Whitby: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
Do not start your engine. While the petrol is still sitting in the tank and the engine has not yet turned over, a drain is nearly always all it takes — and that gets decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they are, all over Whitby and the rest of Cheshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Contact us before all else starts, and you will hear what happens from there.
Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel
- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will normally refuse to run at all, so the person stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — all right for a couple of miles. Drivers have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never crank it. And once started, do not rely on it: the fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.
- Two tasks, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors greased. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why the car's ignition is left off as well — switch it on and you often prime the system, and that is petrol leaving that tank for just those components.
- Don't thin it. Diesel poured on top removes nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.
- A vehicle that has never moved is the simplest one to deal with, and so remain where you are if you safely can. Pulled up on the verge on Dawn Gardens? Hazards on, then leave it there. A difficult spot works for us better than a started motor.
- Before you call, have your position. Anything nearest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting CH65 6 — that is what determines whether the technician arrives or circles.
- Phone 0333 366 0103. Let us know what went in, roughly how many litres, plus whether your car has fired. These three facts determine the full call-out.
How far you travelled is what our technicians ask about, not how long your vehicle has been stood — and here's why. Diesel has two roles on its way through the engine: it combusts, and before burning it protects the high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol does the first only. So a quick fill on the trip in, the realisation coming at about eleven, and a diesel Renault Megane parked at Ellesmere Port since quarter past eight shows those couple of miles were covered with the pump working on a fuel stripped of a great deal of its protection. Phone us and leave the vehicle just where it is.
Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and usually it will not run, so the driver stops there and the harm stops with them. Flip it — petrol into a diesel — and the engine starts, idles and moves off as though nothing had happened, while your high-pressure pump works without the protection the fuel is supposed to be supplying. That is the catch, and it is why the diesel Dacia Duster will have seemed completely usual coming back from Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School. They all do. From the driver's seat there's nothing to warn you about, so nothing alerts you. Ring us with roughly how far you drove, and how hard; the second one counts more than the first.
Straightforward job, this one — until somebody takes it home. A diesel Audi A3 sitting outside Grace Arms with petrol in the tank loses nothing by sitting there overnight, so leave the vehicle and ring us once it is light. Expect a question about the trip there, though. Short and chilly is exactly where petrol fails to burn, and what won't burn can work past the rings and into the oil.
Nothing is getting worse while it waits. Whatever the diesel BMW 5 Series did on the way to Whitby Park, it is doing none of it now: the pump isn't turning. So take your time — but never drive the car home to buy yourself any.
Our engineers clean your lines rather than only emptying the tank, and the reason is that thinned fuel has already got to the filter and the pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The drive really helps — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Mercedes A-Class parked up close to St. Thomas & All Saints a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Call us then leave it off.
Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel
A big portion of this job ends up completed at a forecourt, since that's where it mostly kicks off. The drain typically gets done there and then. Still on the forecourt at Morrisons? Given the station's agreement, that is a spot our technicians work, and regularly.
At the forecourt, it is stopped with the motor never fired, and nowhere else does that. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump. That is not a calamity, and our technicians can still sort it out where it sits. It does mean the fuel lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as that tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for the key.
Out from the pump, the next motorist can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you move the car. Well worth it. Firing the car for four car lengths? Don't.
Can we serve your corner of Whitby?
Ellesmere Port, Wolverham, Whitbyheath, Overpool, Great Sutton — all of these on our trips that take us across to Whitby too, a residential suburb.
Our technicians still come. The names above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all locations across Cheshire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Presuming is the thing to avoid, particularly on the border or anywhere a satnav struggles. Ring us to ask.
The map shows the area the page covers. Your car doesn't need to move to us. We operate over all of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Roadside call-outs across Whitby
Some people have no sensible place to pull over whatsoever. A routine call for us and not an odd one: realised after setting off, ended up on the verge on St Thomas View or in a lay-by with your hazards on.
Out of the vehicle if it is not wise to be there, beside it when it is. Don't restart your engine to limp the car somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mix further into the fuel system. A technician heading to a tricky spot is no problem for us, and it is a lot better for your car than driving on.
Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has moved
This is where the local M53 matters, under 3 miles out of Whitby. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is smoke, an uneven idle and power ebbing away — not a neat stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.
Get off at the first sensible junction, switch off, and do not restart it to reposition. Presume the worst of that on a long run. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through your filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you ring. What our technicians bring differs.
A bit about Whitby
Whitby is a suburban area in Cheshire, situated near the coast and approximately 5.9 miles from Chester. Whitby sits at an elevation of 33 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Whitby is part of the wider North West region, with nearby places including Ellesmere Port and Whitbyheath. Whitby is located about 169.3 miles from London, making it a relatively distant suburb from the capital city.
What comes next when our technicians reach you around Whitby
- Three things get asked before any price — your fuel that got in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
- Your tank is emptied of everything.
- Fuel lines are flushed through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.
- Fresh diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.
- We turn it on and check it runs properly on clean diesel.
From there, you are ready to set off. Everything is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been spotted early, long-term damage is very uncommon.
A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Whitby
Don't fire it up: that opening rule stands whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the fault itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the lubrication the fuel system relies on. Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.
Both are ours. There's a separate Whitby page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.
What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Whitby
Our technicians cannot put one number on this page frankly, because the job is not one job. What shifts it:
- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that ratio.
- Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there safely?
The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear and not as a range. Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.
Petrol in diesel questions from Whitby drivers
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Whitby?
Plenty of what we do happens nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the owner's agreement we work at Shell and the other forecourts nearby regularly.
A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?
I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. Now what?
Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of your tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable far more regularly than drivers expect.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
No. Carried out properly, emptying and cleaning is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Later on? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?
No. Our engineers drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a dealership.
Still with your vehicle?
The motor stays off.
Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, and let the car remain that way. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. People fear this a lot more than they need to.
