Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Westford?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, across Westford and the remainder of Highland. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. While the motor has not yet turned over and the petrol is still sitting in the tank, a drain is almost always all it needs, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. One call our way will be enough: our team shall show you what happens from here. Try it straight away.

Your next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will generally fail to run at all, so the person stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine enough for several miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not crank it. And having started, never rely on it: your fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it ignites it lubricates — your injection pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave your ignition off also: turning it on is usually enough to prime your system, and priming moves petrol from your tank into just those components.
  • Never pour diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage as that advice assumes, and topping up clears nothing — it only hands you a bigger tank of the same blend. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • We would sooner get to an odd spot than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay put. Nothing is simpler to sort than a vehicle that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Westford, that means hazards on and leave the car.
  • Our van turning up instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode beginning IV17 0, and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it. Keep both prepared before you call.
  • What got in, roughly how much, and also whether your car has run — the three answers decide the full call-out. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

The journey in is what pushed weakened diesel through your pump. Standing still has pulled nothing. Petrol in a diesel Renault Megane, left outside Alness all day, waits harmless in your tank while it waits. Ring us first — before the keys go in.

Twenty to nine at the gates of the local primary school, running late, and the till receipt in your hand says unleaded. Hazards on, engine off, phone us. Three miles in the BMW 3 Series seems like nothing, but a diesel pump supplies fuel to demand — and a frantic morning drive asks for plenty.

Do not risk it. The journey home from the pub in the village is quite possible, which is precisely the trouble — a weakened tank does not stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just wears the components the fuel is supposed to lubricate. Phone, and let the Nissan Qashqai stay where it sits.

Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off then ring us. Happy on the way out to Coulhill Wood, gutless on the way back? Then look at your tank. Petrol dilutes diesel; runnier fuel leaks past the precision components that build injection pressure; and the further your diesel Audi A3 travelled, the less of that pressure it held.

What happens next is the issue. The motor immediately pulls the petrol left resting in your filter and the feed lines back round through the pump a second time, as draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it then put new diesel in, somebody confident will tell you — and that advice is half right, as do it to a diesel Peugeot 208 parked up, West End Community Centre say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound reasonable. Call us instead. Our technicians flush your system and take the filter off where the car has a workable one, and that is the difference between your car being fixed and the car only starting.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Westford

On a forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel

The work kicks off at a forecourt, mostly. Quite often the work wraps up on site too. Our technicians work on garage forecourts regularly, with the owner's consent, so if you are still at Morrisons that's normally where the drain takes place.

At a garage, the mistake is spotted with your motor never fired, and no place else does it. Our technicians can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been switched on and driven there, and that drew fuel through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a calamity, although the flush then has to go past that tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for your key are what settle that.

The staff will usually help you roll it away from the pump so the next driver can get by. That is worth doing. Starting the car for four vehicle lengths? Don't.

Westford plus the villages beside it

Westford is a residential suburb, and so our technicians are out to the town and to the places near it on those same journeys: Burnside, Firhill, Alness, Shillinghill and Dalmore.

Our technicians still come. The names above are merely the closest neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of locations across Highland, so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Near a border, or anywhere your satnav struggles with? Ring us and enquire rather than guessing.

The patch the page includes is on the map. Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is territory we work on, and none of it requires the vehicle to travel to us.

Stopped at the kerb somewhere around Westford?

The chance to pull over anywhere safe doesn't fall to everyone. Set off, then twigged? Finished up on the verge beside Corkscrew Road, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazards on? That is a normal call here. Not an odd one.

Whether you stay beside the car or keep clear of it turns on whether staying there is sensible. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that mixture further into your fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why your engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier. We will take our van to a difficult place without any bother, and for the car that is much better than carrying on.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

over 50 miles from Westford, the local M90 is what counts now. A drop in power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they come, instead of a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Come off at the next safe exit, turn off, and do not restart the vehicle to move it. Long drive? Anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the mixture. Say that on the phone, as it alters what goes in our van.

Where's Westford?

Westford is a coastal suburban area in the Scottish Highlands, situated near the city of Inverness and close to the Moray Firth. Westford has a relatively low elevation of 24 metres and is surrounded by other residential areas such as Burnside and Firhill. Westford is characterised by its predominance of terraced housing, which reflects the typical architectural style of many Scottish suburban areas. Westford is located approximately 14.9 miles from Inverness, the capital of the Highlands.

Once our technicians get to you around Westford: what we do

  • Our engineers ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has your motor run? Those responses change what the work actually is.
  • Away comes the polluted mixture.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later is not the thing that started the problem.
  • Our engineers pour new diesel in and bleed your system.
  • It's started with fresh diesel in it, and we confirm that it is running smoothly.

After that it's ready to drive away. Permanent damage is very rare when it has been spotted quickly, and since all of it is done where the car is, it never needs to be taken to a garage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Westford is a distinct problem

Never start it: that opening instruction applies whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the fault itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the protection the system depends on. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Westford page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Westford?

What changes the figure is set out below, because the job is not one job and we cannot truthfully put a single number on this page.

  • This is the big one: whether your motor has been started, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that proportion.
  • The kind of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the vehicle is, and whether a technician can safely reach and work on it.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and whether your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is good for that.

Questions we get about petrol in diesel in Westford

I'm on a forecourt in Westford. Can you drain the car on the spot?

A large portion of this work gets done there, so yes. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's consent we visit Gleaner and the other forecourts around town all the time.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether your motor has run matters a lot more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mixture pulled through it.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?

Stop somewhere sensible, switch off, and keep it off. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of that tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable far more regularly than people fear.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, draining and cleaning is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a separate fault and it doesn't put back what petrol has thinned. Later on? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

There's no need to take it to a dealership, because our engineers drain and flush your car wherever it is.

Is the vehicle still with you?

Switched off is how the car stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car later on. This is recoverable from much more frequently than motorists expect, and a parked, cold motor is the best place to be in.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining around Westford and across Highland.
