Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in West Vale?

Don't start your engine. If the fuel is still inside that tank and your engine has not turned over, a drain is nearly always all it requires — and that is determined in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, throughout West Vale and the remainder of West Yorkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway. Phone and then our engineers can explain what follows from here before you do any more.

What to try now about petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will typically not run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine for a few miles. People have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't fire it up. And if started, never trust it: the fuel system is wearing while you drive.
  • Flicking your ignition on usually primes that system, and priming is what moves petrol out of that tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol manages the burning and none of the protecting. Leave your ignition off.
  • Never pour diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that guidance presumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it merely hands you a larger tank of the same mixture. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Stay still if it's sensible to. Hazards on, motor off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Green Lane, anywhere — an awkward location for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is quicker for us to sort out than a vehicle that never moved.
  • Keep your location prepared before you ring. A postcode starting HX4 8 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between a van showing up and our van circling.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three things — what went in, about how much, plus if the engine has been started. Those responses determine all that follows.

Clearing petrol from a diesel on the forecourt

Plenty of this job starts at a pump, which means a fair chunk of that is done there. We work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the site's agreement, and so if you are still at JET that's typically where the drain gets done.

The forecourt is the only spot this is spotted before the engine has run. Our technicians can still deal with it where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been started and moved there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a disaster, but the flush then has to go past that tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the key are what determine that.

Attendants will generally chip in pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get through. Welcome the help. Firing it to shift four car lengths is not.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in West Vale

Every start primes the fuel system and sucks more of that mixture out of your tank and on to your pump — which is why a vehicle shuffled twice into a better space has silently grown into a harder job than one left just where it stopped. So when our technicians can't work next to your diesel Renault Megane, our engineers move the vehicle without running it. None of that is fussiness about a handful of seconds of running. Car parks like the one outside Morrisons our engineers visit frequently, and your fuel is rarely the tricky part: the bay is. Motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height limit at the entrance deciding if a technician can reach you at all. Tell us how penned in you are, and which way your car faces.

How far, and how hard? The second of those counts more than the first, and so have both ready. The Skoda Octavia will have seemed entirely usual on the way back from West Vale Academy — they all do, and that's the snag. Diesel into a petrol vehicle generally won't run at all: the motorist stops, and so does the wear. Petrol into a diesel fires up, idles, moves off like nothing happened, while your high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the protection the fuel should be giving it. No warning arrives, because behind the wheel nothing seems wrong.

Simple job, this one — till somebody drives it home. A diesel Ford Focus sitting at Craft with petrol in the tank loses nothing by standing there overnight, so park the car and call us once it is light. Expect a question about that run there, though. Short and cold is exactly where petrol fails to burn, and what will not burn can work past the rings and into the oil.

Here's the entire mechanism. Diesel needs enough body to seal the fine clearances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That is it. Which explains the usual Clay House Park call — a diesel Peugeot 3008, out there without fuss and back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; weakened, it leaks past those gaps instead of building, and delivery comes weaker, later, less even than the motor was engineered about. Not a failing motor, though. Fuel that has stopped acting like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

Why so direct about leaving the keys alone? Since the pump is before the fuel injectors, and a worn-out one sends whatever it sheds on with the fuel. Ring us. Leave the BMW X1 near Kingdom Hall West Vale Congregation.

Coverage near West Vale

Being a residential suburb, West Vale sees a frequent call, while the villages round about go with it on that same round: Lindwell and Little Bradley, Cross Hill and Sunnybank, Greetland.

We still come. Those places above are just the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for most places around West Yorkshire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Contact us and check rather than presuming — county lines particularly, and anywhere your phone may misread.

Check our map for the patch included here. Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: every bit of it is ground our technicians serve, and none of it requires your car to travel to us.

West Vale: stuck where you stopped

Some drivers get no sensible place to stop at all. Set off, then realised? Finished up on the verge beside Elizabeth Street, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights on? That's a routine call here. Not an odd one.

Wait with the vehicle when it is sensible to sit there, and clear of the car if it's not. Don't fire up your motor to nurse it somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mix further into the fuel system. However awkward the location, it's no bother for us to get to it, and that's a lot better for the vehicle than driving on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

This is where the M62 comes in — under 3 miles away from West Vale. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is some smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a clean stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

The next sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. On a longer run — anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors, and tell us when you call. It alters what our engineers bring.

West Vale itself

West Vale is a suburban area in West Yorkshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 82 metres, with terraced housing being the predominant type of accommodation. West Vale lies approximately 8 miles from Bradford and is close to nearby places such as Lindwell and Little Bradley. West Vale is part of the larger urban area surrounding Bradford, but retains its own distinct character. West Vale is located 167 miles north of London, in the Yorkshire and the Humber region.

What our technicians do when we get to you in West Vale

  • The answers alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what went in, how much of it, and whether your motor has run.
  • Out comes the tainted fuel.
  • Our engineers clean your fuel lines and clean the filter, and so what's remaining in your system is not what started the trouble.
  • Your system gets bled, on clean diesel.
  • It is run with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it's running properly.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away. Everything is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around West Vale?

Don't fire it up: that opening rule holds whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the fault itself. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

AdBlue removal in West Vale has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's often the more serious of the two. Our technicians cover both.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in West Vale

We cannot put one figure on this page truthfully, since the job is not one job. What moves it:

  • Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the big one.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that proportion.
  • The kind of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for our van.

Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and whether your engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Not urgent, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Things our engineers hear about petrol in diesel around West Vale

I am on a forecourt around West Vale. Can you drain it here?

A big share of this work gets done there, so yes. Our engineers work at Morrisons and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the owner's permission — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you whether we can work there.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Proportion decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is if that mixture has been pulled through the system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Turn off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving moves the trouble along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really helpful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain and flush carried out correctly is not a modification and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a different problem from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back. After that? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

You do not need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Do not turn it back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting it after that. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.
