Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in West Freeland?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, throughout West Freeland and the rest of Renfrewshire. The first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. When the motor has not yet turned over and the fuel is still sitting in that tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much got in. Contact us before all else starts, so you'll hear what comes next.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Don't crank it — and do not depend on it when it fires up. Here is the part drivers get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine filled with diesel generally just won't run, and so the driver stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel filled with petrol typically starts, idles and moves off perfectly well for a few miles. It is not fine. It's wearing out that fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Flicking the car's ignition on usually primes that system, and priming is what moves petrol out of your tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave your ignition off.
  • That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It does not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you get is a larger tank of the same blend. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • A motor that hasn't moved is the quickest one to handle, and so remain where you are if you safely can. Parked on the verge on Turnhill Drive? Hazards on, then keep it there. A difficult location works for us better than a started engine.
  • Before you call, have your position. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode beginning PA8 7 — that's what decides whether our van shows up or circles.
  • What was put in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has started — those three answers settle your whole visit. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Tonight, please, rather than Monday. Running it home is the one thing not to do: a commute has forced real quantity through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return journey would close to double the figure to no end. The Volkswagen Golf can sit at Dalmuir perfectly well. Call from the platform if handier; standing over us whilst our technicians work is not necessary.

If you have put petrol in your diesel Renault Clio around West Freeland and you are now sat outside Morrisons with a boot loaded with shopping, call us. Do not crank it a second time to exit that bay. Our technicians will come to you, drain the tank, flush the fuel lines and put new diesel in so you can head home. A mile or so at gentle throttle draws very little of it, so these are often the simple cases.

Twenty to nine outside the local primary school, running late, and the till receipt in your hand says unleaded. Hazards on, motor off, ring us. Three miles in the BMW 3 Series feels like nothing, but a diesel pump supplies fuel on demand — while a frantic morning dash needs plenty.

Strange spots are where this occurs most, and the reason is mechanical instead of sloppy: the smaller petrol nozzle slides into a modern diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all. Topped up by Erskine Parish Church without thinking, in a diesel Audi A6 you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anyone realises, and distance is what decides how much petrol gets to your injectors.

The filter, the lines, the pump and the rail: that is where the mix is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with that tank contents. So that tank isn't where most of the problem rests by this point, and a diesel Volvo XC60 that made it near Erskine Library needs your system cleared rather than drained.

Clearing petrol from your diesel at a forecourt

A large share of the work ends up finished at the pump, as that's where it mostly begins. We work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement, so if you are still at Shell that's normally where this drain gets done.

At a forecourt, it is halted with your engine never started, and nowhere else does it. The few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for the key determine how much requires cleaning. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as that tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still sort it out where your car sits.

Attendants will generally pitch in pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next driver get by. Welcome the assistance. Cranking it just to roll four car lengths is not.

Places we serve near West Freeland

Park Mains, East Freeland, Bourne Court, East Craigend, Garnieland — every one of these on our journeys that carry us over to West Freeland itself, a residential suburb.

Not on that list? That says nothing. The places above are just the closest few, and most locations across Renfrewshire have a page of their own elsewhere on our site. Contact us and enquire instead of presuming, especially where you're on a border or somewhere a satnav can't find.

The map is the ground this page spans. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: every bit of that is ground our technicians cover, and none of that needs the car to travel to us.

West Freeland: broken down wherever you pulled up

Not everybody has a safe spot to pull in. A normal call for us rather than an unusual one: realised after setting off, finished up along the verge beside Turnyland Meadows or in a lay-by with your hazards flashing.

Remain by the motor if it's wise to wait there, but clear of the car if it isn't. Don't fire it up to get to a safer location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mixture deeper into the fuel system. We will bring the van to an inconvenient spot without any bother, and for your car that is a lot better than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has gone

This is where your M8 comes in, under 3 miles from West Freeland. A loss of power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, rather than a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Don't start it to reposition. Come off at the first safe exit and switch off. On a longer drive — anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you ring. It changes what our engineers bring.

About West Freeland

West Freeland is a suburban area located on the coast of Renfrewshire, with a relatively low elevation of around 20 metres. West Freeland sits near the cities of Glasgow and Paisley, and is close to other nearby places such as Park Mains and East Freeland. West Freeland has a mix of housing types, but is predominantly characterised by terraced homes. West Freeland is situated approximately 8.6 miles from Glasgow, making it a commuter-friendly location.

What our technicians do when our technicians arrive with you around West Freeland

  • Our engineers check what went in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The answers shape the work, which is why we ask before pricing.
  • Away comes the contaminated mixture.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later is not the thing that started the problem.
  • The fuel system gets bled, on new diesel.
  • It is started with fresh diesel in it, and we check that it's running correctly.

From that point, you are ready to drive away. Lasting damage is very rare when it has been spotted soon, and because all of it is done where your car is, it never needs to go to a workshop.

AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around West Freeland?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — the motor stays off — while this issue under it's a separate one altogether. The lubrication a fuel system relies on is taken away by petrol, which thins the diesel. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own West Freeland page. Both are ours to deal with.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in West Freeland

We cannot put one figure on this page truthfully, because the job isn't one job. What changes it:

  • This is the big one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, measured against how much the tank holds.
  • Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there safely?

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear rather than as a range. Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel questions from West Freeland motorists

At a petrol station around West Freeland, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes, and it's where a fair share of this work happens. We work at Henry's and the other forecourts nearby regularly, with the owner's consent — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you if our technicians can work there.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It hinges on the ratio instead of the litres, and much more on whether the engine has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that blend sucked through it.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Pull over somewhere safe, turn off, then keep it off. Driving is what moves the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it's salvageable far more frequently than drivers assume, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out correctly, draining and rinsing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a different fault from a different era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind replaces. Your pump still has to live with it, because that tank still has petrol in it later.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There's no need to take it to a dealership, because we drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

You, and the car, still together?

Never switch your engine back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle after that. A parked, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more commonly than drivers expect.
