Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Westlea? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, all over Westlea and the rest of Durham. The first thing to do is not to start your engine. When the engine has not turned over and the petrol is still inside that tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much went in. Our team can explain what the next stage will be. Ring us — it comes ahead of everything else.

What to do first about petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will typically fail to run at all, so the person stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it moves off — all right for a few miles. Most people have that reversed, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So never start it. And having started, do not trust it: the fuel system is grinding while you drive.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it burns it protects — your high-pressure fuel pump, the injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off too: flicking it on is usually all it takes to prime that system, and priming pulls petrol from your tank into precisely those parts.
  • Do not dilute it. Diesel added on top removes nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • We'd rather get to a tricky place than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is easier to deal with than a vehicle that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Holyhead Close, that means hazards on and keep the vehicle.
  • Get your whereabouts ready before you dial. A postcode that starts SR7 8 and whatever is closest to you with a name on it is the difference between a van turning up and our van circling.
  • What got in, roughly how many litres, and whether your car has fired — these three replies settle the entire job. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

The trip in is what pulled diluted diesel through your pump. Sitting still has drawn nothing. Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Passat, sitting at Seaham all day, waits idle in that tank while it waits. Ring us first — before your keys turn.

Three replies settle most of the work: what went in, approximately how much, and whether the motor has run since. We ask for them when we get to your car in the car park by The Mallard. Then the polluted mix comes out of the tank, the fuel lines are rinsed, and where your Nissan Qashqai has a replaceable filter, it comes off. After fresh diesel is in and the fuel system bled, we start it and confirm it runs correctly before you set off.

Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol dilutes diesel, and runnier fuel leaks past the precision parts that are supposed to build that pressure, so the further a diesel Dacia Duster travelled, the less well it held. Normal on the way out and flat on the way back is how the run to Malvern Field went, then, and the tank is where to look. Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off then phone us.

Emptying your Mercedes E-Class, changing the fuel filter where there is a workable one, purging the lines, putting fresh fuel through the entire system: that's the job, and it is shaped by the worst of it resting in the fuel lines rather than in the tank by this point. Three things help when you call from near Eastlea Community Centre — which side the filler is on, whether our van can park alongside without blocking the road, and whether the motor has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual place we work, so the spot itself is seldom the problem. A cramped parking bay is better than a vehicle driven somewhere more convenient.

Unfamiliar spots are where this occurs most, and the reason is mechanical rather than careless: the smaller petrol nozzle slides into a current diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all. Fuelled up by Independent Methodist Church without thinking, in a diesel Vauxhall Astra you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anyone realises, and mileage is what decides how much petrol reaches your injectors.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Westlea

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

A large part of the work gets finished at the pump, since that is where it usually kicks off. The drain normally takes place right there. Still on the forecourt at Esso? Given the owner's permission, that is a place we work, and often.

The forecourt is the only spot this gets caught before your motor has run. Fuel sucked out of the tank and through the filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the engine is fired up and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the fuel filter and your lines as well as your tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and our technicians sort it out where the vehicle sits. What determines it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

Push the car out of the way if the staff offer, and they generally will. The next customer gets through the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth the risk.

Places our vans cover around Westlea

The same journeys take us to Eastlea, Deneside, Dalton-le-Dale, Northlea and Seaton as well as Westlea, which is a residential suburb.

Not on that list? That means nothing. The names above are only the closest few, and nearly all places around Durham have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Near the boundary, or somewhere your satnav can't find? Ring us and ask rather than guessing.

Check this map for the patch covered on this page. The lot is ground we serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never drive the car anywhere.

Westlea: broken down where you stopped

Not everybody finds a suitable spot to stop. If you worked it out after setting off and landed along the verge of Eastdene Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards going, that is a normal call for us rather than a rare one.

Clear of the vehicle when it is not wise to sit there, by it when it is. Don't restart it to get to a nicer location. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that blend deeper into your fuel system. A van coming to a tricky location is no bother for us, and it's far better for the car than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the motor has moved

The A1(M) is the road that matters here, and it lies under 10 miles from Westlea. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Never restart it to reposition. Pull off at the first safe exit then switch off. Presume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything close to the under 5 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through your filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you phone. What our technicians bring alters.

Westlea itself

Westlea is a suburban area in County Durham, situated near the coast and approximately 4.8 miles from Sunderland. Westlea has a population of around 4997 people and is characterised by semi-detached housing. Westlea sits at an elevation of 92 metres, overlooking the surrounding landscape. Westlea is also close to nearby places such as Eastlea, Deneside, and Dalton-le-Dale.

What we do when our technicians arrive with you in Westlea

  • Our engineers ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has the engine run? Those replies alter what the work actually is.
  • Our engineers empty the tank of the contaminated mixture.
  • What is remaining in the fuel system should not be what created the trouble, so the lines get purged and the filter cleared.
  • The fuel system gets primed, on clean diesel.
  • It's started with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians check that it is running smoothly.

From there, you are ready to drive away. There's no need for a workshop at any point, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it is noticed quickly, lasting damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Westlea?

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening rule is unchanged — don't start the car — but the problem is not. The lubrication a fuel system depends on gets stripped away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and residue in its place.

Both are ours. There's a separate Westlea page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Westlea costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Frankly, no single number fits on a page like this. The job changes. Here is what moves it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much the tank can hold.
  • The kind of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's safe for a van.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear and not as a range. Not urgent, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Things we get about petrol in diesel around Westlea

I'm on a forecourt around Westlea. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a good portion of this happens. Often, provided the site consents: Jet, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that place is something our engineers answer on the spot.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Proportion decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that blend pulled through it.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. Driving moves the issue along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly helpful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly is not a modification and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave the car switched off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a different problem from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind restores. Later? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, since our engineers drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

Waiting next to it?

Keep the car shut off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and leave it off, if you have already driven it. A parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more commonly than people assume.

Draining misfilled vehicles, Westlea and the rest of Durham, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
