Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Westy?
Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Westy and the rest of Cheshire. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. While your engine has not turned over and the petrol is still inside your tank, a tank drain is almost always all it requires, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much went in. Ring us before anything else begins, so you'll hear what comes after that.
Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel
- Don't start it — and don't depend on it when it runs. This is the part people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine filled with diesel usually just will not run, and so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, ticks over and drives off just fine for several miles. It is not fine. It's eating into your fuel system as you drive.
- Leave your ignition alone as well. Diesel has two roles: it ignites, and before it burns it greases your high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Flicking your ignition on is often all it takes to prime your system, which pulls this petrol out of the tank then into just those parts.
- Don't pour diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage the way that guidance assumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it merely hands you a fuller tank of the same mixture. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
- Stay put if it is sensible to. Hazards on, engine off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Richmond Avenue, anywhere — an odd location for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to deal with than a car that never moved.
- Find out where you are before calling. A postcode that starts WA4 1, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than showing up.
- Three details settle the whole job: the fuel you tipped in, the rough volume of it, and if anything has been running since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.
Call us before you collect the car. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Golf this morning, and the vehicle at Padgate ever since? Then the day has taken nothing from you: fuel sitting in a tank is harmless, and any damage came on the trip in, when the pump was taking diesel that petrol had thinned.
Twenty to nine by St Augustine's Catholic Primary School, already late, and your receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Hazards on, engine off, ring us. Three miles in your BMW 3 Series sounds like nothing, but a diesel pump meters fuel on demand — and a frantic morning run demands plenty.
Chance the drive home from The Cheshire Cheese? Not a chance. It will start and it will drive off perfectly well, which is the problem — a diesel on a diluted tank acts normally whilst grinding the parts your fuel should be protecting. Park the Peugeot 308 then phone us.
Ringing from close to Westy Community Centre? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the vehicle it is on. Room for our van beside you, without the road being blocked. And whether anything has run since the fill-up. The place itself scarcely matters: on-street is where our engineers work most, and we would far rather have a narrow space than a car a person has driven somewhere quicker. Then it is a drain for the Audi A6, a filter change where there's one worth changing, lines purged, clean fuel put round the entire circuit. By now the worst of that is in the lines and not the tank.
Repaired and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is the system: we flush it, and take the fuel filter off where there's a working one. Compare that with the sure of themselves suggestion you will get — drain the vehicle, refill with fresh diesel. Half true. Do exactly that to a diesel Citroen C4 close to Latchford Methodist Church and it will start, which is precisely why the advice sounds sensible. Then the motor draws the petrol left behind in your filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through the pump, since emptying a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead.
Can petrol be drained from a diesel at a forecourt?
The work starts at a pump, usually. Regularly the work wraps up at one too. If you are still at the forecourt at Esso, that's usually where this drain happens — we work on station forecourts regularly, with the station's permission.
At the forecourt, this is halted with the engine never run, and nowhere else manages it. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean the lines and the filter need rinsing as well as that tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for your key.
Attendants will normally pitch in pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next customer get past. Accept the offer. Starting it over four car lengths? Never.
Areas we reach around Westy
Latchford, Bruche, Grappenhall, Paddington, Howley — every one of these on our journeys that bring us across to Westy too, a residential suburb.
Not on the list? That means nothing. The places above are just the nearest few, and the majority of towns in Cheshire have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Phone to enquire instead of assuming, particularly when you're on a boundary or anywhere the satnav misreads.
That map shows the area this page includes. Your vehicle does not need to travel to us. We work across all of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Roadside breakdowns around Westy
Some drivers find no safe place to stop whatsoever. Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge beside Whitley Avenue since you worked it out after setting off — our engineers take that call often enough that it's the normal kind.
Fine there? Sit by it. Not safe? Climb out and away from it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the blend further into the system — and oblige it often will, which is why the engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer. Carrying on does the car far more harm than our van driving out to a difficult location, and that is no bother for us.
A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?
This is where your Woolston Interchange comes into it — under 3 miles from Westy. A loss of power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they appear, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.
Don't start it to move it. Come off at the first sensible junction and switch off. On a longer run — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the injectors, and tell us when you phone. It alters what our engineers bring.
Where's Westy?
Westy is a suburban area in Cheshire, situated on the riverside with an elevation of around 13 metres. Westy has a population of approximately 7630 people and predominantly consists of semi-detached housing.
What we do when we reach you around Westy
- Our engineers establish what was put in, how much, and if the engine has run. The answers shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting.
- Our technicians drain the tank of all the tainted fuel.
- Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever remains later on isn't the thing that created the problem.
- Our technicians put clean diesel in and prime the system.
- It's run with clean diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it is running correctly.
From that point, you are ready to pull away. Lasting damage is very rare when it has been noticed soon, and as everything is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to be taken to a garage.
A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Westy
If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening step is unchanged — never fire it up — yet this problem isn't. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the protection the fuel system depends on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and deposits.
Both are ours. There is a separate Westy page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.
What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs in Westy
What changes the price is listed below, as the job is not one job and we cannot honestly put a single number on this page.
- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
- AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.
- Where the car is, and whether a van can safely reach and work on it.
Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and if your motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. For your car at home that is going nowhere and isn't time-critical, is fine too.
Petrol in diesel: everyday queries around Westy
At a petrol station in Westy, can you do a fuel drain there?
Yes, and it is where a large portion of this work takes place. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you if our technicians can work there. With the owner's consent we work at EG On the Move and the other forecourts nearby routinely.
Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?
Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?
Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?
Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. It is salvageable much more commonly than drivers expect, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all. What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to remain off.
Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?
What petrol has thinned isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate issue. So no. Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
There is no need to bring it to a dealership, since our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is.
You, and your car, still together?
Turned off is how it remains.
Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, then let it remain that way. Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best place available — and drivers fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
