Petrol in Diesel

Wellbank: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, across Wellbank and the rest of Angus. The first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. When the motor has not yet been started and the petrol is still sitting in your tank, a tank drain is almost always all it requires, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. Contact us and then our technicians will explain what happens next before you try any more.

The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • While you drive, your pump and the injectors wear down. This is why you never crank it, and why you don't depend on it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel in particular — the bit people get wrong — is that it pulls away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally will not run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Leave your ignition off as well. Diesel does two tasks: it combusts, and before it burns it lubricates the high-pressure pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is often sufficient to prime the system, which pulls this petrol out of that tank and into precisely those components.
  • That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you get is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A motor that has never shifted is the simplest one to handle, and we would much rather drive to a difficult place than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Elm Street, put those hazards on and leave the car there.
  • Keep your location prepared before you ring. A postcode beginning DD8 4 and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it is the difference between a van turning up and a van circling.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, approximately how much, and also whether the motor has fired. These three facts decide the entire job.

Quarter past eight, a quick fill-up on the road in, and you realise around eleven — by that point your diesel Volkswagen Passat has been parked outside the nearest station for three hours. Ring us and keep the vehicle exactly where it sits. The run in is the bit that matters most, as diesel has two jobs on its way through an engine: it ignites, and before it combusts it greases its high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. So those few miles were covered with your pump working on a fluid that had given up most of the protection it is designed around — which is why the question our technicians ask is how many miles you went, not how long your motor has been sitting.

Car parks like the one at Co-op Food are a place we visit frequently, and the fuel is seldom the complicated part. The bay is: motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height limit on the way in that decides if a technician can access you at all. So tell us how hemmed in you are when you call, and which way the vehicle is pointing. If our technicians cannot work beside the diesel Renault Clio we'll roll the vehicle without running it — and that's not fussiness about a couple of seconds of running. Each start primes the fuel system and pulls more of that mix out of the tank and on to the pump, so a vehicle moved twice into a roomier space has silently become a harder job than one left precisely where it stopped.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: the fuel has to hold pressure, not only burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built escapes past gaps instead, leaving the engine a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was designed around. Petrol dilutes diesel, and diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the precision parts it passes through — that is the entire process. It explains the normal Tick Tock's Garden call too: a diesel Peugeot 208 that drove out without complaint and came back down on power, uneven at idle, maybe smoking a little. None of which is the engine failing, and that is the part worth hearing. Your fuel has stopped behaving like diesel. Put the fuel right and it stops.

The narrower petrol nozzle goes into a newer diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical instead of slapdash. Unfamiliar locations see most of that for that reason. So: topped up near J M Barrie's Birthplace without thinking, in a diesel Kia Sportage you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anybody spots it, and distance decides how much petrol ends up at the fuel injectors.

Put right and starting aren't the same thing, and the difference is the circuit: our engineers flush it, and take the filter off where there is a workable one. Compare that with the certain suggestion you'll get — drain the car, refill with clean diesel. Half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Audi Q5 close to Gallery 128 and it will start, which is precisely why the suggestion sounds plausible. Then the engine draws the petrol left behind in your filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through the pump, as draining a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Ring us instead.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Wellbank

Can petrol be drained out of a diesel at a forecourt?

A big part of the work gets done at a pump, because that is where it often begins. We operate on garage forecourts regularly, with the station's permission, so if you are still at Autosales that's usually where this drain gets done.

Before the engine has fired — the forecourt is the single place this is halted. The few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for your key determine how much requires rinsing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the filter need cleaning as well as your tank. It is not a disaster, and our engineers can still sort it out where the car sits.

Wheel the car out of the way if the staff offer, and they usually will. The next driver gets past the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Cranking the car over four vehicle lengths? Don't.

Areas our vans reach around Wellbank

Wellbank is a residential suburb, so our technicians are out to it and to anywhere by it on the usual rounds: Kirriemuir, Tillyloss, Maryton, Northmuir and Southmuir.

We still come. The names above are just the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all towns around Angus, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. Contact us to enquire instead of assuming, especially when you are on the border or anywhere a satnav misreads.

This map shows the patch this page spans. We work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of that, and the car does not need to move to us.

Stopped at the kerb somewhere in Wellbank?

Not everybody gets the chance to pull in anywhere suitable. A normal call for us instead of a rare one: noticed after setting off, landed by the verge of Elm Road or in a lay-by with the hazard lights flashing.

Out of the vehicle while it is not sensible to be inside, beside it if it is. Do not start it up to reach a nicer spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that mixture deeper into the system. We'll bring the van to a tricky spot without any fuss, and for the vehicle that is much better than carrying on.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

The local M90 is the one which matters here, and runs under 50 miles from Wellbank. Lost power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, rather than a neat stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Get off at the next sensible junction, turn off, and do not start the car to move it. Assume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything close to the under 25 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Tell us when you phone. What our technicians bring changes.

Wellbank itself

Wellbank is a suburban area situated on the riverside in Angus, Scotland, with a mix of flat housing and local amenities. Wellbank sits at an elevation of 133 metres, approximately 15 miles from Dundee, and is close to nearby places such as Kirriemuir and Maryton. Wellbank is part of a wider residential area that has developed along the river, providing a commuter base for nearby cities.

The visit around Wellbank, step by step

  • Our technicians ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has the engine run? Those answers shape what the work really is.
  • That tank gets emptied completely.
  • Fuel lines are purged through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.
  • The system gets primed, on clean diesel.
  • Once it's fired up, our engineers make sure it runs properly on new diesel.

That has it ready to pull away. There's no need to go to a garage at any point, because the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's spotted early, long-term damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around Wellbank?

The issue is not the same, though the opening step is — don't crank it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. The protection a fuel system depends on gets taken away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Wellbank page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Wellbank?

Our engineers cannot put one number on this page frankly, as the job isn't one job. What shifts it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
  • Where your car is, and whether a technician can sensibly reach and work on it.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm and not as a range. If it isn't pressing — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Wellbank drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

At a petrol station around Wellbank, can you do a fuel drain there?

Much of what we do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Routinely, provided the site agrees: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that location is something our technicians answer on the spot.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the measure. Proportion is, and far more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been drawn right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Driving is what takes the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it's salvageable much more frequently than drivers assume, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and purging is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a different fault from a different era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind puts back. Later? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

Standing next to it?

Never turn the engine on again.

Turn it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and stationary, a car is in the best position available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
