Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Westoning? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, throughout Westoning and the remainder of Bedfordshire. The first thing to do is not to start the engine. When the motor has not yet been started and the petrol is still sitting in that tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much went in. Contact us before everything else happens, so you will know what comes from there.

What to try first about petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it pulls away — all right for a couple of miles. Drivers have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't start the car. And having started, never believe it: that fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.
  • Leave the car's ignition alone too. Diesel does two roles: it combusts, and before it combusts it greases the high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Turning the ignition on is usually sufficient to prime that system, which pulls that petrol out of that tank and into just those parts.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It won't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Stay put if it is wise to. Hazards on, engine off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Sampshill Road, anywhere — a tricky place for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to handle than a motor that never shifted.
  • Our van turning up instead of circling depends on two things: a postcode that starts MK45 5, and whatever is closest to you with a label on it. Have both prepared before you ring.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, roughly how much, plus whether the motor has started. These three facts settle the entire job.

At the forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

Most of the job begins at the pump, meaning a fair portion of that gets done there. We operate on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the station's consent, so if you're still at Tesco that's normally where this drain happens.

Nowhere else other than the forecourt can this be spotted with your motor still cold. The few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for your key settle how much needs cleaning. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter need rinsing as well as your tank. It's not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where the vehicle stands.

Staff will generally chip in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get by. Take the help. Starting the car just to shift four car lengths is not.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Westoning

Westoning plus the areas beside it

Westoning is a rural village, and so our team get out to the town and to the places around it on the usual rounds: Wood End, Harlington, Flitwick, Tingrith and Pulloxhill.

There are dedicated pages for most locations around Bedfordshire, and the ones named above are simply the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off this list says nothing about if we come. Phone to check rather than guessing, particularly when you're on the boundary or somewhere a satnav misreads.

That map outlines the patch this page covers. Our technicians work at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of it, and your car does not need to come to us.

You'll be advised to shift the vehicle clear of the gateway and fix it later. Don't. On the zig-zags at Westoning Lower School, a misfilled Skoda Octavia running on diesel is in the way, and that is all it is. Crank it three more times being helpful and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the fuel lines, every prime draws more petrol past your filter on to your pump. Let them complain. Phone us.

Your pump is not turning, so whatever the diesel Nissan Qashqai did on the way to Flitwick Cricket Club, none of it is happening now. Nothing gets worse while it waits. Take your time over this — but don't drive the car home to buy any.

About as well as this goes, once the motor has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Audi A4 left close to Westoning VIllage Hall scarcely two streets on. Phone us, then leave the car off. A short drive does truly help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, and so your filter and your pump have had thinned fuel through them — hence cleaning your lines rather than only clearing that tank.

Hire car or company car? Ring them before you phone us — some contracts want the hire firm to sign off the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal quicker than sorting it later on. Then phone us about the Dacia Duster by Hope Strict Baptist Chapel, and do not worry that you can't say how full your tank was. Nearly no one can, in a car they collected two days ago, and our technicians work it out on site. The reason we ask is that petrol in a diesel does its harm as a proportion: the same few litres in an almost empty tank is a far stronger blend than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger the mix, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.

By this point that tank is not where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, the mix is in the filter, the lines, the pump and its rail — and it doesn't come back out with the tank contents. A diesel Vauxhall Astra that made it close to Westoning Baptist Church needs the system cleared, not emptied.

Stuck at the kerb somewhere around Westoning?

Not everybody gets the chance to stop somewhere sensible. Set off, then noticed? Landed by the verge beside High Street, or sat in some lay-by with your hazards going? That is a normal call here. Not an unusual one.

Out of the vehicle while it isn't sensible to sit in it, by it when it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the mixture further into the system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. We'll send the van to an inconvenient place without any trouble, and for the vehicle that is much better than driving on.

Run it already? Pull in, then see below

The M1 is the road which matters here, and runs under 3 miles from Westoning. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a tidy stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Don't restart it to reposition. Pull off at the first sensible junction then switch off. It affects what we bring, and so tell us when you ring: on a longer trip — anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the injectors.

All about Westoning

Westoning is a village in Bedfordshire, situated in the inland countryside of the Eastern region, with an elevation of around 77 metres. Westoning lies approximately 36 miles north of London and 12 miles south of Milton Keynes, near the villages of Wood End, Harlington, and Flitwick. Westoning has a population of around 1766 people, predominantly living in detached houses. Westoning remains a rural community with a strong sense of local identity.

The job in Westoning, step by step

  • Three things get established before any price — the fuel that went in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • The contaminated fuel comes from that tank.
  • What is left in the fuel system shouldn't be what caused the issue, so the fuel lines get cleaned and the filter cleaned.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.
  • After it's started, our technicians make sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

That has it ready to set off. Our technicians do all of this wherever your car has come to a stop, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been noticed early, it's very unusual for there to be long-term damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Westoning is a separate job

Do not crank it: that first step holds whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this problem itself. Weakened diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and residue.

Both are ours. There is a separate Westoning page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Westoning?

Our technicians can't put one number on this page honestly, because this job isn't one job. What moves it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much that tank holds.
  • The sort of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the car is, and if our van can safely get to and work on it.

Tell us the car, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a firm answer instead of a range. Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.

Westoning motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

Fuel drains on a Westoning petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a big part of this work happens. Our technicians attend BP and the other forecourts nearby routinely, with the owner's permission — tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you if our engineers can work there.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether the engine has run counts a lot more, though the ratio matters too, rather than the litres. What settles how much work is required is if that mixture has been pulled through your fuel system — because even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What now?

Stop somewhere safe, turn off, and leave the vehicle off. Driving is what moves the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it is salvageable much more commonly than people fear, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a change and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave the car switched off.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

What petrol has diluted isn't restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a different problem. So no. The tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to live with it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

You don't need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

Still with the vehicle?

That engine stays off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best place available — and motorists fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
