Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in West Ham? Don't Start It

Never start the motor. While the petrol is still inside that tank and your engine has not turned over, a drain is nearly always all it takes — and that is decided in the next few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they sit, throughout West Ham and the rest of Hampshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. Phone before everything else happens, so you'll hear what happens from there.

Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • While you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors suffer. That's why you do not fire it up, and why you do not trust it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel especially — the bit motorists get wrong — is that it drives off normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor usually will not run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the damage with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Leave the ignition be too. Diesel performs two roles: it combusts, and before it burns it greases the high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is commonly all it takes to prime the system, which carries the petrol out of that tank then into exactly those components.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It gives you a larger tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage the way that guidance suggests — so don't add diesel on top to weaken it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Sit tight if it's safe to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on West Ham Roundabout, anywhere — an awkward place for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to sort out than a car that never shifted.
  • Get your location prepared before you ring. A postcode beginning RG22 6 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between our van arriving and the van circling.
  • What got in, roughly how many litres, and also whether the motor has fired — the three replies decide the whole call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Do not drive it home. The commute has already put a real volume of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of that Volkswagen Golf, and the drive back would close to double it for no gain at all. Call us from the platform if that's simpler. Our engineers never need you standing over the vehicle outside Basingstoke whilst our engineers work, and we would very much rather hear from you tonight than realise on Monday.

Somebody will advise you to move it out of the gateway and deal with it later. Do not. A wrongly fuelled diesel Peugeot 308 on the zig-zags outside Winklebury Infant School is a nuisance; the same car fired up three more times to be polite is a fuel system rather than a tank. Every restart primes the fuel lines and draws more petrol past the filter and into the pump. Stay put, let people moan, and call us.

Leave it there overnight. Ring us next morning. Nothing about a diesel Audi A4 sitting in the parking area by The Winkle worsens while it waits, tank of petrol or not, and the job remains an easy one right up until the moment it gets taken home. The question we arrive with is about the run there: a cold motor over a short distance is where petrol burns least well, and whatever fails to burn can work its way past the rings into the oil.

Petrol in a diesel does its harm as a proportion, which is the reason we ask at all: the same few litres waiting in an almost empty tank make a far stronger blend than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel wants — so a stronger mixture knocks more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Nearly nobody knows how full the tank was in a motor collected two days ago, and our engineers work that out on the spot. Do call the hire or company firm first, though: some contracts want them to sign off the work, and that's far faster settled before than after. Then ring us about the Vauxhall Astra by Odeon.

What takes place next is the problem. The motor at once sucks the petrol still sitting in the fuel filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, as draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put clean diesel in, somebody sure of themselves will tell you — and that suggestion is half right, since do it to a diesel Ford Kuga parked up, Planet Ice say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound reasonable. Ring us instead. Our technicians flush the circuit and take your filter off where your vehicle has a working one, and that's the difference between your car being repaired and the vehicle simply starting.

At a forecourt: removing petrol from the diesel

The job starts at a forecourt, usually. Frequently it ends on site as well. The drain normally happens on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Texaco? Given the station's consent, that's a place we work, and regularly.

The forecourt is the only spot it is halted before the motor has started. The few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for the key determine how much requires rinsing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from the tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and your filter need flushing as well as the tank. It is not a disaster, and our technicians can still deal with it where the car is.

Staff will normally pitch in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Accept the help. Firing it to shift four vehicle lengths is not.

Service in West Ham

Winklebury, South Ham, Buckskin, Houndmills, Kings Furlong — each of them on our trips that bring us over to West Ham as well, a residential suburb.

There are dedicated pages for the majority of towns around Hampshire, and the ones named above are merely the closest neighbours — so yours being left off this list says nothing whatsoever about if our engineers come. Close to a boundary, or anywhere the satnav can't find? Phone to ask rather than guessing.

That map shows the ground this page includes. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: every bit of it is territory our technicians serve, and none of that asks the car to move to us.

Stuck on the kerbside in West Ham

Some people find no safe place to stop at all. Set off, then noticed? Landed on the verge beside Euskirchen Way, or sat in some lay-by with the hazard lights going? That's a normal call here. Not a rare one.

Out of your car while it is not wise to wait inside, by it when it is. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the problem: restart the vehicle to reach somewhere handier and that mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven. We will send the van to a tricky location without any bother, and for your car that is far better than carrying on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

This is where your M3 comes into it — under 3 miles from West Ham. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will frequently manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power falls away, the idle goes rough, and there may be some smoke.

Take the first exit that's sensible, stop there, and do not restart it to move it. On a longer run — anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city — take it the contamination has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors, and tell us when you phone. It alters what we bring.

A bit about West Ham

West Ham is a suburban area in Hampshire, situated on the riverside with an elevation of around 88 metres. West Ham lies near the cities of Winchester and London, with the former being approximately 16 miles away. West Ham is characterised by its predominantly terraced housing and is surrounded by nearby places such as Winklebury, South Ham, and Buckskin. West Ham has a population of around 4457 residents.

Our job in West Ham, step by step

  • Three things get asked before any quote — your fuel that was put in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • That tank gets drained of everything.
  • Our engineers rinse your fuel lines and clear the filter, and so what is remaining in your system is not what created the problem.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.
  • We start the car and check it runs correctly on clean diesel.

After that it is ready to set off. Long-term damage is very uncommon when it has been caught quickly, and since all of it is done where the car is, it never has to go to a garage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in West Ham is a distinct problem

The problem is not the same, though the opening step is — don't fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the protection the system relies on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes rust and deposits.

We deal with both, and AdBlue removal around West Ham has its own page with the details — including why it is usually the more significant of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in West Ham

Our engineers can't put one price on this page truthfully, as this job is not one job. What moves it:

  • Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the key one.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that proportion.
  • Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us the car, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a firm answer instead of a range. Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel queries from West Ham drivers

At a petrol station in West Ham, can you do a fuel drain there?

A big share of this work takes place there, so yes. We visit Morrisons and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you if we can work there.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres are not the measure. Proportion is, and far more than either, it matters if anything has been run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is if that mixture has been pulled through the fuel system.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Stop somewhere safe, turn off, and leave it off. It is fixable a lot more commonly than people fear, even though driving is what takes the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It is not an alteration, so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a separate era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores. That tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to live with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to take it to a main dealer, as our technicians drain and flush the car wherever it is.

Is your vehicle still with you?

Leave it turned off.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, then let the vehicle stay that way. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. People fear this a lot more than they need to.
