it sits.

We'll get to you, drain your tank, rinse the fuel lines then put new diesel in so you can get home. So if petrol went into the diesel Volkswagen Tiguan in Water End and you're stuck at Aldi with a boot packed with shopping, call us — and do not fire it up a second time to get out of that spot. A mile or so at light throttle pulls very little of it, which is why these tend to be the simple ones.

Your diesel Peugeot 3008 will have seemed perfectly usual on the way back from Brompton Community Primary School. They do, and that's the trap with petrol in a diesel rather than the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and it usually won't run, so the motorist stops and the damage stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it starts, ticks over and moves off as though nothing has happened — all the while the high-pressure pump keeps working without the lubrication the fuel is meant to be providing. Nothing tells you, since from the driver's seat there's nothing to alert you about. Phone with approximately how far you went and how hard you drove it; the second answer matters more than the first.

Nothing is getting worse while it waits. Whatever your diesel Audi A6 did on the way to Water End Green, it is doing none of it now: your pump isn't turning. So take your time — but never drive the car home to buy yourself any.

Drain it then put new diesel in — that's the tip you will get, generally from somebody confident, and it is half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Citroen C4 Picasso close to St Thomas and it would start, which is what makes the tip sound plausible. What takes place next is the issue: your engine immediately sucks the petrol still waiting in your filter and the feed lines straight back through the pump, since emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead. Our technicians flush the circuit and take the filter off where your vehicle has a working one, which is the difference between the car being fixed and your car only starting.

On a forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel

Much of this job begins at the pump, meaning a good chunk of that ends up finished on site. The drain normally takes place right there. Still on the forecourt at Texaco? Given the owner's consent, that's somewhere we work, and regularly.

Before the motor has run — a forecourt is the one setting the mistake is caught. Our engineers can still sort it out where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been switched on and moved there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a disaster, although the flush then has to reach past that tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the key are what settle that.

Out from the petrol pump, the next driver can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you move the vehicle. Worth it. Firing the car just to move four car lengths is not.

Water End and the villages beside it

Those same runs carry us to Brompton, Winton, Bullamoor, Northallerton and Oaktree Hill besides Water End, which is a residential suburb.

We still come. The places above are just the closest neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of towns in North Yorkshire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Presuming is the mistake to resist, especially on a boundary or somewhere a satnav struggles. Contact us to enquire.

The ground this page includes sits on this map. Every bit of it is ground our engineers serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You don't bring the car anywhere.

Stranded at the roadside in Water End

Some people find no safe spot to stop at all. Set off, then realised? Ended up along the verge beside Little Lane, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards going? That is a routine call here. Not a rare one.

Remain with your car when it's sensible to wait inside, yet out of the vehicle if it is not. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the problem: start it up to reach somewhere safer and the blend goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered. However difficult the location, it is no problem for us to get to it, and that is much better for the vehicle than carrying on.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

under 10 miles from Water End, the A1(M) is what counts now. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a clean stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Get off at the first safe junction, turn off, and never restart the car to reposition. Long run? Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the contamination. Say that on the phone, because it affects what goes in our van.

All about Water End

Water End is a small suburban area situated on the riverside in North Yorkshire, with a mix of terraced housing and a population of around 516 residents. Water End sits at an elevation of 48 metres, close to nearby places such as Brompton, Winton, and Bullamoor. Water End is located near the city of Ripon, which is approximately 16 miles away. Water End is also relatively distant from London, at a distance of around 204 miles.

What our engineers do when our technicians get to you in Water End

  • The responses alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what went in, how much of it, and whether the motor has run.
  • Away goes the contaminated mixture.
  • Our engineers rinse the fuel lines and clear the fuel filter, so what is left in your system is not what created the problem.
  • Priming follows, once new diesel is in.
  • We fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel.

After that it is ready to pull away. All of it is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been spotted early, lasting damage is very rare.

A distinct job: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Water End

Don't start it: that first instruction applies whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this fault itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the lubrication your fuel system depends on. Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Water End page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Water End

Truthfully, no single number fits on a page like this. This job differs. Here's what moves it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, weighed against how much that tank takes.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the vehicle is, and if a van can safely reach and work on it.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear rather than as a range. If it is not time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Water End drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

I'm on a forecourt around Water End. Can you drain the vehicle here?

Much of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you if we can work there. With the owner's consent our technicians visit Asda and the other forecourts locally all the time.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been drawn right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what moves the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's salvageable far more commonly than drivers expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It isn't an alteration, and so a drain then flush carried out properly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a different fault from a bygone era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores. Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Waiting next to it?

Do not turn your engine back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle later on. A parked, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more commonly than people assume.
