Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in West End? Don't Start It
With the tank still carrying the petrol and the motor not yet run, nearly every job needs only a drain, so keep the motor off. That outcome is determined in the minutes right after filling up, and not by the amount that got in. Throughout West End and the rest of Buckinghamshire, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and flushes it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Ring us and our technicians will tell you what follows after that before you try anything else.
The next five steps: petrol in a diesel
- Don't fire it up. Fired up anyway? Then don't believe it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle typically cannot run, and so the person stops and the damage ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It drives off fine, for a few miles. People get that backwards. It is not okay — that fuel system is wearing down every mile you drive.
- Switching your ignition on usually primes the system, and priming is what moves petrol out of that tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the car's ignition be.
- Never add diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage the way that advice presumes, and topping up removes nothing — it just hands you a larger tank of the same mixture. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
- A motor that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to sort out, so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on West End Place? Hazards on, and keep it there. An odd spot works for us better than a started engine.
- Check where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts HP22 5, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than showing up.
- Three details determine the whole job: the fuel you put in, the ballpark amount involved, plus whether anything has been running since. The number is 0333 366 0103.
Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel
Pumps are where this work usually begins, and where a large part of it finishes. Still at the nearest petrol station? Then that is normally where it takes place. Petrol station forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the owner.
A filling station is the one setting the mistake gets stopped before your engine has run. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from your tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That is not a catastrophe, and we can still deal with it where it is. It does mean your lines and the filter need rinsing as well as that tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for your key.
Staff will usually pitch in pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next customer get through. Accept the assistance. Four vehicle lengths is not worth the risk.
How much fuel your pump has drawn is what we are actually asking — not how long ago any of it was. So the enquiry our technicians like sounds like this: diesel Renault Megane, a few litres of unleaded, a couple of miles done, now switched off at Chilton View Garden Centre.
Risk the journey home from The Chandos Arms? No. It will start and it will move off perfectly well, which is the issue — a diesel on a thinned tank runs generally while wearing the parts your fuel should be protecting. Leave the Nissan Qashqai then call us.
Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off and ring us. Happy on the way out to Weston Turville childrens play area, gutless on the way back? Then look at that tank. Petrol thins diesel; thinner fuel slips past the close-fitting parts that build injection pressure; and the further your diesel Audi A4 went, the less of that pressure it held.
Pulled off the forecourt, read your receipt, and parked your diesel Ford Focus up close to Weston Turville Village Hall a couple of hundred yards later? That is about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Ring us then leave the car off. The short distance truly helps, but it was still a start and a drive, so thinned fuel has arrived at the fuel filter and your pump — which is why our engineers rinse the lines rather than only clearing your tank.
A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle limp, idle ragged, and the diesel Peugeot 3008 is parked up close to Stoke Mandeville Methodist Church. Your engine isn't giving up — that sluggishness is fuel that won't build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, and so vehicles like yours generally get driven again before anyone picks up the phone. Please don't. Off, and ring us.
Can we cover your part of West End?
West End is a residential suburb, so we get out to it and to the villages near it on those same rounds: Weston Turville, Church End, Brook End, Worlds End and Bye Green.
If yours isn't on this list that does not mean we don't come — there are pages for most locations in Buckinghamshire, and the ones mentioned above are simply the closest neighbours. On the border, or somewhere the satnav misreads? Phone to enquire rather than guessing.
Check our map for the area shown on this page. We operate roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of it, and your vehicle doesn't need to travel to us.
Stranded at the kerbside around West End
Some drivers get no suitable place to pull over at all. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge beside World's End Lane as you worked it out after setting off — we take that call so often that it is the ordinary kind.
Wait by the motor if it is safe to sit inside, but out of the vehicle when it's not. Don't restart it to get to a safer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that mix deeper into the fuel system. However tricky the location, it's no bother for us to come to it, and that is much better for the car than driving on.
Petrol in a diesel, but the car has travelled
under 15 miles from West End, the M40 is what counts here. Lost power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, rather than a tidy stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.
Don't start it to reposition. Get off at the next sensible exit and switch off. Suppose the worst of it on a long run. Anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you phone. What our technicians bring changes.
West End itself
West End is a suburban area in Buckinghamshire, situated near the River Thames and characterised by detached housing. West End sits at an elevation of around 100 metres, with nearby places including Weston Turville, Church End, and Brook End. West End is located approximately 33 miles from London and 18 miles from Milton Keynes, making it a commuter-friendly location. West End has a population of around 1780 residents, who enjoy the area's riverside setting.
When our technicians arrive with you around West End: what happens
- Our technicians ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has your engine run? Those answers change what the work really is.
- Our technicians clear the tank of all the contaminated mixture.
- What is left in the system shouldn't be what started the trouble, and so the lines get purged and the filter cleaned.
- The fuel system gets primed, on clean diesel.
- Your engine is turned on and checked to be sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.
From there, you are ready to set off. Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been noticed soon, and since all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never has to go to a garage.
West End AdBlue removal is a different matter
If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening instruction is unchanged — do not crank it — but the fault isn't. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the lubrication the fuel system relies on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and deposits.
Both are ours. There is a separate West End page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in West End?
What changes the figure is listed below, since the job is not one job and we can't truthfully put a single number on this page.
- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much that tank can hold.
- AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
- Where the car is, and if a technician can sensibly get to and work on it.
The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear instead of as a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.
West End drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel
I'm on a forecourt around West End. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?
Yes, and it's where a good share of this work happens. Our engineers visit Esso and the other forecourts nearby regularly, with the site's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you whether we can work there.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Whether the motor has run matters far more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been drawn right through, or has it not?
Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?
Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of your tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable far more frequently than motorists fear.
Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties
A drain and flush carried out properly isn't a change and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. The pump still has to live with it, since that tank still has petrol in it afterwards.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a franchised dealer.
Still with the car?
Never turn the car back on.
Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, and let it remain that way. A parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more commonly than drivers expect.
