Petrol in Diesel

West End: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, all over West End and the rest of West Yorkshire. The first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. While your engine has not been started and the fuel is still sitting in your tank, a drain is nearly always all it needs, and the coming few minutes decide that, not how much got in. Contact us so we will show you what happens after that before you attempt anything else.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • While you drive, your pump and your injectors wear. That's why you do not crank it, and why you never trust it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel in particular — the point most people get wrong — is that it drives away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally cannot run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the damage with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it burns it protects — your high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the ignition be as well: flicking it on is frequently sufficient to prime the system, and priming pulls petrol from that tank into precisely those components.
  • That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It does not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Remain where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that hasn't moved is the easiest one to handle, and our team would rather travel to an awkward spot than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on West End, switch the hazards on then keep the vehicle there.
  • Check where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts BD19 3, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of arriving.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Expect three things — what got in, roughly how many litres, and whether your car has been turned over. Your replies determine whatever happens next.

Don't take it home. The drive in has already put a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of your Renault Clio, and the journey back would about double it for no gain at all. Call us from the platform if that is easier. We never need you standing over your car outside Low Moor while our engineers get on, and we would far rather talk to you tonight than discover on Monday.

We'll come to you, drain your tank, clean the fuel lines and put fresh diesel in so you can drive away. So if petrol went into the diesel Nissan Qashqai in West End and you are stuck outside Tesco with a boot loaded with shopping, call us — and never crank it once more to leave the space. A mile or so at easy throttle pulls very little of it, which is why these are usually the simple cases.

Your pump waits upstream of the injectors, so whatever a wearing one sheds passes on with the fuel — which is why we're firm about not driving on. Ring us, then leave your diesel BMW X1 where it's by Turnsteads Community Centre.

Hire car? Company car? Call them before us. Some agreements want the firm to authorise the work, and that is much quicker dealt with up front than later. Then phone us about the Citroen C3, the diesel one, by Cleckheaton Library. Don't worry that you cannot say how full your tank was — nearly nobody can two days into a motor, and it is something our engineers work out there. The reason for asking: harm from petrol in a diesel is a matter of share. A couple of litres in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mixture than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of it, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger mixture, more knocking, more smoke, flatter throttle.

What happens next is the problem. The engine immediately draws the petrol left resting in your filter and the feed lines back round through the pump a second time, because draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it then put new diesel in, someone sure of themselves will tell you — and that tip is only half right, because do it to a diesel Volkswagen Touran parked up, Whitechapel Church say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound sensible. Call us instead. Our technicians flush your system and take the fuel filter off where the vehicle has a serviceable one, and that is the difference between your car being fixed and the vehicle only starting.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in West End

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

Most of this work starts at a pump, so a good share of that ends up finished there. Still at Tesco? Then that is generally where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the site.

A forecourt is the one setting the mistake can be caught before the engine has run. The few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for the keys settle how much needs rinsing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from your tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and your filter require rinsing as well as your tank. It's not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still sort it out where your car sits.

Attendants will normally pitch in pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next driver get past. Welcome the offer. Cranking the car just to roll four car lengths is not.

Will our technicians reach your side of West End?

West End is a residential suburb, so our technicians get out to it and to the places by it on the same runs: Moorbottom, Moorend, Cleckheaton, Marsh and Hartshead Moor Side.

Not on this list? It says nothing. The places above are only the nearest few, and nearly all locations across West Yorkshire have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Guessing is the thing to avoid, especially on the border or somewhere the satnav struggles. Contact us to ask.

This map is the ground the page includes. Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is ground our technicians cover, and none of that needs the vehicle to come to us.

Stranded on the kerb anywhere around West End?

Some drivers get no safe place to pull over at all. A routine call for us rather than an odd one: worked out after setting off, finished up along the verge on Whitcliffe Road or at a lay-by with the hazards going.

Remain by the car while it's safe to sit in it, but out of it when it isn't. Don't start up your motor to limp it somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the blend further into the fuel system. However inconvenient the spot, it's no bother for us to get to it, and that is a lot better for your car than carrying on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the car has rolled

under a mile from West End, your M62 is what counts now. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a clean stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Take the next junction that is sensible, stop there, and do not start the vehicle to reposition. Long drive? Anything near the under 5 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the contamination. Say that on the call, since it alters what goes in the van.

A little about West End

West End is a suburban area in West Yorkshire, situated approximately 4.6 miles from Bradford and 167.3 miles from London. West End sits at an elevation of 137 metres, characterised by its predominantly terraced housing stock. West End is located near other local places such as Moorbottom, Moorend, and Cleckheaton, and has a population of around 5197 residents.

What follows when our engineers arrive with you in West End

  • The answers change the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing: what was put in, how much of it, and whether the engine has run.
  • Out goes the contaminated fuel.
  • Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever is left later on is not the thing that started the problem.
  • Your system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
  • We turn it on and make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.

The car is then ready for you to pull away. All of it is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in West End?

Don't start it: that opening rule holds whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this fault itself. Petrol thins your diesel and strips the protection the system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

AdBlue removal around West End has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it's often the more serious of the two. We handle both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in West End?

One figure would not be fair here, because this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • This is the big one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is safe for a van.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear and not as a range. If it is not pressing — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel queries from West End drivers

I'm on a forecourt around West End. Can you drain the car on the spot?

A big part of this work gets done there, so yes. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like EG On the Move is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear if working there's possible.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. What determines how much work is required is whether that mix has been pulled through the system — because although five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, then leave the car off. It is recoverable a lot more frequently than drivers assume, even though driving is what moves the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no change at all. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has weakened isn't restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate fault. So no. Later? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

There's no need to bring it to a main dealer, because our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is.

Is the vehicle still with you?

Don't turn the car on again.

Turn it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from far more commonly than drivers fear, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
