Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Whitchurch?

With that tank still carrying the petrol and the motor not yet started, nearly every job requires only a drain, so leave the motor off. That outcome is settled in the minutes straight after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that was put in. Throughout Whitchurch and the remainder of Buckinghamshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. A single ring our way is plenty: our engineers shall show you what happens next. Do that straight away.

What to do first about petrol in a diesel

  • While you drive, your pump and your injectors wear. This is why you don't start the vehicle, and why you don't believe it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel especially — the bit drivers get wrong — is that it pulls away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically cannot run at all, which stops the driver and stops the harm with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it lubricates — that high-pressure pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition alone too: turning it on is often sufficient to prime the system, and priming moves petrol from the tank into just those parts.
  • That advice supposes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It won't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a larger tank of the same blend. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Our team would rather get to a difficult location than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay put. Nothing is easier to handle than a vehicle that hasn't moved. On the verge on Market Hill, that means hazards on then keep the vehicle.
  • The van arriving rather than circling rests on two things: a postcode that starts HP22 4, and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it. Get both ready before you call.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three things — what got in, about how many litres, plus whether the car has been turned over. Your replies determine whatever happens next.

Can petrol be pumped from a diesel at a forecourt?

The work begins at the pump, typically. Quite often the work wraps up on site too. If you're still on the forecourt at Gulf, that is usually where the drain takes place — our technicians work on station forecourts routinely, with the site's agreement.

No place but a forecourt can this be stopped with your motor still unstarted. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and our technicians can still put it right where it is. It does mean the fuel lines and the filter need flushing as well as your tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between checking your receipt and going for your key.

Attendants will usually pitch in pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Take the assistance. Firing the car for four vehicle lengths? Don't.

Parts we reach in Whitchurch

Hunters Yard, Creslow, Oving, Hardwick, Pitchcott — each of those on our trips that take us over to Whitchurch itself, a rural village.

If yours is not on this list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are pages for the majority of locations across Buckinghamshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the closest neighbours. Contact us to check instead of assuming — boundaries particularly, and wherever the satnav can get wrong.

Look at this map for the area covered here. Our technicians work by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of that, and your vehicle does not need to move to us.

Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and usually it won't run, so the driver stops there and the damage stops with them. Swap it — petrol into a diesel — and the thing starts, idles and pulls away as though nothing had happened, while the high-pressure pump works without the protection your fuel is meant to be giving. That's the trap, and it's why the diesel Ford Focus will have seemed completely ordinary coming back from Whitchurch Combined School. They do. From behind the wheel there's nothing to warn you about, and so nothing tells you. Call us with about how far you travelled, and how hard; the second one matters more than the first.

What our technicians will want to know is whether the trip there was brief and cold, because that is where petrol is least likely to burn correctly — and anything that does not burn can work past the piston rings then into the engine oil. Right up to the moment someone takes it home, a diesel Dacia Duster parked in the parking area by The White Swan with a tank full of petrol in it is an easy job. Nothing worsens whilst it sits, so leave it overnight and ring us next morning.

Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol dilutes diesel, and weaker fuel slips past the tightly fitted parts that are meant to build that pressure, so the further a diesel Peugeot 3008 drove, the less well it held. Normal on the way out and gutless on the way back is how the drive to Evelyn's Patch went, then, and the tank is where to look. Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off and call us.

Three things help when you call from close to Whitchurch Methodist Church: which side the filler is on, whether our van can park next to without blocking the road, and if the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual place our engineers work, and so the spot itself is hardly ever the problem — we'd much rather deal with a tight parking spot than with a car that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We will drain your Mercedes E-Class, change your filter where there is a usable one, flush your lines and put clean fuel through the whole system, as by this point the worst of it is waiting in the lines rather than in your tank.

By now that tank is the least of it. Run a diesel and that blend goes into the filter, into the fuel lines, into the pump, into the rail — and none of that leaves with that tank contents. A diesel BMW 5 Series that got close to St John's Hall needs its system purged. Draining is not the same thing.

Whitchurch: broken down wherever you stopped

A chance to pull over anywhere sensible does not fall to everybody. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Church Headland Lane because you realised after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it's the usual kind.

Whether you remain by the vehicle or step clear of it turns on if being in it is sensible. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the problem: fire it up to reach somewhere better and the mix goes further into the system with every mile driven. However difficult the place, it is no problem for us to come to it, and that's much better for your car than pressing on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

under 15 miles from Whitchurch, the local M40 is what counts here. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will often do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power drains away, your idle goes lumpy, and there may be smoke.

Do not start it to reposition. Get off at the first sensible junction and turn off. Suppose the worst of that on a long run. Anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you phone. What we bring changes.

Whitchurch itself

Whitchurch is a small village in Buckinghamshire, situated in the inland countryside of the South East region. Whitchurch sits at an elevation of 139 metres, approximately 39.9 miles from London and 11.7 miles from Milton Keynes. Whitchurch is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock and is surrounded by nearby places such as Hunters Yard, Creslow, and Oving.

What follows when we arrive with you around Whitchurch

  • We check what was put in, how much, and whether the engine has run. The responses alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting.
  • That tank gets cleared of everything.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.
  • We put clean diesel in and prime your system.
  • The engine is started and tested to make sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

From that point, you are ready to drive away. Our engineers do all of it wherever the car has ended up, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been spotted quickly, it's very rare for there to be long-term damage.

Whitchurch AdBlue removal is a separate job

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first instruction is the same — do not crank it — yet the problem is not. The lubrication a fuel system depends on is stripped away by petrol, which weakens your diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Whitchurch page. Both are ours to handle.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Whitchurch

One price wouldn't be fair here, because this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, measured against how much your tank can hold.
  • Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there safely?

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and if your engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. For your car at home that's going nowhere and isn't time-critical, works too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Whitchurch drivers

I'm on a forecourt in Whitchurch. Can you drain it here?

Much of what our technicians do happens nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you if we can work there. With the owner's permission our technicians attend Applegreen and the other forecourts locally routinely.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether the motor has run matters far more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres. What decides how much work is required is if that mix has been drawn through the system — since though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what moves the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it's salvageable a lot more frequently than people fear, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the car.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't a change and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to remain off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has weakened isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different issue. So no. Afterwards? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

Standing next to it?

Leave the engine shut off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from much more frequently than motorists fear, and a parked, cold motor is the best position to be in.
