Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Westfield

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, throughout Westfield and the remainder of Cumbria. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. When your engine has not turned over and the fuel is still inside your tank, a drain is nearly always all it requires, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much was put in. Ring us and then our team shall tell you what follows after that before you attempt much else.

The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will typically fail to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it pulls away — all right for a few miles. Drivers have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So never fire it up. And having started, do not depend on it: your fuel system is wearing while you drive.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it burns it greases — the high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave your ignition be as well: flicking it on is often enough to prime the system, and priming carries petrol from the tank into just those components.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage the way that advice implies — so don't add diesel on top to dilute it. Type is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that has not moved is the simplest one to handle, and our team would sooner drive to a tricky spot than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Beach Street, switch the hazards on then leave it there.
  • Before you dial, work out your location. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting CA14 3 — that is what determines whether the van shows up or circles.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, approximately how much, and also if the car has run. Those three facts settle the whole visit.

Quarter past eight, a fast fill-up on the drive in, and you realise close to eleven — by that point the diesel Volkswagen Golf has been parked outside Workington for three hours. Phone then leave the car just where it stands. The trip in is the bit that is key here, since diesel does two jobs on its way through the engine: it combusts, and before it combusts it greases the injection pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. So those couple of miles were driven with your pump labouring on a liquid that had shed most of the protection it is designed around — which is why the question our technicians ask is how many miles you went, not how long the motor has been sitting.

How far, and how hard? The second of those matters more than the first, and so have both ready. Your Ford Focus will have seemed perfectly usual on the way back from Westfield Nursery and Primary School — they all do, and that's the snag. Diesel into a petrol motor usually won't run at all: the driver stops, and so does the harm. Petrol into a diesel fires up, idles, moves off like nothing happened, while the high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the protection your fuel should be giving it. No warning arrives, because behind the wheel nothing looks wrong.

The components that should be getting oiled are grinding instead, and the motor gives no sign of it: a diesel on a diluted tank starts and drives off just fine. Chance the drive home from JJ's Club? Don't. Ring us and leave the BMW 5 Series where it sits.

Strange spots are where this occurs most, and the reason is mechanical instead of slapdash: the smaller petrol nozzle goes into a current diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all. Fuelled up near St Mary without thinking, in a diesel Kia Sportage you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anybody realises, and miles is what settles how much petrol gets to the fuel injectors.

A few streets, then it stopped. Throttle dead, idle lumpy, and the diesel Skoda Superb is parked up by Kingdom Hall Of Jehova's Witness. Your engine isn't giving up — that softness is fuel that will not build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, so cars like yours typically get driven a second time before somebody picks up the phone. Please don't. Off, and phone us.

Can petrol be taken from a diesel on the forecourt?

Forecourts are where this job often starts, and where a good share of that ends. Still at the nearest petrol station? Then that is generally where it happens. Garage forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the station.

At a forecourt, it gets stopped with the engine never run, and no place else manages it. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from the tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a calamity, and we can still put it right where it stands. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as that tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for the keys.

The staff will generally happily move the car clear of the petrol pump so the next motorist can get by. It is worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth a restart.

Can our engineers cover your part of Westfield?

Westfield is a residential suburb, and so our team head out to it and to anywhere by it on the same journeys: Mossbay, Moorclose, Salterbeck, Workington and High Harrington.

Our technicians still come. Those places above are merely the closest neighbours, and a page exists for most places across Cumbria, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Near a border, or somewhere your phone can't find? Contact us to enquire rather than presuming.

The ground this page spans is on this map. Our technicians work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of it, and your car doesn't need to travel to us.

Broken down at the roadside near Westfield

Not everybody finds a decent place to pull over. Set off, then twigged? Ended up along the verge beside Casson Road, or sat in some lay-by with the hazard lights going? That's a common call here. Not a rare one.

Fine there? Wait beside it. Not safe? Get out and clear of it. Never start it up to reach a better location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mix deeper into the system. However tricky the spot, it is no trouble for us to get to it, and that is a lot better for your car than carrying on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the motor has moved

The local Southwaite Services Northbound is the road that counts now, and lies under 50 miles from Westfield. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a tidy stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Do not start it to reposition. Come off at the next sensible exit then turn off. Long drive? Anything approaching the under 50 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the petrol. Say that on the call, as it affects what goes in our van.

Where's Westfield?

Westfield is a suburban area located on the coast of Cumbria, with an elevation of 14 metres above sea level. Westfield sits near the towns of Mossbay, Moorclose, and Salterbeck, and is approximately 30 miles from the city of Carlisle. Westfield has a population of around 4660 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Westfield is also situated about 258 miles northwest of London, in the North West region of England.

What follows when our technicians arrive with you around Westfield

  • Three things get checked before any price — your fuel that got in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • Your tank is drained completely.
  • What is left in the fuel system should not be what created the trouble, and so the lines get cleaned and the fuel filter cleared.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.
  • Our engineers fire it up and make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.

From there, you are ready to drive away. There's no need for a workshop at any stage, because the work is all done where your car is, and when it is noticed quickly, lasting damage is very rare.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Westfield is a separate matter

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first rule is the same — never crank it — but the problem is not. Petrol thins the diesel and takes away the lubrication the fuel system relies on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and residue.

We deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Westfield has its own page with the detail — including why it's usually the more serious of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Westfield?

What changes the price is set out below, because the job isn't one job and our engineers can't truthfully put a single number on this page.

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that proportion.
  • Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a van can safely get to the vehicle and work on it, which rests on where the vehicle is.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range. Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Questions our technicians get about petrol in diesel in Westfield

I am on a forecourt in Westfield. Can you drain the car here?

Plenty of what our engineers do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Our engineers visit Morrisons and the other forecourts locally routinely, with the station's permission — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mixture pulled through it.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What next?

Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, and leave the vehicle off. It's recoverable a lot more commonly than people assume, even though driving is what takes the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't an alteration and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. The pump still has to cope with it, since that tank still has petrol in it later on.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

Still with the car?

Do not turn it on again.

Turn it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it. A stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more often than drivers expect.
