Westra: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
With the tank still holding the petrol and your engine not yet started, nearly every job takes only a drain, so leave your engine off. That outcome is decided in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that went in. Across Westra and the rest of The Vale of Glamorgan, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it is, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. One call to us is plenty: our technicians will tell you what comes next. Make that straight away.
What next? Petrol in a diesel, step by step
- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will generally fail to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine for several miles. Drivers have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not fire it up. And if started, don't depend on it: that fuel system is wearing down whenever you drive.
- Leave your ignition alone as well. Diesel has two tasks: it combusts, and before it ignites it greases that injection pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Flicking your ignition on is usually all it takes to prime the system, which draws the petrol out of that tank and into precisely those components.
- That advice supposes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It does not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you get is a bigger tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
- Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A car that hasn't moved is the quickest one to handle, and we'd sooner get to an awkward place than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Westra, turn those hazards on and keep the car there.
- Check where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning CF64 4, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than arriving.
- Ring 0333 366 0103. Expect three questions — what got in, about how many litres, plus if the engine has been run. Your answers shape everything that follows.
Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel
A good portion of the work ends up completed at the pump, since that's where it usually begins. If you're still at the forecourt at Texaco, that's generally where this drain gets done — our technicians work on station forecourts routinely, with the owner's agreement.
At a garage, it is halted with your motor never started, and no place else does that. The few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for the key decide how much requires cleaning. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the filter need rinsing as well as the tank. It's not a disaster, and our engineers can still deal with it where your car is.
Staff will normally help out pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Accept the offer. Moving it four bays doesn't merit cranking it.
The complicated part is the bay, not the fuel. Cars either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and occasionally a height limit on the way in that decides if our van can reach you at all — so when you call from a car park like the one outside Lidl, tell us how much clearance there is round you and which way round the vehicle is. Those our engineers visit often. Should there be no room to work alongside the diesel Peugeot 308, it gets moved with the engine off, and not out of fuss over a few seconds of running: priming takes place at every start, more of the blend departs your tank for the pump, and two shunts into a roomier space have silently made a harder job of what was simply a vehicle sitting still.
Out there fine, back flat. If that was the run to Dinas Powys Common, look at that tank. Diesel gets thinned by petrol, and thin fuel leaks past the close gaps meant to build injection pressure — so every additional mile the diesel BMW 5 Series covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere safe, switch off, ring us.
Ringing from close to Parish Hall? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the car it is on. Room for a technician alongside you, without the road being blocked. And whether anything has run since the fill-up. The spot itself hardly counts: on-street is where our technicians work most, and we would far rather have a narrow bay than a motor somebody has driven somewhere simpler. Then it's a drain for the Vauxhall Astra, a filter change where there's one worth changing, lines purged, fresh fuel put round the entire system. By now the worst of that is in the lines and not your tank.
Unfamiliar spots are where this occurs most, and the reason is mechanical not sloppy: the smaller petrol nozzle slides into a modern diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all. Topped up by Lee Hall without thinking, in a diesel Audi A6 you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anybody realises, and distance is what determines how much petrol gets to the injectors.
What occurs next is the problem. The engine at once pulls the petrol left sitting in the fuel filter and the feed lines back round through the pump a second time, since emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put clean diesel in, a person sure of themselves will tell you — and that advice is only half right, because do it to a diesel Kia Sportage parked up, St Peter's Church say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound plausible. Ring us instead. We flush your system and take the fuel filter off where the car has a working one, and that's the difference between your car being put right and your car just starting.
Service near Westra
Westra is a residential suburb, so our team go out to the town and to anywhere around it on the usual journeys: Dinas Powis, Saint Andras, Eastbrook, Murch and Palmerstown.
There are separate pages for most locations around The Vale of Glamorgan, and the ones named above are merely the immediate neighbours — so yours being missing from the list tells you nothing whatsoever about whether we come. Phone and check rather than guessing — county lines particularly, and anywhere your phone might misread.
The ground the page includes sits on this map. Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is territory our technicians cover, and none of that asks your vehicle to come to us.
Roadside stops around Westra
Some people have no suitable spot to pull in at all. If you noticed after setting off and finished up along the verge beside Westra Cross, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that's a common call for us rather than an odd one.
Out of the motor while it isn't safe to sit in it, beside it if it is. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the trouble: restart it to reach somewhere better and that mix goes further into your fuel system with every mile covered. Our van driving to a tricky spot is no bother for us, and it is much better for your car than pressing on.
So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles
under 10 miles out of Westra, the local M4 is what counts now. A drop in power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, instead of a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.
Take the next junction that's safe, stop there, and don't start the vehicle to move it. It affects what our engineers bring, and so mention it when you call: on a longer drive — anything near the under 5 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.
Westra itself
Westra is a suburban area in The Vale of Glamorgan, situated near the coast and approximately 4 miles from Cardiff. Westra sits at a relatively low elevation of around 40 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation in the area. Westra is close to nearby places such as Dinas Powis and Eastbrook, and is part of the wider Cardiff urban area.
The call-out around Westra, step by step
- Our engineers ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has your engine run? Those answers alter what the work really is.
- Out comes the polluted fuel.
- We rinse the lines and clear the filter, so what's remaining in the system is not what created the problem.
- Our technicians pour clean diesel in and prime the fuel system.
- The engine is turned on and checked to confirm it runs properly on new diesel.
From there, you are ready to drive away. Everything is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed quickly, lasting damage is very rare.
A separate matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Westra
The issue isn't the same, though the opening step is — do not fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets stripped away by petrol, which thins your diesel. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and residue.
Both are ours. There's a separate Westra page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Westra?
One price would not be honest here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much the tank holds.
- The type of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can our van get to it and work there safely?
Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and whether your motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. If it's not pressing — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.
Petrol in diesel questions from Westra motorists
Fuel drains on a Westra petrol station forecourt
Yes, and it is where a big part of this work happens. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the owner's agreement we visit Cardiff Gas - autogas and the other forecourts locally all the time.
Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?
Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and far more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that mixture pulled through it.
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle
Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving takes the issue along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly valuable thing left to you is not restarting the car.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a change and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to remain off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct fault and it does not replace what petrol has weakened. That tank still has petrol in it after that, and your pump still has to cope with it.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
Wherever your car is, we drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.
Is your vehicle still with you?
Do not switch your engine back on.
Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car later on. This is recoverable from much more regularly than motorists assume, and a stationary, cold motor is the best place to be in.
