West End: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
With that tank still holding the fuel and the motor not yet started, nearly every job takes only a drain, so leave your engine off. That outcome is decided in the minutes immediately after filling up, and not by the amount that got in. Throughout West End and the rest of North Yorkshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it is, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. One call our way will be sufficient: our technicians will tell you what comes after this. Do this right away.
What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order
- Never crank it. Started all the same? Then do not depend on it. Diesel in a petrol car normally cannot run, and so the person stops and the damage ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off fine, for a couple of miles. Motorists get that reversed. It's not all right — that fuel system is wearing down every mile you drive.
- Turning your ignition on frequently primes that system, and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the ignition off.
- Do not add diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage the way that advice implies, and topping up clears nothing — it merely hands you a larger tank of the same mixture. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
- We would much rather come to an odd spot than have it started — so if you sensibly can, sit tight. Nothing is simpler to sort than a motor that has never moved. On the verge on Station Road, that means hazards on then leave the car.
- Know where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts DL8 1, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of turning up.
- Ring 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, roughly how many litres, and whether the motor has started. Those three replies determine the entire job.
Don't drive it home. The commute has already forced a real load of petrol-thinned diesel through your high-pressure pump of your Renault Megane, and the trip back would roughly double it for no reason at all. Call us from the platform if that is quicker. We never need you hovering over your car at Northallerton whilst we get it done, and we'd far rather speak to you tonight than find out on Monday.
Nothing gets worse while it waits. Whatever the diesel Audi A6 did on the way to Little Crakehall Park, it's doing none of that now: the pump is not turning. So take your time — but don't drive it home to buy yourself any.
Our technicians clean the fuel lines instead of only clearing your tank, and the reason is that weakened fuel has already got to your filter and the pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The drive really assists — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Citroen C3 parked up by St Gregory's a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Call us and leave it off.
Clattering, a lumpy idle, white smoke, a throttle gone dead. That's a misfuelled diesel Kia Sportage telling you what is wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, near Crakehall Hall or anywhere else, and do not start the vehicle to find a better location.
No dashboard light exists for this, which is why motors in that position generally get driven a second time before somebody phones. Please don't be one of them. The throttle went dead and the idle turned uneven after a few streets, and your diesel Ford Fiesta is now resting close to White Cross. Sluggishness there means fuel that can't build pressure properly rather than an engine giving up. Turn off. Phone us.
On a forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel
Plenty of the job starts at a forecourt, so a good part of it gets done at one. If you are still on the forecourt at Crakehall Filling Station, that is generally where this drain happens — we work on garage forecourts routinely, with the station's consent.
No place other than a forecourt can the mistake be caught with the motor still unstarted. We can still deal with it where it stands, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and moved there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a catastrophe, though the flush then has to reach past that tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for the key are what decide that.
Attendants will usually help out pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get past. Take the offer. Cranking the car for four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.
West End plus the towns beside it
Great Crakehall, Little Crakehall, Kirkbridge, Langthorne, Patrick Brompton — every one of them on the runs that carry us over to West End as well, a residential suburb.
There are pages for most locations around North Yorkshire, and the ones listed above are merely the immediate neighbours — so yours being left off this list means nothing whatsoever about if we come. Near the boundary, or anywhere a satnav can't find? Ring us to ask rather than presuming.
The map is the patch this page spans. All of that is territory we serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You do not drive your vehicle anywhere.
Broken down on the kerbside around West End
Not everyone finds a sensible spot to pull in. Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge beside A684 since you worked it out after setting off — our technicians take that call regularly enough that it is the normal kind.
Fine where you are? Wait with it. Not fine? Step out and away from it. Don't fire up the motor to nurse the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that mix further into the system. We'll take the van to an awkward spot without any trouble, and for your car that's far better than carrying on.
A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?
Here is where the local A1(M) counts, under 3 miles away from West End. A drop in power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, instead of a clean stop — and a misfilled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.
Get off at the next sensible exit, switch off, and never restart the vehicle to move it. It alters what our technicians bring, so tell us when you ring: on a longer drive — anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through your filter, the pump and your injectors.
A bit about West End
West End is a small suburban area situated on the riverside in North Yorkshire, with an elevation of around 55 metres. West End lies near the villages of Great Crakehall and Little Crakehall, and is approximately 12 miles from the city of Ripon. West End has a population of around 644 people, and its housing stock is predominantly made up of detached homes. West End is located in a scenic area, with the nearby Kirkbridge offering additional local amenities.
What our technicians do when we get to you in West End
- Three things get asked before any price — the fuel that got in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
- The tainted mixture is pulled out of that tank.
- What is left in the fuel system shouldn't be what created the issue, and so your fuel lines get flushed and your filter cleaned.
- New diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.
- Our engineers fire it up and make sure it runs properly on new diesel.
The car is then ready for you to pull away. All of it is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught soon, permanent damage is very rare.
AdBlue in a diesel tank around West End is a separate matter
If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening rule is unchanged — never fire it up — but this issue is not. Petrol dilutes the diesel and takes away the lubrication your fuel system depends on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and deposits instead.
We deal with both, and AdBlue removal around West End has its own page with the detail — including why it is usually the more significant of the two.
Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain around West End
What changes the figure is listed below, as this job is not one job and our engineers can't honestly put a single number on this page.
- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
- Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there sensibly?
A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the amount, and if it has run. Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.
Things we get about petrol in diesel in West End
At a petrol station in West End, can you do a fuel drain there?
Yes — forecourts are where a fair share of this takes place. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you if we can work there. With the owner's agreement our engineers work at another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts locally regularly.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and much more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been pulled through the system.
I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?
Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of your tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable a lot more often than motorists fear.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
No. Carried out correctly, clearing and cleaning is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. That tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to live with it.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?
There's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, since we drain and clean the car wherever it is.
Is your car still with you?
Leave it turned off.
Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, switch off, then let the car remain that way. This is recoverable from far more frequently than motorists fear, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
