Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Weston Point

If you have not started the motor yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is almost always what a motor needs while the petrol is still sitting in the tank and the engine has not yet run, which is why it is the next few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the vehicle wherever it has come to rest in Weston Point or the rest of Cheshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. Ring us and then we shall tell you what follows next before you attempt much else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

  • Never fire it up. Fired up regardless? Then don't trust it. Diesel in a petrol car typically won't run, and so the driver stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off fine, for a couple of miles. Most people get that confused. It isn't okay — your fuel system is grinding every mile you do.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only manages the one. That is why the ignition is left off as well — turn it on and you frequently prime the system, and that's petrol exiting that tank for exactly those parts.
  • Never thin it. Diesel put on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • A motor that has never moved is the easiest one to sort, and so stay where you are if you safely can. Stopped on the verge on Lydiate Lane? Hazards on, then keep the car there. A tricky location suits us better than a started motor.
  • Before you ring, work out your location. Anything nearest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting WA7 4 — that's what determines whether our van turns up or circles.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what got in, about how much, plus if your car has been started. Your answers settle all that comes after.

Can petrol be taken from a diesel on the forecourt?

Most of the work starts at a forecourt, which means a large part of that is done at one. Our technicians work on station forecourts all the time, with the site's consent, so if you are still at North West Fuels that is generally where this drain takes place.

Before the motor has run — a forecourt is the one place the mistake ends up stopped. The few seconds between checking the receipt and going for your key settle how much requires cleaning. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from the tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter require rinsing as well as that tank. It is not a catastrophe, and we can still sort it out where the car is.

The staff will normally offer to push it clear of the petrol pump so the next customer can get by. It is worth doing. Moving it four lengths does not merit starting it.

Can our engineers serve your part of Weston Point?

Being a residential suburb, Weston Point gets a frequent visit, and the places close by come along on that same run: Westfield and Weston, Higher Runcorn and Rocksavage, Heath.

There are separate pages for most locations across Cheshire, and the ones listed above are merely the closest neighbours — so yours being left off that list means nothing at all about whether our engineers come. Presuming is the mistake to avoid, especially on a boundary or anywhere your satnav gets lost. Ring us to check.

That map marks the ground this page includes. Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is ground our technicians cover, and none of that asks the vehicle to come to us.

Twenty to nine outside Weston Point Primary Academy, already late, and the receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Hazards on, motor off, call us. Three miles in the Nissan Qashqai seems like nothing, but a diesel pump delivers fuel to demand — and a frantic morning run asks for plenty.

Three replies determine most of the work: what got in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has run since. We ask for those answers when we arrive at the vehicle in the car park by Weaver Hotel. Next the polluted mix comes out of that tank, your lines are flushed, and where your Ford Focus has a replaceable filter, it comes off. After new diesel is in and your system bled, we fire it up and make sure it runs smoothly before you pull away.

Normal on the way out, sluggish on the way back. If that's how that run to Runcorn Hill went, that tank is the place to look. Petrol dilutes diesel, and runnier fuel slips past the tightly fitted components that are meant to build injection pressure — so the farther the Mercedes C-Class drove, the less well it held that pressure. Pull over somewhere safe, switch off then call us.

Our engineers rinse your lines rather than only emptying the tank, and the reason is that thinned fuel has already reached the filter and your pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The drive really helps — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Dacia Duster parked up near Christ Church a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Phone us then leave it off.

Turn off where you have stopped, and never restart it to find somewhere better — near Weston Cross or anywhere at all. Knocking, an uneven idle, white smoke and a limp throttle are a misfilled diesel Audi A3 telling you what's wrong.

Stuck by the roadside around Weston Point

Some drivers find no safe place to stop at all. Set off, then twigged? Finished up on the verge on Sydney Street, or sat in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That is a common call here. Not an unusual one.

Wait with the vehicle when it's safe to sit there, and clear of it when it's not. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the trouble: restart it to reach somewhere handier and the blend goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven. Driving on does the car far more harm than our van driving out to a difficult place, and that is no problem for us.

Run it already? Stop, and read this

Here is where your M56 comes in — under 3 miles from Weston Point. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will often manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power falls away, the idle turns uneven, and there may be smoke.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. Long drive? Anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the mixture. Say that on the phone, because it changes what goes in our van.

Weston Point itself

Weston Point is a small suburban area located on the coast of Cheshire, with an elevation of 22 metres above sea level. Weston Point sits near the towns of Westfield, Weston, and Higher Runcorn, and is approximately 10.9 miles from Chester. Weston Point has a population of around 1486 people, predominantly living in terraced housing. Weston Point is also situated about 167.2 miles northwest of London.

Once our engineers get to you in Weston Point: what we do

  • Our engineers check what went in, how much, and whether your motor has run. The responses change the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing.
  • The tank is drained of it.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever remains after that is not the thing that caused the issue.
  • The system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
  • When it's fired up, our technicians check it runs correctly on new diesel.

Then it is ready to set off. All of it is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.

A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Weston Point

If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first instruction is unchanged — do not crank it — yet the issue is not. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the lubrication your fuel system depends on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and build-up.

Both are ours. There's a separate Weston Point page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Weston Point

Truthfully, no single figure belongs on a page like this. This job varies. Here's what moves it:

  • Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the key one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there is safe for a technician.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range. Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel questions from Weston Point motorists

I am on a forecourt in Weston Point. Can you drain the car here?

Yes, and it's where a big part of this work takes place. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the owner's permission our technicians visit BP and the other forecourts locally all the time.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether the motor has run counts a lot more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres. What settles how much work is required is whether that blend has been drawn through the system — since although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. It's salvageable far more commonly than people expect, even though driving is what moves the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Your tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to put up with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to take it to a main dealer, as our engineers drain and clean the car wherever it is.

You, and your car, still together?

Shut off is the way it stays.

Turn it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.
