Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Wellington

If you have not turned on the motor yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is almost always what a motor needs while the petrol is still in your tank and your engine has not been started, which is why it is the coming few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the vehicle wherever it has stopped in Wellington or the rest of Somerset, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there. Call us and then we can tell you what happens next before you do any more.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

  • Don't crank it. Turned on regardless? Then don't trust it. Diesel in a petrol motor normally cannot run, and so the motorist stops and the harm stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off fine, for a couple of miles. Motorists get that reversed. It isn't fine — your fuel system is wearing down every mile you do.
  • Leave the ignition off as well. Diesel has two roles: it burns, and before it ignites it protects your injection pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Flicking the ignition on is frequently enough to prime your system, which carries the petrol out of that tank then into just those components.
  • Topping up takes out nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system doesn't cope with petrol by percentage as that advice assumes — so do not put diesel on top to weaken it. Octane is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay still if it's sensible to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on High Street, anywhere — a tricky spot for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is quicker for us to sort than a car that never shifted.
  • Know where you are before ringing. A postcode that starts TA21 8, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of arriving.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Let us know what went in, approximately how many litres, and whether the motor has fired. These three facts decide the whole call-out.

The high-pressure pump spent that morning commute running on a fuel that had given up much of the protection it is built around. Diesel lubricates that pump, and the fuel injectors with it, before any of the fuel ignites; petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. So imagine a diesel Renault Megane, fuelled at quarter past eight, driven in to work, and parked sitting outside Taunton until you realise close to eleven. Three hours of sitting have altered nothing about it. The couple of miles before that did a good deal, which is why the thing our engineers ask you is about distance instead of hours. Phone. Leave the vehicle exactly where it sits.

How much fuel your pump has sucked is what we're really asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the enquiry we want goes like this: diesel Peugeot 308, a few litres of unleaded, a couple of miles driven, now turned off outside Asda.

Twenty to nine by Beech Grove Primary School, running late, and the receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Hazards on, motor off, ring us. Three miles in the Nissan Qashqai feels like nothing, but a diesel pump delivers fuel to demand — and a rushed morning run asks for plenty.

Don't drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst your car sits, because a diesel Mercedes E-Class left outside Wellington Tennis Club is doing none of what it did on the way there. The pump has stopped turning.

No warning exists for this, which is why cars in that position typically get driven once more before somebody phones. Don't be one of them. The throttle went limp and your idle turned ragged after a few streets, and your diesel Skoda Superb is now resting near Wellington Community Centre. Softness there means fuel that can't build pressure fully instead of a motor giving up. Switch off. Phone us.

Can petrol be taken out of your diesel on the forecourt?

Plenty of this work begins at a forecourt, so a good share of it gets done there. Still at Esso? Then that's usually where it takes place. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the station.

Nowhere else other than the forecourt can the mistake be spotted with your motor still unstarted. Fuel drawn out of that tank and through your filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when your engine is fired up and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and the fuel lines along with your tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and our engineers sort it out where your car stands. What settles it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the receipt was read.

The attendants will normally help you roll it away from the petrol pump so the next driver can get by. It is worth doing. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a restart.

Parts our team reach in Wellington

As a town, Wellington sees a steady call, and the places close by come along on the same trip: Tonedale and Rockwell Green, Poole and Chelston, Tone.

We do come. Those names above are merely the closest neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all places across Somerset, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Phone to enquire instead of presuming, particularly where you are on the border or anywhere your satnav can't find.

The area this page spans sits on this map. The lot is ground we work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never move the vehicle anywhere.

Wellington: stranded where you parked

Not everybody gets a chance to pull in somewhere sensible. Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of South Street because you noticed after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it is the usual kind.

Whether you remain with the vehicle or stand away from it hangs on whether staying in it feels sensible. Do not start it up to reach a better location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mixture deeper into the system. We'll bring our van to a tricky place without any fuss, and for your car that is far better than pressing on.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

The M5 is the road which counts now, and lies under 3 miles from Wellington. Lost power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a neat stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

The first safe exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. Presume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Say so when you call. What we bring alters.

Where is Wellington?

Wellington is a town in Somerset, situated inland at an elevation of 82 metres, with a mix of semi-detached housing and other residential properties. Wellington lies near the towns of Tonedale and Rockwell Green, and is also close to Poole, in the South West region of England. Wellington is located 22 miles from Exeter and 139 miles from London, making it a commuter town with a population of around 14321 people. Wellington has a range of local amenities and services, supporting its residents and surrounding communities.

What happens when our technicians arrive with you in Wellington

  • Our engineers check what got in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The responses alter the work, which is why we ask before pricing.
  • The tainted fuel comes from your tank.
  • Lines flushed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains after that isn't the thing that caused the issue.
  • Our engineers pour clean diesel in and prime the system.
  • After it's fired up, our technicians confirm it runs correctly on new diesel.

Then it is ready to set off. Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted early, and because all of this is done where your car is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

A distinct matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Wellington

The fault isn't the same, though the opening rule is — never start it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol weakens your diesel and removes the protection the system relies on. Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

We handle both, and AdBlue removal around Wellington has its own page with the full story — including why it's usually the more serious of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Wellington

Truthfully, no single figure fits on a page like this. The job differs. Here is what moves it:

  • This is the key one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, set against how much your tank can hold.
  • Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for our van.

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and if it has run. For the car at home that's going nowhere and is not time-critical, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: frequent queries in Wellington

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Wellington?

Yes, and it is where a fair part of this work takes place. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there. With the owner's permission we attend BP and the other forecourts locally routinely.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether your motor has run counts far more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been drawn right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving shifts the problem along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely valuable thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a proper standard, which is no alteration at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave the car turned off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. That tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to cope with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the vehicle is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

Is the car still with you?

Leave it shut off.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere safe, switch it off then keep it off. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Motorists fear this far more than they need to.
