Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in West Liss?

Don't start the motor. If the petrol is still in the tank and the motor has not yet run, a fuel drain is almost always all it takes — and that gets settled in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, across West Liss and the remainder of Hampshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway. We shall show you what the following move is. Ring us — it happens before anything else.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Give a petrol engine diesel and it will generally not run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine for a couple of miles. Most people have that reversed, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not crank it. And having started, do not rely on it: the fuel system is wearing down while you drive.
  • Switching your ignition on frequently primes your system, and priming is what moves petrol out of your tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it burns. Petrol handles the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave your ignition alone.
  • Do not tip diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage as that advice assumes, and topping up clears nothing — it merely leaves you a larger tank of the same mix. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • We'd sooner travel to a difficult location than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay still. Nothing is simpler to sort than a vehicle that has not shifted. On the verge on Station Road, that means hazards on then keep it.
  • The van arriving instead of circling hinges on two things: a postcode starting GU33 6, and whatever is closest to you with a label on it. Get both ready before you dial.
  • What got in, approximately how much, and if the motor has started — those three answers decide the entire call-out. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Draining petrol from the diesel at the forecourt

A fair part of the work is finished at a pump, because that is where it usually begins. If you are still on the forecourt at Esso, that is usually where this drain gets done — we operate on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the site's permission.

Before the engine has run — a forecourt is the single spot the mistake is spotted. Fuel sucked out of the tank and through the filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the motor is switched on and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and your lines as well as the tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and our technicians put it right where the vehicle is. What settles it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

Roll the car out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they normally will. The next motorist gets by the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth the risk.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in West Liss

The awkward part is the bay, not the fuel. Cars either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and now and then a height bar on the way in that settles if a technician can get to you at all — so when you ring from a car park like the one at Lidl, mention how much clearance there's around you and which way round the vehicle is. Those our technicians visit frequently. Should there be no space to work alongside the diesel Renault Clio, it gets moved with the motor off, and not out of pedantry over a few seconds of running: priming occurs at every start, more of the blend leaves that tank for your pump, and two shunts into a better bay have quietly made a worse job of what was just a motor sitting still.

Twenty to nine by Liss Junior School, already late, and the till receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Hazards on, ignition off, ring us. Three miles in your Peugeot 308 feels like nothing, but a diesel pump supplies fuel on demand — and a rushed morning dash needs plenty.

Fine on the way out, gutless on the way back. If that is how the trip to West Liss Playing Field went, that tank is the place to look. Petrol dilutes diesel, and thinner fuel leaks past the precision parts that are meant to build injection pressure — so the farther your Audi A4 went, the less well it held that pressure. Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off then phone us.

Why we are direct about not driving on: the pump rests upstream of the fuel injectors, so whatever a worn pump gives off travels onward with your fuel. Leave the Dacia Duster close to Crossover Youth Centre then ring us.

By this point your tank is not where most of the trouble is. Once a diesel has run, the mix is in your filter, the lines, the pump and its rail — and it doesn't come back out with the tank contents. A diesel Vauxhall Astra that got by St Mary's Church, Liss needs the circuit cleared, not drained.

Areas our vans reach around West Liss

As a residential suburb, West Liss has a routine call, while its neighbours nearby go along on that same journey: Burgates and Liss, Lower Green and Princes Marsh, Liss Forest.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all towns across Hampshire, and the ones named above are simply the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from the list means nothing whatsoever about if our technicians come. Presuming is the mistake to resist, above all on a border or anywhere your satnav gets lost. Ring us and ask.

That map shows the ground this page includes. Our technicians work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of it, and your vehicle doesn't need to come to us.

West Liss: stranded where you stopped

Some people find no sensible spot to pull in at all. If you worked it out after setting off and landed on the verge of Opie Gardens, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards flashing, that is a common call for us and not a rare one.

Stay by the motor if it's safe to sit inside, yet clear of the vehicle when it isn't. Do not restart it to get to a nicer location. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the blend deeper into the system. We'll bring our van to a tricky spot without any bother, and for your car that is a lot better than carrying on.

Driven it already? Pull over, and check this

The Waterlooville Bypass is the one which counts now, and runs under 10 miles from West Liss. A drop in power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, rather than a tidy stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. It changes what we bring, and so mention it when you ring: on a longer run — anything close to the under 25 miles to the nearest city — take it the contamination has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the injectors.

A bit about West Liss

West Liss is a suburban area in Hampshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 69 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. West Liss lies near the villages of Burgates, Liss, and Lower Green, and is approximately 15.5 miles from Chichester. West Liss is also within commuting distance of London, being around 46 miles away. West Liss has a population of around 1106 people.

What comes next when our technicians get to you around West Liss

  • Our engineers ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has the motor run? Those responses shape what the work actually is.
  • Away flows the contaminated fuel.
  • We purge your fuel lines and clear the filter, and so what's remaining in the system is not what started the trouble.
  • The fuel system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
  • Once it's started, our engineers confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

From there, you're ready to pull away. We do all of it wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed quickly, it is very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.

West Liss AdBlue removal is a separate job

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — the engine stays off — whereas the fault underneath it is a different one altogether. The lubrication a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which thins your diesel. Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate West Liss page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in West Liss

One number wouldn't be fair here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much the tank holds.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where the vehicle is, and if our van can sensibly reach and work on it.

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and if it has run. Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel: frequent queries around West Liss

At a petrol station around West Liss, can you do a fuel drain there?

A good share of this work takes place there, so yes. Our technicians visit BP and the other forecourts nearby routinely, with the owner's permission — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you whether we can work there.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It rests on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether your engine has run. What determines how much work is needed is if that mixture has been pulled through the fuel system — since although five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. Now what?

Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. It is fixable a lot more frequently than motorists fear, even though driving is what shifts the issue from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out properly, clearing and purging is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a separate era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores. Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You don't need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Is the vehicle still with you?

Leave the car switched off.

Turn it off somewhere safe then leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best place available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
