Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Westrip? Don't Start It
If you have not started the engine yet, do not. A drain and nothing else is nearly always what a motor needs while the fuel is still inside that tank and your engine has not run, which is why it's the following few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the vehicle wherever it has come to rest in Westrip or the remainder of Gloucestershire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there. We will explain what the next step is. Ring us — that comes ahead of everything else.
What next? Petrol in a diesel, in turn
- While you drive, your pump and the injectors wear down. This is why you don't crank it, and why you do not rely on it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel especially — the bit people get wrong — is that it drives away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally can't run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you drive on.
- Leave your ignition alone as well. Diesel performs two roles: it combusts, and before it burns it lubricates that injection pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Flicking your ignition on is frequently enough to prime that system, which moves this petrol out of that tank and into just those components.
- Topping up clears nothing. It leaves you a fuller tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage the way that advice implies — so don't pour diesel on top to weaken it. Octane is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
- A motor that has never moved is the quickest one to sort out, and so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Sandpits Lane? Hazards on, then keep it there. A tricky spot suits us better than a started motor.
- Before you phone, work out your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a name on it, plus a postcode beginning GL6 6 — that is what settles whether our van shows up or circles.
- What got in, approximately how much, and if the engine has started — those three details decide the entire call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us.
Draining petrol from the diesel on a forecourt
Forecourts are where the job often begins, and where a big chunk of that ends. Our technicians work on garage forecourts all the time, with the site's consent, so if you are still at Esso that's normally where the drain happens.
Before the motor has run — a garage is the one spot the mistake is spotted. The few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for the key settle how much needs rinsing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from your tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and your filter need flushing as well as your tank. It is not a catastrophe, and we can still deal with it where the car stands.
The attendants will generally help you wheel the car out from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get through. That's worth doing. Four vehicle lengths is not worth the risk.
Places our team cover around Westrip
These same rounds carry us to Cashes Green, Hamwell Leaze, Puckshole, Randwick and Bread Street along with Westrip, which is a residential suburb.
Our technicians do come. The names above are just the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all places around Gloucestershire, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Near a border, or anywhere your satnav misreads? Contact us to ask instead of guessing.
The patch this page covers appears on the map. Our technicians work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of that, and the vehicle does not need to travel to us.
Roadside stops around Westrip
The chance to pull over anywhere sensible doesn't fall to everybody. If you worked it out after setting off and finished up along the verge of Redhouse Lane, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that is a common call for us rather than an odd one.
Stay beside your car while it's sensible to be there, yet out of the car when it's not. Do not restart the motor to limp the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mixture further into your fuel system. We'll send our van to an inconvenient place without any fuss, and for the car that's a lot better than carrying on.
Three answers determine much of the work: what was put in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has run since. We ask for them when we reach your car in the car park by Carpenters Arms. Next the polluted mixture comes out of that tank, your lines are flushed, and where your Mercedes E-Class has a replaceable filter, it comes off. Once fresh diesel is in and the fuel system bled, we start the engine and confirm it runs smoothly before you drive away.
Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol dilutes diesel, and runnier fuel leaks past the tightly fitted components that are meant to build that pressure, so the farther a diesel Audi A3 travelled, the less well it held. Normal on the way out and gutless on the way back is how the trip to Finns Way went, then, and that tank is where to look. Pull in somewhere safe, turn off and call us.
The pump sits ahead of the injectors, so whatever a worn one sheds travels downstream with the fuel — which is why we're firm about not driving on. Ring us, and leave the diesel Vauxhall Astra where it is near Saint John.
Most of these occur somewhere unfamiliar, and the cause is mechanical instead of careless — practically no resistance meets a narrower petrol nozzle entering a newer diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Ford Kuga, a fill-up close to Randwick Village Hall that you did not think about? Call us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anybody notices it, and the further they go, the more petrol winds up at the injectors.
Flushed, not drained — that is what a diesel BMW X1 which got as far as Cross Dyke needs. Running a diesel puts that mix into the fuel filter, the fuel lines, your pump and its rail, none of which empties with your tank, and so by now your tank holds the smaller part of the problem.
Petrol in a diesel, and the motor has rolled
This is where the local M5 comes in, under 3 miles from Westrip. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will usually do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power falls away, the idle turns uneven, and there may be some smoke.
Take the next junction that is safe, stop there, and never restart the car to move it. It alters what our engineers bring, so tell us when you call: on a longer run — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through your filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.
A bit about Westrip
Westrip is a suburban area in Gloucestershire, situated approximately 7.8 miles from Gloucester and 92.8 miles from London. Westrip sits inland at an elevation of around 114 metres, surrounded by nearby places such as Cashes Green, Hamwell Leaze, and Puckshole. Westrip has a population of around 3119 people and is characterised by predominantly semi-detached housing.
What our technicians do when our engineers reach you around Westrip
- Three things get asked before any quote — the fuel that was put in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
- The contaminated fuel comes from the tank.
- What is remaining in the system shouldn't be what started the issue, so the fuel lines get rinsed and the filter cleaned.
- Clean diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.
- We fire it up and make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.
From there, you are ready to pull away. Our engineers do all of this wherever the car has stopped, which means it never has to go to a garage, and if it has been noticed early, it's very rare for there to be lasting damage.
AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Westrip?
AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — your engine stays off — while this problem underneath it's a different one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the lubrication the fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.
Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Westrip page. Both are ours to deal with.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Westrip?
One price would not be fair here, because this is not one job. These are the things that change it:
- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that proportion.
- Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
- Whether a technician can safely reach the car and work on it, which depends on where the vehicle is.
Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and whether your engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. For your car at home that's going nowhere and is not time-critical, is fine too.
Things our engineers hear about petrol in diesel in Westrip
I'm on a forecourt in Westrip. Can you drain the vehicle here?
A big part of this work gets done there, so yes. Our engineers visit Texaco and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the station's permission — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there.
A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
Proportion settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. What settles how much work is required is if that mixture has been drawn through the system — because even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one, either way that is the question.
I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?
Stop somewhere safe, turn off, then keep the vehicle off. Driving shifts the problem along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really helpful thing left to you is not restarting it.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
No. Carried out properly, draining and cleaning is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle switched off.
Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a different fault and it does not put back what petrol has weakened. After that? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
No. Our engineers drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a main dealer.
You, and the vehicle, still together?
The motor stays off.
If you have already driven the vehicle, stop somewhere safe, switch it off then keep it off. Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best position available — and motorists fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
