Petrol in Diesel

West Cliff: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, across West Cliff and the rest of North Yorkshire. The first thing to do is not to start your engine. While the motor has not yet been started and the petrol is still in your tank, a drain is almost always all it takes, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much went in. Our engineers can tell you what your next stage is. Ring us — this goes before everything else.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will generally not run at all, so the person stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it moves off — fine enough for a few miles. Drivers have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never start the vehicle. And if started, never depend on it: your fuel system is wearing down while you drive.
  • Leave your ignition be as well. Diesel has two jobs: it combusts, and before it ignites it lubricates your high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is usually sufficient to prime the system, which moves this petrol out of that tank and into exactly those parts.
  • That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you get is a bigger tank of the same blend. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Stay still if it is sensible to. Hazards on, motor off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Ladysmith Avenue, anywhere — a difficult spot for us beats a started motor, and nothing is quicker for us to sort than a car that never moved.
  • Have your whereabouts ready before you call. A postcode beginning YO21 3 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between our van arriving and a van circling.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Expect three queries — what got in, about how much, plus if the car has been run. Your responses decide whatever follows.

Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

It starts at the pump, generally. Regularly the work finishes at one as well. We operate on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the station's agreement, and so if you are still at Esso that's usually where this drain takes place.

No place except the forecourt can it be spotted with your engine still cold. Our engineers can still put it right where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump, right from the tank. None of that is a disaster, but the flush then has to reach past that tank to your lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for the keys are what determine that.

Away from the pump, the next driver can get by — so yes, let the staff help you move the vehicle. Very much worth it. Shifting it four bays does not justify firing it.

Will our technicians cover your corner of West Cliff?

Whitby, Castle Park, High Stakesby, Fishburn Park, Airy Hill — all of them on the rounds that bring us across to West Cliff too, a residential suburb.

Our engineers still come. Those places above are merely the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of locations across North Yorkshire, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Near the boundary, or anywhere a satnav misreads? Ring us to check instead of assuming.

This map marks the ground this page includes. Your vehicle does not need to move to us. We work across all of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Nothing alerts you, since from the driver's seat there's nothing to be warned about. Your diesel Nissan Qashqai will have felt perfectly ordinary on the way back from West Cliff Primary School, and they all do — which is the catch with petrol in a diesel instead of the reverse. Diesel in a petrol motor mostly refuses to run, stopping the motorist and stopping the harm with them. Petrol in a diesel starts, idles, pulls away as though nothing had happened, and all the while your pump keeps working without the lubrication its fuel is supposed to supply. Tell us about how far, and how hard. The harder matters more.

The parts that should be getting lubricated are wearing instead, and your car gives no sign of it: a diesel on a diluted tank starts and drives off perfectly well. Chance the trip home from Whitby Rugby Club? No. Phone us and leave the Audi A4 where it sits.

Standing still, it gets no worse. Your pump isn't turning, so whatever occurred on the way to Whitby Cricket Club in that diesel Vauxhall Astra is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on your engine to find more of it.

A motor you collected two days ago gets driven further before anybody spots anything, which is the hire and courtesy issue in one sentence — and how far it went is what settles the volume of petrol arriving at the fuel injectors. Nothing sloppy about the mistake itself: a newer diesel filler neck accepts the smaller petrol nozzle with almost no resistance, so new locations see most of these. Call us from wherever you are, near Whitby Leisure Centre or not, and we will get to the Peugeot 208.

It got a couple of streets and stopped. The throttle went dead, your idle turned ragged, and the diesel Citroen C3 is now waiting near Crow's Nest. That deadness is the fuel failing to build pressure correctly instead of your engine giving up — and as there is no dashboard light for it, cars in that position typically get driven once more before anybody rings. Please don't. Turn it off then ring us.

Kerbside call-outs around West Cliff

Not everybody finds a sensible spot to pull in. Hazards on at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Ocean Road because you worked it out after setting off — our engineers take that call so often that it is the ordinary kind.

Wait beside the car while it's sensible to sit in it, but out of the car when it's not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mixture further into your fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier. However inconvenient the place, it is no bother for us to get to it, and that's far better for the vehicle than pressing on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

This is where your A1(M) comes in — under 50 miles away from West Cliff. Lost power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, rather than a tidy stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Never start it to move it. Come off at the first safe exit then turn off. On a longer drive — anything near the under 50 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you phone. It affects what we bring.

What our technicians do when our engineers get to you around West Cliff

  • The answers shape the work, which is why we ask before pricing: what was put in, how much of it, and whether your engine has run.
  • Away goes the contaminated fuel.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.
  • Our technicians pour clean diesel in and prime your system.
  • The engine is fired up and tested to make sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

From that point, you are ready to pull away. Lasting damage is very rare when it has been caught quickly, and as everything is done where your car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around West Cliff is a separate job

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening step is the same — never start the car — but the problem isn't. The protection a fuel system depends on gets stripped away by petrol, which thins the diesel. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and residue.

AdBlue removal around West Cliff has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is often the more serious of the two. Our engineers handle both.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain around West Cliff

What shifts the price is laid out below, because the job isn't one job and our technicians cannot frankly put a single number on this page.

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, weighed against how much that tank takes.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for our van.

Tell us your car, the amount and if it has run, and you will get a firm answer instead of a range. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and is not pressing, works too.

West Cliff drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

At a petrol station around West Cliff, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes, and it is where a big share of this work gets done. Routinely, provided the site consents: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that place is something our engineers answer straight away.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what takes the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it is salvageable a lot more commonly than drivers assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It's not a modification, so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Your tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to cope with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

Is the car still with you?

Switched off is how it stays.

If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere sensible, turn it off then keep it off. Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best position available — and motorists fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
