Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in West Street

Never fire up your engine. While the fuel is still inside your tank and your engine has not been started, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes — and that's determined in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, all over West Street and the rest of Kent, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. Call us and then our technicians will tell you what follows from here before you attempt any more.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Give a petrol engine diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it moves off — fine for several miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't start the vehicle. And once started, never depend on it: your fuel system is wearing down while you drive.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it ignites it greases — your injection pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off too: switching it on is frequently enough to prime your system, and priming carries petrol from the tank into precisely those parts.
  • Never put diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage as that guidance assumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it merely hands you a fuller tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • A vehicle that has never moved is the easiest one to handle, so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on West Street? Hazards on, and keep it there. An odd place suits us better than a started engine.
  • Before you call, gather your location. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode that starts ME3 7 — that is what decides whether the technician shows up or circles.
  • Three replies decide the whole job: the liquid you tipped in, the ballpark amount involved, and whether anything has been turning since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

Pumps are where this work usually begins, and where a fair share of it ends. The drain generally takes place there and then. Still on the forecourt at JET? Given the site's permission, that's somewhere we work, and routinely.

Before your motor has run — a garage is the only location this ends up spotted. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from that tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a catastrophe, and we can still put it right where it stands. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for the key.

Roll it out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they usually will. The next customer gets past the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth a restart.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in West Street

Do our technicians reach your side of West Street?

Being a residential suburb, West Street sees a routine visit, while the places round about come along on the same run: Cliffe and Cooling Street, Cooling and Church Street, Cliffe Woods.

Our engineers do come. Those names above are just the closest neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of towns across Kent, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Near a border, or somewhere a satnav can't find? Contact us and check rather than guessing.

That map shows the patch the page includes. The lot is territory we cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You don't drive your car anywhere.

Each restart primes the lines and pulls more petrol through the fuel filter then into your pump. So a wrongly fuelled diesel Audi A4 on the zig-zags by St Helen's Church of England Primary School, Cliffe is an inconvenience, whereas the same vehicle started three more times to be helpful is a fuel system rather than a tank. Someone will tell you to move it out of the gateway and fix it later. Please don't. Stay put, let people grumble, then ring us.

You head off at the end, once we have fired it up and confirmed it runs correctly on fresh diesel, with the system bled. Before that, in the car park by The Six Bells, the polluted fuel comes out of the tank, the fuel lines get rinsed and the filter comes off where your Ford Focus has a replaceable one. It all starts with three questions when our technicians get to your car: what got in, how much of it, and whether it has been fired up since.

Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the precision parts it passes through, and petrol dilutes it. That is the whole process, and it accounts for the ordinary The Buttway Recreational Area call: a diesel Peugeot 3008 that went out there without a murmur and came back down on power, uneven at idle, perhaps smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it needs the fuel to hold pressure, not just to burn — so when the fuel dilutes, pressure that should build and stay built starts escaping past gaps instead, and the engine gets a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was built about. None of that is your engine failing, which is the bit worth hearing: it is the fuel no longer behaving like diesel, and it stops when the fuel is corrected.

Rarely the issue, the spot. On-street is the most common spot our engineers work, and a cramped parking bay is far preferable to a car that has been driven somewhere more handy. What does help, when you call from near St Helen's, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether our van can stand alongside without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then the BMW X1 gets cleared, the filter changed where a usable one exists, your lines purged and fresh fuel put through the whole circuit — since by now the worst of that is in your lines, not the tank.

A few streets, then it stopped. Throttle dead, idle ragged, and your diesel Volvo XC60 is parked up near The Pinnacle. Your engine is not giving up — that softness is fuel that will not build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, and so cars like yours usually get driven once more before somebody picks up the phone. Please don't. Off, and phone us.

West Street: stuck wherever you parked

The opportunity to stop anywhere safe does not come to everybody. If you worked it out after setting off and ended up along the verge beside Buttway Lane, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards flashing, that's a normal call for us instead of an odd one.

Safe there? Sit beside it. Not okay? Move out and clear of it. Do not restart it to reach a safer place. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that mix deeper into the system. However awkward the spot, it's no bother for us to get to it, and that is much better for the car than pressing on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Here is where your M2 matters, under 5 miles away from West Street. A wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they appear are generally lost power, a lumpy idle and smoke instead of a neat stop.

Get off at the first safe exit, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to reposition. On a longer run — anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you phone. It alters what our engineers bring.

About West Street

West Street is a suburban area in Kent, situated near the coast and approximately 26.8 miles from London. West Street has a population of around 1440 people and is characterised by semi-detached housing. West Street is located near several nearby places, including Cliffe, Cooling Street, and Cooling, and is close to the city of Southend-on-Sea, which is 11 miles away.

What comes next when our technicians arrive with you around West Street

  • Our technicians ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has your engine run? Those replies shape what the work actually is.
  • The tank is cleared completely.
  • Fuel lines are purged through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once new diesel is in.
  • It's fired up with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it's running correctly.

At that point it's ready to pull away. There is no need to go to a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it's caught quickly, lasting damage is very unusual.

A distinct matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in West Street

The issue isn't the same, though the opening instruction is — don't start it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol dilutes the diesel and removes the lubrication the fuel system depends on. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

AdBlue removal in West Street has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's usually the more significant of the two. Our engineers handle both.

West Street pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Our engineers can't put one number on this page frankly, since this job is not one job. What moves it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much your tank holds.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight rather than as a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is good for that.

Questions we get about petrol in diesel in West Street

I'm on a forecourt around West Street. Can you drain it here?

A big share of this work takes place there, so yes. Often, provided the site consents: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something we answer straight away.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that mixture sucked through it.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop somewhere safe, switch off, then leave the car off. It's fixable a lot more frequently than people assume, even though driving is what takes the problem from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and rinsing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to stay off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. The pump still has to put up with it, since your tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You do not need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

Is your vehicle still with you?

Keep the engine switched off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.
