Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Waterloo? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Waterloo and the rest of Norfolk. The first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. When the motor has not been started and the fuel is still in that tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes, and the coming few minutes decide that, not how much was put in. We can show you what the following step will be. Ring us — it goes ahead of all else.

What to do next about petrol in a diesel

  • Whenever you drive, your pump and your injectors wear. That's why you don't start the car, and why you do not rely on it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel in particular — the point most people get wrong — is that it drives off fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally can't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the damage with them. This one lets you keep going.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it combusts it greases — the high-pressure pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the ignition alone also: switching it on is often sufficient to prime your system, and priming pulls petrol from your tank into exactly those parts.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It will not. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you get is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • A vehicle that has never shifted is the quickest one to sort, and so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on Yew Tree Court? Hazards on, and keep it there. A difficult location suits us better than a started motor.
  • A van arriving rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode that starts IP21 4, and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it. Keep both ready before you call.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, about how much, and also if the car has fired. Those three answers shape your whole call-out.

Your high-pressure pump did that morning commute running on a fuel that had shed much of the protection it is made for. Diesel lubricates that pump, and the injectors with it, before any of your fuel ignites; petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. So picture a diesel Volkswagen Golf, topped up at quarter past eight, driven in to work, and parked sitting at Diss till you realise somewhere around eleven. Three hours of sitting have changed nothing about it. The couple of miles before that did a good deal, which is why the question our technicians ask is about miles instead of time. Call us. Leave it exactly where it stands.

Your diesel Skoda Octavia will have felt perfectly ordinary on the way back from Scole Church of England Primary Academy. They always do, and that's the trap with petrol in a diesel instead of the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol motor and it usually won't run, and so the motorist stops and the harm stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it starts, ticks over and moves off as though nothing has happened — meanwhile the high-pressure pump keeps working without the protection the fuel is meant to be providing. Nothing alerts you, since from behind the wheel there is nothing to alert you about. Phone us with roughly how far you drove and how hard you worked it; the second one matters more than the first.

Straightforward job, this one — until somebody takes it home. A diesel BMW 3 Series parked at The Crossways Inn with petrol in that tank loses nothing by sitting there overnight, so park it then phone once it is light. Expect a query about that drive there, though. Brief and chilly is exactly where petrol fails to burn, and what won't burn can slip past the rings and into the oil.

Your pump sits before the injectors, and so whatever a worn one gives off passes downstream with the fuel — which is why we're direct about not driving on. Ring us, then leave your diesel Mercedes C-Class where it is close to Scole Village Sign.

By this point your tank is not where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, the mix is in the fuel filter, the lines, the pump and its rail — and it doesn't come back out with your tank contents. A diesel Audi Q5 that made it close to Dragon needs your system purged, not cleared.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Waterloo

Removing petrol from a diesel at the forecourt

Pumps are where the work mostly begins, and where a fair part of that closes. If you're still at the forecourt at BP, that is normally where the drain takes place — we operate on garage forecourts regularly, with the station's permission.

At a forecourt, it is stopped with the engine never started, and no place else manages it. Our technicians can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and moved there, and that drew fuel through your filter then into the high-pressure pump, right from the tank. None of that is a catastrophe, although the flush then has to go past that tank to your lines and your filter, and the few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the key are what determine that.

Clear of the petrol pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the staff help you wheel it. Well worth it. Firing the car to roll four car lengths isn't.

Service near Waterloo

Being a village, Waterloo has a frequent call, whilst the areas close by go along on that same trip: Scole and Scole Common, Billingford and Stuston, Frenze.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all locations across Norfolk, and the ones mentioned above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off the list says nothing whatsoever about whether our engineers come. Call us to enquire instead of presuming, especially if you are on the boundary or anywhere a satnav struggles with.

That map shows the area this page covers. The lot is territory our technicians cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never drive your vehicle anywhere.

Stranded on the kerbside in Waterloo

Not everyone gets a chance to stop anywhere safe. If you worked it out after setting off and finished up along the verge beside Diss Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards going, that's a common call for us rather than a rare one.

Clear of the motor if it is not safe to be inside, by it if it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that blend further into the system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better. Carrying on causes the car far more harm than our van driving out to an inconvenient place, and that is no trouble for us.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

under 50 miles out of Waterloo, your M11 is what matters here. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will often do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power ebbs away, the idle gets uneven, and there may be smoke.

Take the next exit that is sensible, stop there, and never restart the car to reposition. On a longer drive — anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city — take it the contamination has been through the filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you ring. It changes what our engineers bring.

Waterloo itself

Waterloo is a small village in Norfolk, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 29 metres. Waterloo sits near the market town of Scole and the village of Billingford, with the city of Norwich located 19 miles to the north. Waterloo has a population of around 781 people, predominantly living in detached houses. Waterloo is located in the Eastern region of England, approximately 80 miles from London.

Once our engineers reach you in Waterloo: what we do

  • The replies shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of it, and if the engine has run.
  • Out goes the tainted fuel.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • The motor is turned on and tested to make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

From that point, you are ready to drive away. Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been caught soon, and because all of it is done where your car is, it never has to go to a garage.

A separate matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Waterloo

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first instruction is the same — do not start the car — but the problem is not. Thinned diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Our technicians cover both, and AdBlue removal around Waterloo has its own page with the full story — including why it is usually the more significant of the two.

Waterloo pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Truthfully, no single number belongs on a page like this. This job differs. Here's what moves it:

  • This is the main one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that ratio.
  • Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether our van can sensibly reach your vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where your vehicle is.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range. For your car at home that is going nowhere and is not urgent, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: common questions in Waterloo

I'm on a forecourt around Waterloo. Can you drain it here?

Yes — forecourts are where a big share of this happens. Regularly, provided the site agrees: Gulf Oil, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something our engineers answer there and then.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

It depends on the ratio instead of the litres, and far more on whether the engine has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mixture drawn through it.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. It's salvageable a lot more frequently than people fear, even though driving is what takes the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has diluted isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different fault. So no. Afterwards? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, as our technicians drain and flush your car wherever it is.

Is the car still with you?

Leave the car switched off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle after that. This is recoverable from much more frequently than motorists assume, and a stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in.

Call-out fuel draining around Waterloo and throughout Norfolk — at the roadside, on the forecourt or at home.
