Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Westward Ho!?

Do not turn on your engine. If the fuel is still inside your tank and the motor has not yet been started, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires — and that gets determined in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they are, across Westward Ho! and the rest of Devon, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive. Our team shall explain what the next stage will be. Contact us — that happens ahead of anything else.

Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't crank it. Turned on regardless? Then don't trust it. Diesel in a petrol motor generally will not run, and so the motorist stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off fine, for a couple of miles. Motorists get that confused. It isn't fine — your fuel system is wearing down every mile you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why the ignition is left off too — turn it on and you frequently prime your system, and that is petrol exiting that tank for exactly those components.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It hands you a fuller tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage the way that advice suggests — so never add diesel on top to thin it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay still if it's sensible to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Nelson Road, anywhere — an odd location for us beats a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to handle than a vehicle that never shifted.
  • Keep your whereabouts prepared before you dial. A postcode beginning EX39 1 and whatever is closest to you with a name on it is the difference between the van turning up and the van circling.
  • What got in, approximately how much, plus whether the car has started — those three replies determine the entire visit. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Can petrol be pumped out of your diesel at a forecourt?

Pumps are where this job usually starts, and where a good part of it finishes. Still at Morrisons? Then that is generally where it gets done. Garage forecourts are routine for us, with the consent of the owner.

The forecourt is the single spot this gets spotted before the engine has run. Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean the lines and your filter need rinsing as well as that tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for your key.

Attendants will generally pitch in pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next driver get through. Welcome the help. Four car lengths isn't worth a restart.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Westward Ho!

The call our engineers want sounds like this: diesel Renault Clio, a couple of litres of unleaded, driven a couple of miles, now shut off at Morrisons. What we are actually asking is how much fuel the pump has pulled — not how long ago it was.

You'll be advised to move it clear of the gateway and deal with it later. Don't. On the zig-zags by St Margaret's Church of England Junior School, a wrongly fuelled Skoda Octavia running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Start it three more times being courteous and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the lines, every prime pulls more petrol past your filter toward the pump. Let them moan. Phone.

Here's the full mechanism. Diesel needs enough body to seal the tight gaps it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which accounts for the usual The Green call — a diesel Nissan Qashqai, out there without complaint and back down on power, lumpy at idle, perhaps a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; diluted, it escapes past those gaps and not building, and delivery comes weaker, later, less even than your engine was built round. Not a failing engine, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

Knocking, a lumpy idle, white smoke, a throttle gone limp. That's a misfilled diesel BMW 1 Series telling you what is wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, close to Holy Trinity or anywhere else, and do not start the vehicle to find a better spot.

Fixed and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is your circuit: our technicians flush it, and take the fuel filter off where there is a working one. Compare that with the sure of themselves advice you'll get — drain it, refill with clean diesel. Half right. Do exactly that to a diesel Vauxhall Astra near Pebble Ridge Adventure Golf and Go Karts and it will start, which is precisely why the suggestion sounds sensible. Then the engine sucks the petrol left behind in the filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through the pump, as emptying a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Westward Ho! plus the places beside it

Westward Ho! is a coastal village, and our technicians are out to it and to anywhere around it on the usual runs: Buckleigh, Silford, Northam, Rickards Down and Raleigh Estate.

If yours isn't on that list that does not mean we never come — there are separate pages for most places across Devon, and the ones listed above are simply the closest neighbours. Presuming is the thing to skip, especially on a border or anywhere your phone gets lost. Call us to ask.

Check our map for the area included here. We work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of it, and your vehicle never needs to come to us.

Stranded by the kerbside anywhere around Westward Ho!?

Not everybody gets a chance to pull in somewhere suitable. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge beside Youngaton Road because you realised after setting off — our engineers take that call so often that it's the usual kind.

Whether you wait with your car or move clear of it rests on whether being nearby looks sensible. Never start up the motor to limp the car somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that mixture further into your fuel system. We will send the van to an awkward location without any fuss, and for your car that is far better than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, and the car has travelled

This is where your M5 counts, under 50 miles out of Westward Ho!. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Come off at the first safe junction, turn off, and do not restart the vehicle to move it. Assume the worst of that on a long run. Anything approaching the under 50 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Say so when you ring. What we bring differs.

What our technicians do when our technicians get to you around Westward Ho!

  • Three things get asked before any price — the fuel that was put in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • Away comes the polluted mixture.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.
  • The motor is turned on and tested to make sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

That leaves it ready to set off. There is no need for a workshop at any stage, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it is caught soon, long-term damage is very unusual.

Westward Ho! AdBlue removal is a separate problem

The fault is not the same, though the opening rule is — never crank it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

AdBlue removal around Westward Ho! has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's usually the more significant of the two. We cover both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Westward Ho!?

Truthfully, no single price fits on a page like this. This job varies. Here's what varies it:

  • This is the key one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, compared with how much the tank takes.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.
  • Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there sensibly?

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is ideal for that.

Westward Ho! motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Westward Ho!?

Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this gets done. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the owner's agreement our technicians work at Texaco and the other forecourts locally regularly.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mixture sucked through it.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Pull over somewhere safe, switch off, then leave the vehicle off. It's salvageable much more regularly than motorists assume, even though driving is what shifts the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't a modification and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct problem and it does not put back what petrol has diluted. Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, as we drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

Standing next to it?

The motor remains off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere safe, turn it off and keep it off. Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best place available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
