Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in West Marsh? Don't Start It

Never fire up the motor. If the fuel is still in that tank and your engine has not yet run, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs — and that gets determined in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they are, across West Marsh and the rest of Lincolnshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. Ring us before anything else happens, so you will hear what follows after that.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Don't crank it. Turned on regardless? Then do not rely on it. Diesel in a petrol motor normally won't run, and so the driver stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away normally, for a couple of miles. Drivers get that reversed. It is not okay — that fuel system is grinding every mile you do.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it combusts it protects — that high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave your ignition be as well: turning it on is commonly sufficient to prime your system, and priming carries petrol from that tank into exactly those components.
  • Don't water down it. Diesel tipped on top gets rid of nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • Stay put if it is sensible to. Hazards on, engine off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Joseph Street, anywhere — an odd spot for us beats a started motor, and nothing is quicker for us to deal with than a motor that never moved.
  • Have your location prepared before you call. A postcode beginning DN31 2 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between a van turning up and a van circling.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three points — what went in, roughly how much, plus if the engine has been started. Those replies decide everything that happens next.

Can petrol be pumped out of a diesel on a forecourt?

A big part of this job ends up done at a forecourt, as that's where it usually starts. The drain typically gets done there and then. Still on the forecourt at JET? Given the site's consent, that's a place our engineers work, and often.

At a garage, this is halted with your engine never started, and nowhere else does that. The few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the keys determine how much requires flushing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and the filter need rinsing as well as that tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still sort it out where the car sits.

Staff will generally help out pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get by. Take the assistance. Starting it over four car lengths? Don't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in West Marsh

Tell us this much and we can work with it: a diesel Renault Megane, a couple of litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, shut off at Lidl now. Time gone by is not the thing our engineers need. Fuel drawn by the pump is.

Hazards on. Ignition off. Ring us. It's twenty to nine outside Macaulay Primary Academy, you are late, and the receipt says unleaded — and even though three miles in your BMW 3 Series seems like nothing, fuel gets delivered to demand, and a rushed dash needs plenty of that.

Do not risk it. The trip home from Cromwell Social Club is entirely possible, which is exactly the issue — a weakened tank doesn't stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just wears the components the fuel is supposed to protect. Phone us, then let the Peugeot 308 stay where it is.

Clattering, a lumpy idle, white smoke, a throttle gone dead. That's a wrongly fuelled diesel Ford Fiesta telling you what is wrong. Turn off where you have stopped, by Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses or anywhere else, and don't start the vehicle to find a better location.

Someone sure of themselves will tell you to drain the car and put clean diesel in. Only half right, that. Try it on a diesel Mercedes GLC by Elite Koi and the motor will start — which is precisely why it sounds like sense. Here is the catch: there is petrol left in the fuel filter and the feed lines, and the first thing your engine does is pull it back through your pump a second time. Draining a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left your tank. Ring us. The system gets cleaned, your filter comes off where there's one worth removing, and that is what separates a fixed motor from one that just starts.

Places our team reach in West Marsh

As a residential suburb, West Marsh has a regular call, whilst its neighbours round about come along on that same journey: Littlefield and Yarborough, Grimsby and Pyewipe, Prince Albert Gardens.

There are separate pages for most towns across Lincolnshire, and the ones listed above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being absent from that list means nothing at all about whether we come. Contact us and enquire rather than presuming — county lines particularly, and wherever a satnav can misread.

The map outlines the area this page spans. Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: all of that is territory we serve, and none of it asks the vehicle to come to us.

West Marsh: broken down wherever you parked

Some drivers have no sensible spot to pull in at all. A routine call for us and not an odd one: noticed after setting off, finished up along the verge on Lawrence Street or at a lay-by with the hazard lights going.

Whether you sit beside your car or stand away from it rests on if sitting in it looks safe. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that mixture further into the system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. Carrying on does the car far more harm than our van coming out to a difficult spot, and that's no problem for us.

Driven it already? Stop, and check this

Your M180 is the road which matters here, and runs under 15 miles from West Marsh. A misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they come are generally a loss of power, an uneven idle and some smoke rather than a clean stop.

Don't restart it to reposition. Pull off at the first safe exit and switch off. It alters what our technicians bring, so mention it when you call: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

Where's West Marsh?

West Marsh is a coastal suburban area in northern Lincolnshire, situated near the mouth of the Humber Estuary. West Marsh lies close to several nearby places, including Littlefield and Yarborough, and is within commuting distance of Kingston upon Hull. West Marsh has a relatively low elevation of around 2 metres above sea level, and its population is approximately 8792 people, predominantly living in terraced housing.

What follows when our technicians get to you in West Marsh

  • Our technicians establish what went in, how much, and if your engine has run. The answers alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing.
  • We clear your tank of all the contaminated fuel.
  • Fuel lines are purged through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • Our engineers turn it on and check it runs properly on new diesel.

That leaves it ready to set off. Our technicians do everything wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed soon, it is very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around West Marsh is a different problem

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — the engine remains off — while this problem beneath it's a different one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the lubrication the fuel system depends on. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own West Marsh page. Both are ours to deal with.

West Marsh pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

What shifts the figure is set out below, since the job is not one job and our technicians cannot frankly put a single figure on this page.

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that ratio.
  • Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there safely?

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run. Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Petrol in diesel: common questions in West Marsh

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in West Marsh?

Yes — forecourts are where a big share of this takes place. Our engineers visit Shell and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the station's permission — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether we can work there.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether your motor has run matters a lot more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mixture drawn through it.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, and keep it off. Driving is what takes the problem from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it's salvageable much more often than motorists assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and flushing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to remain off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has thinned isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate fault. So no. Later on? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the car is, we drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

Waiting next to it?

Your engine remains off.

If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere safe, turn it off then leave it off. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.
