Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Watton? Don't Start It
Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, all over Watton and the remainder of Dorset. The first thing to do is not to start the engine. While the engine has not been started and the petrol is still sitting in your tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. Call us and we shall explain what happens after that before you attempt any more.
What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order
- Never crank it — and never believe it when it fires up. This is the part people get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor given diesel generally just cannot run, so the driver stops and the wear ends with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, ticks over and drives away perfectly well for several miles. It's not okay. It's eating into the fuel system as you drive.
- Diesel burns, and before it ignites it greases — that high-pressure pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the ignition be too: flicking it on is commonly all it takes to prime that system, and priming carries petrol from the tank into just those components.
- Do not add diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice implies, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it only hands you a larger tank of the same mixture. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
- We'd rather travel to an odd spot than have it started — so if you safely can, sit tight. Nothing is simpler to deal with than a car that has not shifted. On the verge on Watton Lane, that means hazards on then leave the car.
- Check where you are before calling. A postcode beginning DT6 5, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of showing up.
- Three details decide the whole job: the stuff you tipped in, the ballpark measure involved, and whether anything has been running since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.
At the forecourt: removing petrol from a diesel
A good portion of this job is done at a pump, because that is where it often begins. If you're still on the forecourt at Morrisons, that's usually where the drain takes place — we operate on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement.
Before the motor has run — a forecourt is the one place it gets spotted. Our technicians can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and moved there, and that sucked fuel through the filter then into your high-pressure pump, right from the tank. None of that is a calamity, though the flush then has to reach past that tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for your key are what decide that.
The staff will usually offer to roll the car out from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get past. That's worth doing. Firing the car to shift four car lengths isn't.
Tell us this much and our engineers can work with it: a diesel Volkswagen Tiguan, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, turned off outside Morrisons now. Time passed is not the thing we need. Fuel sucked by the pump is.
Twenty to nine outside Bridport, St Mary's Church of England Primary School, running late, and the receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Hazards on, ignition off, ring us. Three miles in the Skoda Octavia seems like nothing, but a diesel pump supplies fuel on demand — while a hurried morning dash demands plenty.
It will start. It will pull away quite happily. That is the trouble, since a diesel on a thinned tank acts generally while grinding the parts its fuel should be protecting. So no, never try the journey home from Martin's Bar and Restaurant — leave the Nissan Qashqai then ring us.
Out there happy, back gutless. If that was the drive to St. Mary's Playing Field, look at the tank. Diesel gets diluted by petrol, and thin fuel leaks past the tight gaps meant to build injection pressure — so every extra mile your diesel Peugeot 3008 covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere safe, turn off, ring us.
Three things help when you phone from close to Bridport Leisure Centre: which side the filler is on, whether our van can park alongside without blocking the road, and if the motor has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest place our technicians work, so the place itself is rarely the trouble — we'd much rather deal with a tight parking spot than with a motor that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We will drain your Audi A3, change your filter where there's a workable one, flush your lines and put clean fuel through the entire circuit, as by this point the worst of it is waiting in the fuel lines instead of in that tank.
Watton plus the places near it
As a residential suburb, Watton sees a routine call, while the places close by come with it on the same trip: Skilling and New Zealand, Bridport and Lower Eype, Allington.
If yours isn't on this list that does not mean we never come — there are pages for most locations in Dorset, and the ones named above are just the immediate neighbours. Assuming is the thing to skip, particularly on the border or somewhere your phone struggles. Ring us to enquire.
The ground this page includes appears on the map. Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: the lot is ground our technicians work on, and none of it asks your vehicle to travel to us.
Stopped at the kerbside anywhere in Watton?
Not everyone finds a safe spot to pull in. A common call for us instead of a rare one: worked out after setting off, finished up by the verge on Broad Lane or in a lay-by with the hazards going.
Sit with the motor if it is safe to wait there, yet clear of it if it isn't. Do not restart the engine to limp the car somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the mix further into the system. A technician heading to a difficult location is no bother for us, and it is far better for your car than pressing on.
Driven it already? Pull over, then check this
under 25 miles out of Watton, your M5 is what matters here. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power falls away, your idle goes rough, and there may be smoke.
Don't restart it to reposition. Get off at the next safe exit then switch off. It affects what we bring, and so say so when you phone: on a longer drive — anything near the under 50 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and your injectors.
Watton itself
Watton is a small suburban area in Dorset, situated near the coast and close to the town of Bridport. Watton sits at an elevation of 46 metres, with its predominant housing being flats, and is home to a population of around 1302 residents. Watton is located near other nearby places such as Skilling and Bridport, and is within driving distance to the city of Exeter, which is approximately 33 miles away.
What follows when our engineers reach you around Watton
- The responses alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what got in, how much of that, and if the engine has run.
- That tank is emptied of everything.
- What is remaining in the system should not be what started the trouble, and so the fuel lines get cleaned and your filter cleared.
- The fuel system gets primed, on clean diesel.
- It's run with clean diesel in it, and our engineers check that it's running properly.
That has your car ready to pull away. All of it is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been noticed early, long-term damage is very unusual.
AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in Watton?
If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening instruction is the same — don't start the car — yet the problem is not. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.
Both are ours. There's a separate Watton page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.
What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Watton
One price would not be honest here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:
- Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the key one.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.
- Whether our van can sensibly reach your vehicle and work on it, which depends on where your car is.
Tell us your car, the amount and whether it has run, and you'll get a clear answer instead of a range. Not urgent, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.
Petrol in diesel: frequent questions around Watton
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Watton?
Much of what we do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Often, provided the site agrees: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that place is something we answer there and then.
Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?
It hinges on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether your motor has run. What decides how much work is required is if that mix has been pulled through the system — because although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one, either way that is the query.
Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?
Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving takes the problem along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly helpful thing left to you isn't restarting the car.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
No. Carried out correctly, draining and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct problem and it doesn't replace what petrol has thinned. Your tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to live with it.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
You don't need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.
Waiting next to it?
Keep the car switched off.
If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off then keep it off. This is recoverable from far more commonly than motorists fear, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
Throughout Dorset and in Watton: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
