Westhorp: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
Don't fire up the engine. While the petrol is still sitting in your tank and the engine has not run, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes — and that's decided in the next few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, across Westhorp and the remainder of Northamptonshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. Phone before everything else starts, and you'll learn what comes after that.
The first five steps: petrol in a diesel
- Do not fire it up. Fired up regardless? Then don't rely on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle typically won't run, so the motorist stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off fine, for several miles. People get that reversed. It's not fine — your fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
- Leave your ignition alone also. Diesel performs two jobs: it burns, and before it ignites it greases that injection pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Flicking the ignition on is usually sufficient to prime the system, which draws this petrol out of that tank then into precisely those parts.
- That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It will not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
- Stay put if it is wise to. Hazards on, engine off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Westhorpe Lane, anywhere — a tricky place for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is easier for us to handle than a motor that never shifted.
- Check where you are before phoning. A postcode starting NN11 6, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than turning up.
- What was put in, about how much, and also whether the engine has run — the three replies determine the full call-out. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.
Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, parked at Banbury since first thing? The afternoon has lost you nothing — fuel in a tank is inert. It was the run in that sucked diluted diesel through your pump. Phone us before you fetch the vehicle.
A diesel Peugeot 308 parked in the parking area at The Cross Tree holding a tank of petrol in it is an easy job, right up till someone takes it home. Leave the vehicle there overnight and phone next morning. Nothing deteriorates whilst it sits. What we'll ask about is if that run there was brief and cold, since that's where petrol is least likely to burn properly — and anything that does not burn can slip past the piston rings and into the engine oil.
Three things help when you call from near Byfield Memorial Cross: which side the filler is on, whether our van can stand beside without blocking the road, and whether the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common place our engineers work, so the spot itself is seldom the problem — we would much rather deal with a cramped parking space than with a motor that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We will drain the Audi A3, change the fuel filter where there's a workable one, flush the fuel lines then put clean fuel through the entire circuit, as by this point the worst of it is waiting in your lines instead of in your tank.
A vehicle you collected two days ago gets driven further before anybody sees anything, which is the hire and courtesy fault in one sentence — and how far it went is what settles the quantity of petrol getting to the injectors. Nothing sloppy about the mistake itself: a current diesel filler neck accepts the slimmer petrol nozzle with practically no resistance, and so strange places see most of these. Call us from wherever you are, near Byfield Village Hall or not, and we'll come to the BMW 1 Series.
That softness is your fuel failing to build pressure fully, not your engine packing up — and with no dashboard light for it, cars in that position typically get driven a second time before anybody calls. Don't. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone soft, idle turned ragged, and a diesel Vauxhall Astra now sitting near Byfield Bowls Club. Switch the vehicle off and call us.
Can petrol be drained out of your diesel at the forecourt?
Plenty of the job starts at a forecourt, meaning a large share of that is finished there. Our technicians work on garage forecourts routinely, with the owner's consent, so if you are still at Texaco that's typically where the drain happens.
Before the engine has started — a garage is the one spot the mistake gets stopped. Our technicians can still put it right where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been switched on and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the filter and into the high-pressure pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a catastrophe, but the flush then has to reach past the tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for your key are what settle that.
The staff will usually offer to wheel it clear of the pump so the next customer can get by. That's worth doing. Cranking it just to shift four car lengths is not.
Coverage around Westhorp
The same rounds take us to Byfield, Church End, West Farndon, Hinton and Aston le Walls as well as Westhorp, which is a residential suburb.
Our engineers still come. Those names above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for most locations across Northamptonshire, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Assuming is the mistake to avoid, especially on a boundary or somewhere your satnav struggles. Phone to check.
Look at our map for the ground covered on this page. We operate roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of that, and the vehicle doesn't need to come to us.
Westhorp: broken down wherever you parked
Not everyone gets a chance to stop anywhere sensible. Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge beside Bell Lane since you worked it out after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it is the normal kind.
Okay right there? Sit by it. Not okay? Get out and clear of it. Do not fire up your engine to limp the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mixture further into the system. A technician coming to an inconvenient place is no problem for us, and it's far better for the vehicle than pressing on.
Already run it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles
Here is where the M40 comes in, under 10 miles away from Westhorp. A wrongly fuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, while the symptoms when they appear are generally a drop in power, a lumpy idle and smoke rather than a clean stop.
Get off at the first safe junction, switch off, and don't start the vehicle to reposition. On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors, and mention it when you call. It affects what we bring.
Westhorp itself
Westhorp is a suburban area in Northamptonshire, situated inland at an elevation of around 154 metres. Westhorp lies approximately 19.5 miles from Coventry and 66.5 miles from London, with nearby places including Byfield, Church End, and West Farndon. Westhorp has a population of around 999 people and is characterised by predominantly detached housing.
Our visit around Westhorp, step by step
- We ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has your motor run? Those answers change what the work really is.
- The tainted fuel is drawn from that tank.
- Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later on is not the thing that created the problem.
- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.
- We turn it on and confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.
At that point it is ready to set off. Our technicians do everything wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never has to go to a garage, and if it has been caught early, it's very unusual for there to be permanent damage.
AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Westhorp?
AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — your motor remains off — while the issue underneath it's a separate one altogether. Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.
Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Westhorp page. Both are ours to handle.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Westhorp?
What moves the figure is set out below, as this job is not one job and we can't honestly put a single figure on this page.
- Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the key one.
- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that ratio.
- Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there sensibly?
A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and isn't time-critical, is fine too.
Things our engineers hear about petrol in diesel around Westhorp
Fuel drains on a Westhorp petrol station forecourt
Yes, and it is where a fair share of this work happens. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you if we can work there. With the owner's permission our technicians attend another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts around town all the time.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
It rests on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether the engine has run. What determines how much work is needed is if that mixture has been drawn through the fuel system — since although five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one, either way that's the question.
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it
Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. It's recoverable much more frequently than people assume, even though driving is what moves the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
It is not a change, and so a drain then flush carried out properly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.
Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?
No. It belongs to a distinct issue from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind restores. Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
Not at all. We drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a franchised dealer.
Standing next to it?
The motor remains off.
Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle afterwards. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.
