Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Weston Ditch?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Weston Ditch and the remainder of Suffolk. The first thing to do is not to start the engine. When your engine has not turned over and the petrol is still in the tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much went in. Contact us before all else begins, so you will hear what happens after that.

The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol engine diesel and it will typically not run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it moves off — fine for a couple of miles. Drivers have that reversed, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not fire it up. And if started, don't rely on it: the fuel system is wearing down whenever you drive.
  • Flicking the ignition on frequently primes the system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of your tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the ignition alone.
  • That advice supposes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Stay still if it's safe to. Hazards on, engine off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on The Grove, anywhere — a difficult place for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is easier for us to sort out than a motor that never moved.
  • Know where you are before ringing. A postcode starting IP28 8, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of arriving.
  • Three answers shape the full job: the stuff you tipped in, the ballpark volume involved, and whether it has been running since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Clearing petrol from a diesel at the forecourt

A good share of this job is finished at a forecourt, as that is where it often starts. Our technicians work on garage forecourts routinely, with the station's agreement, and so if you're still at Express with Gas that's generally where the drain gets done.

At the forecourt, this is caught with your motor never started, and nowhere else does that. Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean the fuel lines and your filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the keys.

Roll the vehicle out of the way if the staff offer, and they generally will. The next driver gets past the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Firing it just for four car lengths? No.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Weston Ditch

Easy, these ones, and the reason is the miles: a mile at light throttle draws little diesel. Petrol into a diesel Skoda Octavia somewhere in Weston Ditch, a boot loaded with shopping, and you stuck outside Commissary — phone us. Exiting that spot is never worth another start. The tank gets emptied where it sits, the lines cleaned, fresh diesel in, and you head home.

You'll be told to shift it clear of that gateway and fix it later. Don't. On the zig-zags at West Row Academy, a misfilled Audi A4 running on diesel is in the way, and that is all it is. Fire it up three more times being helpful and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes your lines, every prime draws more petrol through your filter on to the pump. Let them grumble. Ring us.

This is what a job in the car park by the pub in the village usually looks like. We arrive at the vehicle, ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has run since — these three replies determine much of the work. Then the contaminated mixture comes out of the tank, the fuel lines get rinsed, and the fuel filter comes off where your Ford Focus has a replaceable one. Fresh diesel goes in and your system is primed. Then our technicians fire it up, confirm it runs correctly, and you drive away.

Out there happy, back sluggish. If that was the trip to Heritage Park, look at your tank. Diesel gets weakened by petrol, and thin fuel slips past the close clearances meant to build injection pressure — so every additional mile your diesel Peugeot 3008 covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere safe, turn off, phone us.

Authorisation first, where there is a hire firm or a company behind your car — some agreements insist on it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, ring us about the diesel BMW 5 Series close to 9/11 Memorial. You will not know how full that tank was. Barely anyone does, two days into a car, and it gets worked out on the spot anyway. Our engineers ask because the damage petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a couple of litres in a nearly empty tank make a much stronger mixture than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is built to resist igniting under pressure, which is exactly what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more the motor rattles and smokes and flattens off.

Weston Ditch plus the areas next to it

Weston Ditch is a small village, and so our vans get out to it and to anywhere by it on the usual journeys: Thistley Green, Beck Row, West Row, Kenny Hill and Wilde Street.

Our technicians still come. The places above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of locations in Suffolk, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. On a boundary, or somewhere the satnav struggles with? Contact us and enquire rather than assuming.

The area the page includes is on the map. We operate roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of it, and your vehicle does not need to travel to us.

Kerbside breakdowns across Weston Ditch

Not everyone gets a decent spot to stop. Hazards on at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Hurdle Drove as you noticed after setting off — we take that call often enough that it is the usual kind.

Whether you stay beside the motor or move away from it turns on if being there feels safe. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the problem: restart the car to reach somewhere handier and the mixture goes further into your fuel system with every mile covered. However awkward the spot, it is no trouble for us to get to it, and that's much better for your car than driving on.

Run it already? Stop, then check this

Here is where your M11 comes in — under 25 miles away from Weston Ditch. A misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, while the signs when they arrive are generally a loss of power, a lumpy idle and smoke instead of a tidy stop.

Don't restart it to move it. Pull off at the first safe exit then turn off. On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors, and say so when you call. It alters what our engineers bring.

Where is Weston Ditch?

Weston Ditch is a small locality in Suffolk, situated in a low-lying area near the fenlands. Weston Ditch has a population of around 538 people and is characterized by detached housing. Weston Ditch is located near several other small places, including Thistley Green, Beck Row, and West Row, and is about 8.5 miles from the city of Ely.

When our technicians arrive with you in Weston Ditch: what we do

  • Three things get asked before any price — the fuel that was put in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • Away goes the polluted fuel.
  • Our engineers flush your fuel lines and clear your filter, and so what's left in the system is not what created the issue.
  • Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • When it's started, we make sure it runs correctly on new diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away. All of it is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught early, permanent damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Weston Ditch?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — the motor stays off — whereas this problem under it's a different one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the protection your fuel system depends on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and residue in its place.

AdBlue removal around Weston Ditch has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is usually the more serious of the two. Our technicians cover both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Weston Ditch?

Honestly, no single figure belongs on a page like this. This job differs. Here is what varies it:

  • Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the main one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much the tank takes.
  • Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is safe for a van.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight instead of as a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is good for that.

Petrol in diesel: everyday queries around Weston Ditch

Fuel drains on a Weston Ditch petrol station forecourt

A fair portion of this work gets done there, so yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Esso is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear whether working there's possible.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Proportion settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is whether that blend has been sucked through the system.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what shifts the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it is fixable far more commonly than drivers expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out properly, draining and purging is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the car switched off.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a distinct issue from a bygone era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces. That tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to put up with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There's no need to bring it to a main dealer, because our technicians drain and flush your car wherever it is.

Still with the car?

The motor remains off.

Switch it off somewhere sensible and keep it off, if you have already driven it. A stationary, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more frequently than people fear.
