Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Waunfawr? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, throughout Waunfawr and the rest of Gwynedd. The first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. While the engine has not yet run and the fuel is still in that tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much went in. We will tell you what your next move is. Contact us — this goes ahead of anything else.

The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Do not crank it. Started all the same? Then do not rely on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle normally will not run, and so the person stops and the wear halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off normally, for several miles. Most people get that reversed. It isn't okay — that fuel system is wearing down every mile you cover.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors protected. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why the ignition stays off too — flick it on and you often prime your system, and that is petrol exiting that tank for precisely those components.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage in the way that guidance implies — so never pour diesel on top to water down it. Octane is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Remain where you are if you reasonably can. A motor that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to sort out, and we'd much rather drive to an odd place than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Bryn Goleu, turn the hazards on and leave the car there.
  • A van turning up instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode that starts LL55 4, and whatever is closest to you with a label on it. Keep both prepared before you phone.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three queries — what was put in, approximately how many litres, plus whether the engine has been run. Your replies settle whatever comes after.

How many miles you drove is what we query, not how long your car has been sitting — and this is why. Diesel does two tasks on its way through the engine: it burns, and before burning it greases that high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first only. So a fast fill on the road in, it dawning on you close to eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Passat standing at Llanfairpwll since quarter past eight shows those couple of miles were travelled with the pump running on a fuel robbed of most of its protection. Phone us then keep the vehicle exactly where it stands.

Tell us this much and our engineers can work with it: a diesel Nissan Qashqai, a couple of litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, switched off at Tesco now. Time passed isn't the thing our technicians need. Fuel sucked by the pump is.

Straightforward job, this one — until someone drives it home. A diesel Mercedes C-Class sitting outside Snowdonia Parc with petrol in that tank loses nothing by standing there overnight, so park the vehicle and ring us once it's light. Expect a query about that run there, though. Short and chilly is precisely where petrol battles to burn, and what will not burn can slip past the rings and into the sump.

Never drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse while the vehicle sits, because a diesel Peugeot 3008 parked at Y Bicell is doing none of what it did on the way there. The pump has stopped turning.

Ringing from near Former ROC Nuclear Monitoring Post 1959-69? Three things help us. The filler — which side of your car it's on. Room for a van alongside you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The spot itself barely counts: on-street is where we work most, and we'd much rather have a cramped bay than a motor somebody has driven somewhere easier. Then it's a drain for the BMW 1 Series, a filter change where there's one worth changing, lines purged, clean fuel put round the entire system. By now the worst of that is in the fuel lines and not that tank.

Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

A large chunk of this job is completed at a pump, as that's where it mostly starts. Still at Shell? Then that's typically where it gets done. Station forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the owner.

A forecourt is the only setting it can be spotted before the engine has run. The few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the keys decide how much requires flushing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as the tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still put it right where your car stands.

Staff will usually pitch in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get past. Welcome the assistance. Firing the car just to roll four car lengths is not.

Service near Waunfawr

Croesywaun, Groeslon, Ceunant, Betws Garmon, Tan-y-coed — all of those on the rounds that take us across to Waunfawr itself, a village.

Not on this list? It says nothing. The names above are simply the closest few, and most places across Gwynedd have a page of their own somewhere on this site. Assuming is the thing to resist, above all on the boundary or somewhere the satnav fails. Contact us and check.

That map is the area this page includes. We work at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of that, and the car does not need to travel to us.

Roadside stops around Waunfawr

Not everyone gets a safe spot to pull in. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Bro Waun as you realised after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it is the ordinary kind.

Out of the car when it is not sensible to wait in it, with it when it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the blend further into your fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. We will bring the van to an inconvenient place without any fuss, and for your car that is much better than driving on.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

Here is where your Moreton Spur matters, under 50 miles out of Waunfawr. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power falls away, your idle turns rough, and there may be some smoke.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. On a longer run — anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the injectors, and mention it when you phone. It affects what we bring.

Waunfawr itself

Waunfawr is a small village in Gwynedd, situated on the banks of a river at an elevation of 153 metres. Waunfawr lies near the villages of Croesywaun, Groeslon, and Ceunant, and is approximately 8.7 miles from Bangor. Waunfawr has a population of around 654 people, predominantly living in semi-detached houses. Waunfawr is located in northwest Wales, about 204.9 miles from London.

What our technicians do when our technicians reach you around Waunfawr

  • The answers shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what went in, how much of that, and if the motor has run.
  • We clear the tank of all the polluted mixture.
  • What is remaining in your system shouldn't be what started the problem, and so the lines get rinsed and the filter cleaned.
  • We pour clean diesel in and bleed your system.
  • The engine is turned on and checked to make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

From there, you're ready to set off. Long-term damage is very uncommon when it has been caught quickly, and since everything is done where your car is, it never needs to go to a garage.

A separate job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Waunfawr

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — the motor remains off — while the issue beneath it's a separate one altogether. Thinned diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and build-up in its place.

Both are ours. There is a separate Waunfawr page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Waunfawr?

Frankly, no single price belongs on a page like this. The job changes. Here is what varies it:

  • This is the key one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much the tank can hold.
  • The type of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there sensibly?

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range. For your car at home that's going nowhere and is not urgent, works too.

Petrol in diesel: common questions in Waunfawr

Fuel drains on a Waunfawr petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a fair portion of this work takes place. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Essar is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there's possible.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether your motor has run counts a lot more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been drawn through the system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What now?

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. It is salvageable far more frequently than motorists fear, even though driving is what moves the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It is not a change, and so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave it turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has thinned is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a separate problem. So no. Your pump still has to live with it, because your tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You do not need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Keep the car shut off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle afterwards. Cold and parked, a motor is in the best position available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
