Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in West Green?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, all over West Green and the rest of South Yorkshire. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. When the motor has not yet run and the fuel is still inside that tank, a drain is nearly always all it requires, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much got in. Our technicians can tell you what your next move will be. Phone — that comes before all else.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will generally not run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it drives off — all right for a couple of miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So never fire it up. And if started, don't rely on it: your fuel system is wearing down whenever you drive.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps the injection pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only does the one. Which is why your ignition remains off too — turn it on and you commonly prime your system, and that is petrol leaving that tank for exactly those parts.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It leaves you a fuller tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system does not accept petrol by percentage in the way that guidance presumes — so do not add diesel on top to dilute it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Our team would sooner travel to an odd spot than have it started — so if you safely can, stay put. Nothing is simpler to handle than a motor that has never shifted. On the verge on Bellcross Way, that means hazards on then leave the car.
  • Check where you are before phoning. A postcode starting S71 5, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than arriving.
  • What got in, about how many litres, and if the engine has started — the three answers decide the whole call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

How many miles you travelled is what our technicians ask about, not how long the vehicle has been parked — and this is why. Diesel performs two tasks on its way through an engine: it ignites, and before burning it lubricates the injection pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first only. So a quick top-up on the trip in, the realisation coming close to eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Tiguan sitting at Barnsley since quarter past eight tells us those few miles were travelled with the pump running on a liquid robbed of much of its protection. Ring us then leave the vehicle exactly where it is.

We are in car parks like the one outside Co-op Food often, and it's rarely your fuel that complicates them. It's the bay. Motors both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Sometimes a height bar at the way in, which decides whether a van reaches you at all. So mention how hemmed in you are when you ring, and which way the vehicle is pointing. If there is no clearance to work beside your Audi A4, we move it without the motor. That isn't pedantry over a couple of seconds: starts prime things, fuel comes out of your tank on to the pump, and a vehicle moved twice for a roomier bay is silently a bigger job than one nobody touched.

Your diesel Dacia Duster will have seemed completely usual on the way back from Lift St Helen's. They always do, and that is the catch with petrol in a diesel rather than the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol motor and it usually will not run, and so the driver stops and the wear stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it fires up, ticks over and drives off as though nothing has happened — all the while your high-pressure pump does its work without the lubrication the fuel is supposed to be providing. Nothing warns you, as from behind the wheel there is nothing to caution you about. Call us with about how far you went and how hard you pushed it; the second answer counts more than the first.

This is what a job in the car park at The Old Bridge Inn typically looks like. We reach the car, ask what got in, about how much, and whether the engine has run since — those three replies determine most of the work. Then the contaminated mix comes out of your tank, the fuel lines get flushed, and the filter comes off where your Ford Kuga has a serviceable one. New diesel goes in and the fuel system is primed. Then our engineers start the car, check it runs correctly, and you pull away.

Calling from close to Cudworth Library? Three things help us. The filler — which side of your car it is on. Room for a technician beside you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The place itself scarcely counts: on-street is where our engineers work most, and we would much rather have a tight spot than a car someone has driven somewhere simpler. Then it is a drain for the Citroen C3, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines rinsed, clean fuel put round the entire system. By now the worst of it is in your lines and not that tank.

Can petrol be pumped out of a diesel on the forecourt?

The job starts at the pump, generally. Often enough the job finishes on site as well. The drain generally happens on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Stay Warm Solid Fuels LTD? Given the station's permission, that's a place our engineers work, and regularly.

The forecourt is the single setting this can be halted before your engine has started. The few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for the keys determine how much requires cleaning. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the filter need rinsing as well as that tank. It is not a catastrophe, and we can still put it right where the vehicle sits.

The staff will usually help you move it away from the petrol pump so the next customer can get by. It is worth doing. Starting it over four car lengths? No.

Parts our team reach near West Green

Cudworth, Belle Green, Monk Bretton, Carlton, Lundwood — each of them on our trips that carry us out to West Green as well, a residential suburb.

Our engineers do come. Those places above are merely the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all locations across South Yorkshire, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. Assuming is the mistake to resist, above all on a boundary or somewhere your phone struggles. Contact us to ask.

The map marks the patch this page spans. Your car never needs to move to us. We operate across every bit of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stuck on the kerbside in West Green

The opportunity to stop anywhere suitable doesn't come to everybody. Set off, then noticed? Landed on the verge on Charity Street, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards on? That's a routine call here. Not an unusual one.

Out of the car if it is not safe to be there, with it if it is. Never fire it up to get to a better place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mix deeper into your fuel system. Our van heading to an inconvenient location is no problem for us, and it is far better for the car than pressing on.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

The M1 is the road that matters here, and sits under 5 miles from West Green. It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's some smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a clean stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Come off at the next sensible exit, turn off, and don't start the car to reposition. It affects what our technicians bring, and so say so when you ring: on a longer trip — anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the injectors.

West Green itself

West Green is a suburban area in South Yorkshire, situated near the River Dearne at an elevation of around 45 metres. West Green lies approximately 8 miles from Wakefield and is close to nearby places such as Cudworth, Belle Green, and Monk Bretton. West Green has a population of around 1996 people and predominantly consists of semi-detached housing. West Green is located about 152.8 miles north of London, in the Yorkshire and the Humber region.

When our technicians arrive with you around West Green: what happens

  • Three things get established before any price — the fuel that got in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • Our technicians empty that tank of the contaminated mixture.
  • Our engineers clean the lines and clean your filter, so what is left in your system isn't what started the trouble.
  • Priming follows, once new diesel is in.
  • Our technicians fire it up and make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

Then it is ready to set off. Everything is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught quickly, permanent damage is very rare.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around West Green is a different problem

Don't crank it: that first instruction holds whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the issue itself. The lubrication a fuel system depends on is stripped away by petrol, which thins your diesel. Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own West Green page. Both are ours to deal with.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in West Green

Our engineers can't put one number on this page frankly, as the job isn't one job. What moves it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, measured against how much that tank takes.
  • Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's safe for a van.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and whether the motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. If it isn't pressing — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: common questions in West Green

At a petrol station around West Green, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes, and it is where a fair part of this work happens. Regularly, provided the site consents: JET, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something our technicians answer on the spot.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It rests on the ratio instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether your engine has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that blend drawn through it.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving shifts the problem along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, draining and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a different fault from a separate era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind replaces. After that? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

No. Our technicians drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a main dealer.

Waiting next to it?

Switched off is the way the car stays.

Switch it off somewhere sensible and leave it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from far more often than drivers expect, and a stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in.
