Petrol in Diesel

Waterloo: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Never turn on your engine. If the petrol is still sitting in that tank and your engine has not yet run, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires — and that is decided in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they are, throughout Waterloo and the remainder of Merseyside, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Phone before all else happens, and you will learn what comes from there.

What to do first about petrol in a diesel

  • While you drive, your pump and your injectors suffer. That's why you don't fire it up, and why you don't believe it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel especially — the part motorists get wrong — is that it drives off happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine usually cannot run at all, which stops the driver and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. That is why your ignition remains off too — flick it on and you commonly prime your system, and that's petrol leaving that tank for exactly those components.
  • Don't dilute it. Diesel added on top gets rid of nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • Our team would sooner drive to an odd place than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay still. Nothing is easier to deal with than a motor that has not shifted. On the verge on Oxford Road, that means hazards on then leave the car.
  • Our van showing up instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode beginning L22 5, and whatever is closest to you with a label on it. Get both prepared before you phone.
  • What got in, approximately how much, and whether your car has run — these three answers settle your whole call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

On the forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel

The job kicks off at a pump, usually. Quite often the work wraps up at one too. If you are still on the forecourt at Shell, that's generally where this drain happens — our technicians work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the station's consent.

No place other than a garage can this be halted with the motor still unrun. Our engineers can still put it right where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been switched on and driven there, and that pulled fuel through the filter then into your high-pressure pump, right from your tank. None of that is a calamity, though the flush then has to reach past your tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for your key are what decide that.

Attendants will normally chip in pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get by. Take the assistance. Moving it four bays doesn't warrant firing it.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Waterloo

Every start primes your fuel system and draws more of the mix out of your tank and on to your pump — which is why a motor moved twice into a better space has silently turned into a worse job than one left exactly where it stopped. So where our engineers cannot work beside your diesel Renault Clio, we roll the vehicle without starting it. None of that is pedantry about a couple of seconds of running. Car parks like the one outside Co-op our engineers work in often, and the fuel is hardly ever the complicated part: that bay is. Vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, occasionally a height barrier at the entrance settling whether a technician reaches you at all. Tell us how boxed in you are, and which way your car faces.

A diesel pump delivers fuel to demand, and a rushed morning drive needs plenty — so three miles in your Peugeot 308 seems like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine at the gates of St John's Church of England Primary School, already late, the receipt in your hand reading unleaded: hazards on, ignition off, ring us.

Chance the journey home from The Volunteer Canteen? Not a chance. It will start and it will drive off perfectly well, which is the trouble — a diesel on a thinned tank behaves usually whilst wearing down the parts the fuel should be protecting. Park the Nissan Qashqai and call us.

Hire car? Company car? Phone them before us. Some agreements want the firm to sign off the work, and that's much quicker dealt with up front than afterwards. Then ring us about the Audi Q5, the diesel one, by St Edmund Of Canterbury Church. Do not worry that you can't say how full your tank was — almost no one can two days into a motor, and it is something our engineers establish on site. The reason for asking: damage from petrol in a diesel is a matter of proportion. A couple of litres in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mix than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of it, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger blend, more rattling, more smoke, flatter throttle.

No dashboard light exists for this, which is why cars in that position generally get driven again before anyone rings. Do not be one of them. The throttle went limp and your idle turned uneven after a couple of streets, and your diesel Seat Leon is now resting by Plaza. Deadness there means fuel that can't build pressure properly rather than a motor giving up. Switch off. Call us.

Areas we serve near Waterloo

Being a residential suburb, Waterloo sees a routine visit, whilst the areas close by go with it on the same round: Crosby and Waterloo Park, Seaforth and Brighton le Sands, Great Crosby.

If yours is not on the list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are separate pages for the majority of towns across Merseyside, and the ones mentioned above are simply the nearest neighbours. Near the boundary, or somewhere the satnav misreads? Call us and check rather than assuming.

That map marks the patch this page includes. Every bit of it is territory our engineers cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You don't drive the vehicle anywhere.

Kerbside breakdowns around Waterloo

The chance to stop somewhere safe does not come to everybody. Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Mount Pleasant as you worked it out after setting off — our engineers take that call regularly enough that it is the ordinary kind.

Stay by the car while it's wise to sit inside, but out of the vehicle if it is not. Don't start up your motor to limp the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the mix further into your fuel system. We will send the van to an inconvenient spot without any bother, and for the car that is far better than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the car has gone

This is where the M57 comes into it — under 5 miles from Waterloo. A misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they arrive are normally a loss of power, an uneven idle and some smoke rather than a clean stop.

Come off at the next safe junction, turn off, and don't start the car to move it. Assume the worst of it on a long run. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Tell us when you ring. What we bring differs.

Where's Waterloo?

Waterloo is a suburban area in Merseyside, situated on the coast of the Irish Sea, with Waterloo Park providing a green space for residents. Waterloo has a mix of housing types, but terraced houses are predominant, reflecting the area's historical development. Waterloo is located near the towns of Crosby and Seaforth, and is approximately 5 miles from Liverpool. Waterloo sits at a low elevation of around 14 metres above sea level, close to the shoreline.

What comes next when our technicians reach you around Waterloo

  • We ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has your motor run? Those answers alter what the work really is.
  • The tainted mixture is pulled out of your tank.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.
  • We put fresh diesel in and bleed the fuel system.
  • The engine is turned on and tested to make sure it runs properly on clean diesel.

After that it's ready to drive away. Our technicians do everything wherever your car has stopped, which means it never needs to go to a workshop, and if it has been spotted quickly, it is very unusual for there to be lasting damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Waterloo is a separate matter

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening instruction is unchanged — don't fire it up — but this issue is not. The lubrication a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Waterloo page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Waterloo?

Our technicians can't put one price on this page honestly, because the job isn't one job. What changes it:

  • This is the key one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that ratio.
  • The sort of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's sensible for a technician.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run. Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Waterloo drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

Fuel drains on a Waterloo petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a fair share of this work happens. Often, provided the site consents: Texaco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that spot is something our technicians answer straight away.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It rests on the proportion instead of the litres, and far more on whether the engine has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is if that mixture has been pulled through your fuel system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of the tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable a lot more commonly than motorists expect.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no modification at all. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has weakened is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate problem. So no. Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Still with the vehicle?

Shut off is the way the car remains.

Switch it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.

Emptying wrongly fuelled motors, Waterloo and the rest of Merseyside, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
